#NoFilterSkin Made Possible By GLOMAX Aesthetics

MEDIA INVITE

Hey everyone!

You know, every time I receive compliments on my skin from readers who have been following my lipstick reviews, I can’t help but feel a pang of guilt because in reality, my skin is nowhere near flawless. Beneath the layers of foundation and concealer you see on pictures is a face blemished with zits and scars of adolescence which I’m always too ashamed to reveal.

I used to enjoy enviable radiant skin until cystic acne starting emerging when I was 15, and my complexion went downhill from there. I didn’t know what triggered the acne but I knew, for one, that my body was going through a major metamorphosis. My face turned pimply and along the way I also gained a truckload of weight, making me the subject of taunts from school hooligans whom I stood up to.  My confidence level plunged to a new low although I never really showed it. I guess if not for my strong willpower I would have probably ended up depressed or suicidal.

Hey, look! It’s the stock image girl (source)

I had tried all possible ways (minus seeing the dermatologist, as being a secondary school student I had no money for that) to treat my face but not only did they not work, my skin became drier, thinner and more sensitive. I remember going to school once with a swollen and blistered face caused by my allergic reaction to Benzoyl Peroxide.

Although my skin now seems to have cleared up a little with occasional breakout here or there, the traumatising experiences I went through during my teens had certainly made me apprehensive about anything that has to come in contact with my face. That’s why, for the longest time, I refused to get a facial. I mean, really, who wouldn’t be? Just look at all the horrific post-facial experience shared by so many people online (a notable one here)! You not scared I scared leh!

So when boyfriend surprised me with a facial treat (my first ever) 2 years back, I berated him (poor guy). Still, not wanting to let his money go to waste, I obliged, kept my fingers crossed and went ahead with his plan. The experience, however, reaffirmed my stance of facials. It was mostly agonising (especially extraction, quite the norm actually) and the session left me with a cluster of aggravated red bumps on my face which took forever to subside. And to top it off, I had to endure the hard-sell for 15 minutes (could’ve been longer if I didn’t cut her off) thereafter! Argh.

Staying away from beauty parlours, I continued to do my own facial at home using conventional facial masks, and popped my own pimples in front of the mirror (yesssss, I know it’s a terrible habit). It didn’t improved my skin condition nor did it worsen it. But I had no complaints because I’ve kinda resigned to my fate of never getting back my clear skin. Then, one day, I received an invitation from GLOMAX Aesthetics to try out their facial treatment.

To go or not to go?

By then, my first awful facial experience had more or less become a distant memory. Nonetheless, part of me was still quite wary of what could possibly happen to my face after the session (with the aforementioned beauty blogger’s facial ordeal still etched in my mind). But with boyfriend’s encouragement, I eventually took up the offer, albeit with a lower expectation.

GLOMAX Aesthetics

Although conveniently located next to Clarke Quay MRT station, GLOMAX Aesthetics isn’t accessible by everybody. I had to “make known” my presence using the intercom on the first level before taking the lift up. The parlour itself is nestled among many office-like rooms on the sixth level and it has a small interior with no more than 3 treatment rooms.

GLOMAX boasts a superlative collection of award-winning ultimate face and body treatments. Their treatments are specially crafted for instantaneous results and meticulously executed by a team of highly-trained beauty masters with over 8 years of experience in the beauty industry.

Analysing my skin

Analysing my skin

Upon entering, I was ushered to a table to fill out a health-screening questionnaire-cum-declaration form. My skin was then analysed by Evon (one of the beauticians there) and diagnosed as the typical acne-prone skin (as expected) – dry on the surface but oily underneath. For this reason, I was recommended the 60-minute Intensive Acne Medic Treatment (which bagged the Simply Her Best Anti Acne Facial Award 2014). Click here for a list of facial treatments offered by GLOMAX.

I took a couple of pictures throughout the facial treatment, mostly with my eyes covered (yes, I also couldn’t believe how skilled I was haha), so I shall let them do the talking.

And here comes the most excruciating part of the facial treatment:

Manual extraction

Manual extraction to remove dead skin cells

Besides preventing me from witnessing the dreadful procedure, I believe the cotton square puffs were there to soak up my tears because my eyes were literally tearing from pain. I had always thought the purpose of extraction was to pop my visible pimples so I was a little baffled when that step took so darn long (when in actual fact, was less than 5 minutes la because the esthetician moved from one area to another very quickly)! I didn’t remember seeing a lot of pimples on the mirror before I left my house!

SO PAINFUL!!!

Even when I pop my zits on a regular basis! (bad habit, please don’t learn)

Although I could have alert my esthetician about my discomfort (and she would adjust her techniques to my level of comfort), I chose to endure the agony because I somehow knew it would be beneficial to my skin that way. I later found out that extraction helps to draw out all the accumulated dead skin cells in the pores! You can watch some examples here and here. It’s actually quite gratifying seeing those nasty stuff underneath your skin gets taken out. After this step, my skin felt a lot cleaner and “emptied”.

My eyes were shielded from the sudden beam of light with a goggle-like protective gear (pictured below). Every application would leave a warming sensation that went away within seconds. If I’m not mistaken, this also helps to remove some facial hair which could have trapped sebum, bacteria and dead cells in its follicle, thus causing a pimple to form.

The aftermath

Probably due to my unhealthy diet (ate Samyang spicy Korean noodles that night oh goodness gracious me), pimples still formed from time to time but they were mostly small, pus-filled ones that healed speedily. My old zits had also disappeared and for the first time in years, my face was near-spotless (like 85% thereabout) during my menstrual cycle in August!

NEW: McDonald’s Ebi-Kase Burger, Sweet Potato Fries & Honeydew McFlurry

MEDIA INVITE

Hey everyone!

Remember when McDonald’s Ebi Burger first launched in Singapore in 2013, it was so well-received that stocks were all snapped up within days of going on sale? Well, if you missed it, you would be glad to know that it’s making a comeback but in a different identity with an improved recipe!

Called the Ebi-Kase burger (エビカセ or a chock-full of shrimps, I’d believe), it is described as a flavourful combination of succulent whole shrimp in a crunchy, cereal-coated patty (instead of the breadcrumb shrimp patty found in the regular Ebi Burger), topped with shrimp paste flavoured sauce (rather than thousand island sauce) and crispy whole-leaf lettuce, served in between soft white sesame and chive buns.

LOOK AT THE PRAWNS

The cereal-laden shrimp patty was slightly crispy on the outside and incredibly luscious and juicy on the inside. If not for the buns, I would have probably heard a resounding crunch each time I sank my teeth into the patty. I enjoyed the chunks of plump shrimps that were infused into the patty as they added texture and richness to the burger. Apart from the listed ingredients, there were also traces of potato in the patty which acted as a paste to keep everything intact.

The sauce – a blend of onion, garlic, prawn paste and chilli padi – was savoury and a little overwhelming on the palate. The added spice is what I feel sets this burger apart from the original Ebi Burger but it may not be a welcoming change for those who can’t take the heat (although it’s not as spicy as McSpicy).

The Ebi-Kase Burger also come with double patty from S$9.10 with a complete meal or S$7.15 for à la carte order.

For a truly delightful Ebi-Kase experience, you can opt for the Cereal Ebi Special from just S$7.45. The meal includes a Single Cereal Ebi (à la carte from S$5.35), a refreshing glass of Coca-Cola (S) and crispy Sweet Potato Fries (M).

You may also choose balanced sides as options by swapping your fries and opting for a corn cup at no extra charge. If you’re craving for something healthier, you can top-up $1.20 to change your side to a Garden Side Salad (whole leaf lettuce, red and white cabbage, crunchy carrots, corn kernels and tomatoes, served with a delicious Japanese dressing).

Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet Potato Fries

Created to compliment the Ebi-Kase Burger, the shoestring Sweet Potato Fries were deep fried to a crispy, nice shade of golden-orange and sprinkled with very minimal salt in order to retain its original flavour. They were tasty while they were still hot. Once they cooled, they became soggy and had this doughy consistency which I hated. If you need to put out the fire in your mouth after eating the Ebi-Kase Burger, perhaps eating some of these fries can help extinguish the burn a little.

Or, you could take advantage of the 1-for-1 offer on beverages that is still ongoing. (UPDATE: Promotion ended!) Since no one was keen to share the drinks with me (*sobs*), I had both the Mango and Ribena Chill to myself!

Mango Peach Chill

Mango Peach Chill

Ribena Chill

Ribena Chill

The Chill beverages are basically slushies made with popular juice drinks that are not manufactured by McDonald’s. Two flavours are available for the Chill thirst-quenchers: Mango PeachSjora ice-blended, and Ribena. Both were not overpoweringly sweet because the ice melted quite rapidly (which is great too because that means I don’t have to wait very long for me to be able to slurp it through the straw).

Honeydew McFlurry (from S$2.90)

Honeydew McFlurry (from S$2.90) – The cup size seems to have shrunk a little

Honeydew McFlurry

Honeydew McFlurry

For dessert, the new Honeydew McFlurry is a refreshing way to bridge from savoury to sweet. Apart from the Honeydew flavour, the soft-serve is also laced with cereal (another star ingredient in this new launch as you can probably tell), making it a rather unusual mashup and something you wouldn’t expect from McDonald’s. However, I felt that the sweetness of the Honeydew was too cloying and artificial that it reminded me of those Honeydew candies served to guests during Chinese New Year. I would very much prefer Matcha McFlurry to this.

As far as I know, this new burger is exclusive to McDonald’s in Singapore only! Are you excited for it? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

Psst, look out for the second chapter of Ebi-Kase which I will be unveiling right here in mid September!

Thanks for the invite, omyblogclub and McDonald's Singapore!

The Cereal Ebi, Sweet Potato Fries and Honeydew McFlurry will be available islandwide from 3 September while stocks last.

REVIEW: Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Eye Treatment

SAMPLE

Hey everyone!

Aging is unarguably one of women’s greatest fears. As the age of thirty draws near, I can literally feel my face becoming droopy and less resilient at the jowls. However, my main concern have always been my eyes because the delicate skin around them makes the area terribly prone to fine lines and wrinkles. Just so you know, the eyelids are one the few body parts which will reveal one’s age first. Therefore, some precautions have to be taken to prevent premature sagging around the eyes, especially since I work with eye makeup on a regular basis. And removal of eye makeup is notorious for causing premature wrinkling.

But much as I try to avoid doing things that would potentially cause the skin to stretch over time during makeup application, sometimes it’s just inevitable that the lids are tugged with say, drier eye pencils, or even from frequent eyeliner use. Thus, apart from having products dedicated to skin care, I think it is also essential to have some specially for the eyes as well to sort of reverse the damage you have done to the sensitive skin around them. And that’s where I feel Clinique’s latest eye treatment cream comes into play!

Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Eye Treatment (S$79)

Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Eye Treatment (S$79)

If a woman can do at least four things at once, her skin care should too. NEW Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Eye Treatment does exactly that for women. An advanced eye treatment that visibly brightens, lifts, smoothes crepiness, and diminishes fine lines to crow’s feet. Plus, a boost of hydration that helps repair dehydrated skin, which is susceptible to cellular damage. Utilizing “smart” technology, NEW Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Eye Treatment is fortified with a cocktail of potent ingredients that help to keep skin calm, comfortable, and receptive to ingredient benefits.

I am usually a lot more cautious and selective when shopping for facial products due to my mildly sensitive skin which would occasionally break out in a rash (although it’s a lot better now). But with Clinique, I am confident that I won’t suffer from adverse reactions to their products because they are all allergy tested and 100% fragrance-free (and also the world’s first to do so). That means every product (formulated without known allergens) is tested – 12 times on 600 people – and if even one of those 7200 applicants incites an allergic reaction, the laboratory  starts all over.

The eye treatment is packed with numerous beneficial ingredients to help rejuvenate your eyes. Some of the ingredients are as follows:

Cladosiphon Okamuranus Extract – soothes the skin

Algae Extract – helps keep skin soothed and calm and make it more receptive to repair

Hydrolyzed Rice Protein and Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract – support skin’s natural repair process

Sodium RNA – helps eradicate the appearance of damage caused by stress, UV and other harmful assaults

Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 and Palmitoyl Hexapeptide-12 – helps to diminish lines and wrinkles by plumping the skin

Whey Protein – helps minimize the appearance of lines and wrinkles while helping skin to look and feel firmer and more resilient

Plum Extract – brightens full and fatigued-looking skin

Morus Nigra Root Extract, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract and Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Fruit Extract – help restore radiance and luminosity for a more even-toned appearance

Ascorbyl Glucoside – helps counter dullness in the under-eye area

Glucosamine Ferment – helps promote cell renewal at the uppermost layers of the skin to gently diminish the appearance of surface dullness

Hyaluronic Acid – attracts and binds moisture to thirsty skin

Cucumber Extract, Sunflower Extract and Barley Extract – help keep skin perfectly hydrated

Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Eye Treatment

I don’t have a huge issue with wrinkles (so no comments on that aspect) but I did notice my eye bags getting worse progressively (though very gradually and not considered serious yet – phew – I thank my lucky stars) due to late nights (can’t help it because I’m busy all the damn time) so this launch was pretty timely. I put it to the test to see if it helps combat my problem and it has been close to 2 weeks since I started using the product.

Now, I don’t have any pictorial evidence to show because the change is honestly not very visible so it couldn’t be captured on camera. But I did indeed feel a slight improvement to the appearance of my eye bags. They seem less puffy and my eyes generally feel more awake now (making my eyes appear bigger than before HAHA!)

Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Eye Treatment

Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Eye Treatment

Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Eye Treatment

A teeny weeny bit pumped out for each eye will do (also because it’s quite expensive, so use sparingly and make it last). As it has a thinner consistency, I usually apply it before my face cream so that it can penetrate the skin better. I apply it day and night around the eye area, including the lids. In the day, I would let it settle fully for at least 10 minutes (it definitely takes a shorter time than that. I just like to be extra cautious) before I proceed with my makeup routine.

As it is lightweight and oil-free, it doesn’t leave a greasy and sticky residue after application. In fact it has such great absorption properties that it doesn’t feel like it’s there anymore after a few seconds! It is colourless too once you spread it out. Therefore it’s suitable for all skin types and ethnicities.

However, you’d feel a very slight tingling sensation with every application. It’s absolutely bearable, though (not because I have high pain threshold. It really is!), and it dissipates before you even know it.

Tadah, gone!

Tadah, gone!

Sure, there doesn’t seem to be a need for me to use this product but, as the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. I believe that the skin will prevail against aging if we take care of it early in life 🙂

So what are your thoughts on this new product? Do share with me in the comments below!
