REVIEW: APRILSKIN Perfect Magic Dual Eyeshadow in Pure & Chic

Hello everyone!

With only one week to go before we exit the Circuit Breaker, professionals including myself, who have to commute to our workplaces come 2 June, would have started mentally preparing for the unprecedented changes in our weekday morning routines. For beautyholics like me, the mandatory wearing of face mask will mean ditching the lipstick and placing more emphasis on the eyes – but there’s a problem. Nearly two months of going bare faced has likely rendered my eyeshadow application skills slightly rusty, and as vain as it sounds, I certainly do not want to risk being late to work just to redo my makeup!

Scouring the virtual beauty aisle on Shopee (really the ultimate lockdown boredom saviour 馃檶馃徎 *cues heavenly choir sound effect*) during one of its flash sales had thankfully pointed me to a possible solution – the Perfect Magic Dual Eyeshadow by APRILSKIN. This compact eyeshadow palette is marketed as a timesaver as it enables the user to blend three (shimmery) shades at once.

Such concept of having multiple colours in one pan isn’t new since Benefit Cosmetics,聽Laneige (albeit theirs is in the form of bullets) and many other Korean beauty brands were already ahead of the game. But as far as I can remember, no other reputable beauty brand has come close to offering two 3-in-1 colour combinations for under S$30 ($27 on Guardian and $24.30 on Shopee, or S$18.70 in my case). In fact, at 6 grams of product per palette (case in point: They’re Real! Duo Eyeshadow Blender contains 3.5 grams of product while Two Tone Shadow Bar only has 2 grams, and both cost a lot more!), this already is a clear winner in the price department.

Stowed in a tight-fitting box, the rectangular packaging resembles an enlarged version of a mint candy tin box. It is about the size of my palm, small and slim enough to slide into my purse and carry on the go. The inside cover of the lid is reflective (even with its protective film stuck on) so it acts as a mirror.

The eyeshadow pans, each measuring roughly 4 cm by 2 cm, are aligned vertically and enclosed in a plastic film to prevent them from staining the box. Right next to them lies the sponge-tip applicator which is highly encouraged to be used (much to my reluctance) for the product to bring about the desired results. The tip of the applicator is dome-shaped which doesn’t extend over the full width of the pan so unless you place it strategically, you won’t be able to pick up all three shades simultaneously.

The topmost colour combination is named “Pure” and it consists of everyday neutral shades including a champagne (for highlights), a beige with red undertones and a medium brown. The payoff was mostly sheer when swatched with the applicator. The lightest shade almost couldn’t be seen, and I had to press down and drag the applicator across my skin for some degree of pigmentation to be visible. However, applying with my finger gave more payoff (which is somewhat expected of shimmery shades) and the gradient also appeared more vivid and seamless.

Actual distribution of "Pure" in the pan (genuinely curious: what is the rationale for giving the lightest shade the biggest area?)

The colour combination “Chic” below would be more suited for a glammed-up look (but still appropriate for everyday wear) as it has a peachy beige (for highlights), a reddish plum and a deeper brown. As a whole, this is slightly more pigmented than Pure (still sheer in my book) and is also best applied with finger. However, the darkest shade did not seem to deliver much payoff – I had to run the applicator over my lids a few times before a faint brown emerged.

I wore both shades concurrently for 8 hours (I took the chance to wear them out to run some errands and was pretty sure I attracted bemused stares), and I must say both contributed a fair bit of fallout – some of which were shimmers – on my face. Surprisingly, despite having oily lids, the eyeshadows did not smear or wedge into my creases over time (Laneige’s Two Tone Shadow Bar is the biggest culprit when it comes to this – what terrible product 馃槫) and actually stayed on throughout the duration of my wear test!

The downside of this product is its generally sheer wash of colour (typical of Asian makeup products and it is nice if you want a more natural-looking finish to brighten up your peepers) but to be fair, it still gave way better payoff than many Korean eyeshadows I have tried. Getting the placement of the eyeshadow on the lids right with the applicator would require some trial and error, so you’re better off using your fingers or a wide dense eyeshadow brush if time is of the essence. Furthermore, it would also be a pain to wash the applicator without further spreading the shimmers all over the surface of the tip.

However, I must say that the impressive longevity came as a pleasant surprise! This makeup concept, although questionable at first, has also won me over as I like how it would be able to streamline my makeup routine and allow me to get to the door quicker once in-office work is resumed 馃槉

What are your thoughts on this makeup concept? Let me know what you think in the comments below or take a quick poll!

REVIEW: APRILSKIN Real Calendula Peel Off Pack & Real Carrot Serum

Hello everyone!

With most shutters down and the government urging us to stay home, my shopping orientation has changed drastically over the past few weeks. Online shopping apps are creeping up on my most frequently used list on my mobile phone, so instead of saving money, my bank account is actually taking a greater hit than usual from the Circuit Breaker 馃ゴ Shopee has got to be the biggest culprit of all because of their flash sales that happen every four hours and to be perfectly honest, most products sold there really are priced at a steal.

Take, for example, the APRILSKIN skincare products of which advertisements have been bombarding my social media feed lately (even though said products were launched in 2018?). What could have essentially cost me almost $50 if I had gone the traditional route (i.e. buying from Guardian) was only slightly more than half that amount during the flash sale I so happened to be camping for.

My APRILSKIN haul!

My APRILSKIN haul!

Established in 2014, APRILSKIN is a South Korean beauty brand that prides themselves on using naturally-derived ingredients in their products to prevent skin irritation. Apart from skincare products, APRILSKIN also boasts a complete range of makeup tools and cosmetics from which many devotees might have first learnt about the brand (not gonna lie – their cushion foundation looked incredible).

Based on the availability, or lack thereof, of their products on their international website, it’s safe to say that APRILSKIN is sought-after not only in Singapore and their home country, but also in other parts of the world as well. Hence, I’m very excited to see what the hype is all about! Are their products really that effective, or is APRILSKIN just a master of social media marketing? Let’s find out 馃槈

In case it wasn’t explicit earlier, all products reviewed on this post were paid for with my own money and Shopee had not approached me to do a collaboration.

This product in particular piqued my interest because of how gentle it seemed in exfoliating the outermost layer of the skin, unlike those that cling to the skin and make ripping them off a nightmare. There’s also something oddly satisfying about peeling stuff off the skin while being able to see dead skin cells getting removed in the process (nothing quite unusual for someone who enjoys morbid videos of pimple popping, earwax extraction and ingrown hair removal 馃槣) so I wanted to experience it for myself!

Calen.. what? If you have been out of the skincare loop like me, calendula, or pot marigold, is traditionally used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. It has antiseptic properties which helps in treating wounds and preventing acne, and promotes skin tightening among many other benefits. ‘Pretty much explains how calendula lent itself to be the star ingredient in this peel-off mask!

What the gel looks like

What the gel looks like

The product had a scent to it that smelled somewhat like yuzu to me (it might well be the smell of calendula but I’m not familiar with this plant) although some users have also commented that it reeked of artificial fragrance. It contains visible particles which, according to APRILSKIN, are parts of the calendulas (petals, pistil, stamen, calyx, etc.) and are distributed evenly throughout the clear, gel-like sticky substance.

My Sand & Sky brush finally came in handy!

My Sand & Sky brush finally came in handy!

Application is ideally done with the brand’s Real Jelly Brush for a more even coating but since it was not included in the bundle, I used the brush that came with my Sand & Sky mask just because I am a cheapskate (it worked perfectly well, though!). Having tried several different ways of application, I found dispensing the product onto the bristles before spreading it all over the face, section by section in an upward motion, worked better. The brand also recommends applying a thin layer (twice a week), but I piled it up a little more to prevent it from ripping apart during removal. At the rate I’m going, one tube would probably last me for about two months.

The product tightened over time and finally, with my desk fan pointing towards me on full blast, dried down completely after 20 minutes instead of 30 minutes as stated on the box. The peeling process went pretty smoothly and painlessly (although it wasn’t as clean as this) but not without having to lightly scratch or pinch along my jawline to locate the edge of the mask (‘reckon I lost a few strands of facial hair doing so).

All in all, I didn’t think it was entirely effective in removing my blackheads (on my nose especially), but it certainly lifted tons of dead skin (mostly from my healing zits) from atop my cheeks. Although the drier parts of my face looked negligibly flaky thereafter (it definitely did not give me the glass skin depicted on their marketing collaterals after use), it appeared brighter overall and the redness of my acne blemishes had also been visibly reduced. Most importantly, it did not irritate my sensitive skin!

By the way, this is how you can verify the authenticity of your APRILSKIN products! How cool is this?!

This was included in the set, so it wasn’t like I had a choice. That said, it came timely because I was already on the lookout for a replacement for my nighttime serum when my current one runs out. However, much as I was happy to welcome this to my rotation, I was also curious – why is carrot chosen over the likes cucumber, aloe vera and tomato which are so commonly found in skincare products? Google revealed a plethora of benefits of carrots but the one that struck with me was its ability to overcome acne. Wow, today I learnt! Where have carrot-based skincare products been all my life, especially when I was battling a serious case of acne?

According to APRILSKIN, this daytime and nighttime serum has been clinically tested to be non-comedogenic. It harnesses ingredients derived from certified organic carrots (carrot water, carrot seed oil and carrot proteins) to combat blemishes such as acne and whiteheads (those pesky little bumps beneath the surface of the skin which I have plenty of!) and also niacinamide (a water-soluble vitamin) to brighten the skin tone and lighten hyperpigmentation. Of course, the ingredient list doesn’t stop here but I shan’t bore you with the details.

The smell of this white, lightweight, mildly viscous cream reminded me of lemon grass – it kind of evoked a sense of tranquillity in me. But not to worry if you aren’t a fan of aromatherapy because the scent is fleeting and you won’t be able to smell a thing once it’s on your face. In terms of its efficacy, perhaps because I used it after applying the peel-off mask, I noticed that the skin absorbed it a lot better than other serums. It also didn’t leave a sticky texture behind after application, which is a rarity for Korean skincare products (for me)! There wasn’t much difference to the appearance of my skin until the next morning because I woke up to shrunken bumps and glowing skin! The results were quite unexpected, I must say 馃檴

In general, even though the mask didn’t perform as well as I hoped at the first try (I expected more gunk), I enjoyed the experience of peeling it off and will most likely repurchase due to this reason (it’s a good compelling reason for me to use it as I have the tendency of not using up my face mask before they pass their shelf lives 馃檴 #lazy). The effects of the carrot serum were what really took me by surprise so I guess this pretty much settles it for me. Hello, new serum in my skincare regime!

REVIEW: Daeng Gi Meo Ri Vitalizing Series (Shampoo + Scalp Nutrition Pack + Treatment + Nutrition Hair Pack)

Hello everyone!

How are you holding up with the circuit breaker (or lockdown, depending on where you are)? As a homebody, being cooped up at home never seemed like much of a big deal to me until I personally felt how warm and stuffy my living room (where I usually work from) would get in the afternoon for the first time since moving here – even with two pretty solid desk fans blowing in my face.

And one thing leads to another. Apart from the occasional musty odour of my sweat and small pustules popping out more frequently on my face, I also noticed an increase in my hair fall which, quite frankly, isn’t an entirely new to me. Normally when that happens, I would immediately book an appointment with my hairstylist to get my locks snipped. But with non-essential businesses being told to close during this period, this option is temporarily unavailable 馃う馃徎鈥嶁檧锔廡he absence of professional help meant that I could only rely on over-the-counter hair products to slow down my balding process until the economy reopens. For that, I’m thankful that Daeng Gi Meo Ri (雽曣赴毹鸽Μ) had come to the rescue because picking the right products for my sensitive scalp would be a whole new issue in itself!

Daeng Gi Meo Ri

Daeng Gi Meo Ri

New to the brand? You’re not alone! Through some digging, I managed to find out a bit more about Daeng Gi Meo Ri. Based on unofficial reports, it has actually been around in the Singapore hair care market since 2014 and had even bagged some awards. I must been living under a rock!

Established in 1998, Daeng Gi Meo Ri is the first hair care brand in South Korea to incorporate traditional oriental herbal ingredients in their formula designed to maximise hair health through beneficial medicinal herbs extracted with traditional Korean fermentation process. It comes with specific ranges (Vitalizing, Energizing and Yellow Blossom) to cater to different scalp needs and conditions. In my case, I was recommended the Vitalizing range by its rep for its hair-loss prevention and hair growth capabilities.

Vitalizing Shampoo

Their number-one selling shampoo (the last time I checked, it’s sold out on Watsons!) helps in cleansing the scalp and preventing hair tangles with moisture supply, which may in turn improve your hair condition in 3 to 6 months. I mean, just by the smell of it, you’d know it’s not some gimmicky shampoo that banks on the power of scent (looking at you, P&G brands). It has a very noticeable herbal smell (somewhat like a more pleasant version of luo han guo combined with chrysanthemum) which fortunately doesn’t mess with my nose.

Expected more lather than this, to be honest! But it was more foamy at subsequent washes somehow!

The appearance of the product聽funnily reminds me of malt extract as it has an incredibly thick consistency. Just one wash and I was already able to feel the cleanliness of my scalp which normally felt oily (and sticky?). There was also a vast difference in the texture of my hair. Can’t say I wasn’t impressed and surprised by the results at all! 馃槺

Vitalizing Treatment

Every shampoo has to have a conditioner accompaniment, so this is no exception. But rather than a conditioner, this is paired with a treatment (very common to see treatments in place of conditioners nowadays) which I presume is due to the incorporation of more potent ingredients that lead to more targeted results, rather than just giving hair the ultra-smooth effect. This scalp essence (as Daeng Gi Meo Ri calls it) claims to help in the prevention of hair loss by delivering medicinal herbal nutrition deep into the scalp to strengthen hair follicles.

Although it still has a herbal note to it, the treatment smells more inviting as compared to the shampoo, and it looks like a thick malted milk formulation (y’know, like Horlicks). This leaves my hair SO soft and silky smooth every time! 馃槏

Vitalizing Hair Cap

Missed going to professional hair salons to pamper your hair already? You cannot replicate that same experience at home but you can certainly achieve similar results with the help of this hair treatment cap. This easy-to-use self care for your hair contains additional fermented oriental herbal ingredients to supply nutrients to hair weakened from various elements (for instance, from chemical treatment including perms, dyes and stress from daily heat styling). Simply put, this is a more extravagant, one-time use version of the treatment for days you want to indulge in some serious TLC for your hair.

My experience in trying hair caps from other brands was nothing short of a nightmare. I remembered struggling to keep my waist-length hair each time inside the hair cap which wasn’t very well secured by the weakly adhesive tape. However, this was not the case for Daeng Gi Meo Ri’s which had even included another layer of wood pulp-like material inside the cap to hold my hair captive. The adhesive tape isn’t sticky to the touch but it somehow clings onto the cap like absolute magic (even after stripping it off to readjust the cap)!

It's a perfect wrap!

Once all my hair had been tucked into the cap, I massaged my head to ensure even distribution of the serum around my hair. Then, came a pleasant surprise – a cooling sensation started creeping in to reinvigorate my scalp! After about 15 minutes, I removed the cap and rinsed the serum off my hair. As I ran through my hair with my fingers, I could already feel its softness and smoothness (the same happened to my toilet floor – I almost slipped!). All in all, the product was a lot better than I had expected!

Imagine trying to resist the temptation to scratch your scalp because you don’t want to give the impression that you have head lice. Yup, that’s me on most sweltering days, and products I had tried in hopes of alleviating the itch had been largely unsuccessful. These past failed attempts naturally led me to cast a doubtful light on this clear, runny tonic (doesn’t help that it also kinda smells like mouthwash 馃ぃ). But alas, I was wrong! (And I’ve never felt so happy to be proven wrong!)

It has been three days since using the tonic and the number of times my fingers reached for my scalp has visibly reduced. The cool weather might have a small part to play in this but my scalp has never felt this.. normal for a long time! Did I mention that this also gives a tingly sensation?

The initial results of using these Daeng Gi Meo Ri products were beyond satisfactory as I do see an improvement in my hair quality (e.g. less frizz, slightly more volume and a lot easier to manage) especially when I wake up. However, it’s still too early to say if they are effective in promoting hair growth. The prices are also on the high side for some drugstore hair care products and this makes me very hesistant to dispense a full pump of shampoo and treatment at every wash (which may do more harm than good as more strain might be put on my scalp due to the lack of lather). But I guess you could always wait to snag them at a lower price during one of the many Watsons sales.

REVIEW: IR脡N Start Afresh Daily Enzyme Powder Wash

Hello everyone!

You might have heard of the infamous multi-step skincare regimen popularised by South Korea but let’s be honest – who has the time for that? More often than not, I would find myself even dragging my feet to the washroom after a long day at work to shower because I am just that dead beat, let alone going through a thousand and one steps to prep my face for bedtime. Thankfully, a local beauty brand, IR脡N, heard my silent cries for help and decided once and for all to put a stop to these unnecessarily superfluous routines and created products which bring back the joy of skincare.

IR脡N… er, who?

Founded by local entrepreneur, Eric Tan (also the founder of Singapore鈥檚 first traditional Japanese onsen spa), IR脡N was conceived out of his love for his wife (hence the name IR脡N because that’s Irene – his wife’s name – in Hungarian – awww 馃槏) who had been struggling with breakouts and eczema. When the many non-comedogenic products she had tried proved to be futile in calming down her skin, the loving husband decided to delve into the arcane world of skincare in search of a solution which led to his partnership with a skincare researcher from A*STAR. Together with the researcher, he formulated a serum without harmful chemical, synthetic fragrances, and BPA for his wife. From there, they developed seven concoctions and started IR脡N with the aim of providing busy women like his wife a straightforward solution to common skin ailments, backed by scientific facts and research.

Launched in December 2017, the serums come in 7 formulations for wrinkles and deep lines, acne and oily skin, dehydrated skin, sensitivity, pigmentation and uneven skin tones, sagging skin, and clogged pores. Shown here are just 3 types of serum to be used with the Skin Vaporizer, a device that nano-sizes the serum to swiftly and efficiently feed the nutrient-deprived skin. If time permits, I will do a more in-dept review on this.

If time permits, I will do a more in-dept review on this.

More than a year after their signature serums made public appearance, IR脡N comes up with yet another innovative product – a cleanser in the form of powder.

Introducing: Start Afresh Daily Enzyme Powder Wash

IR脡N Start Afresh Daily Enzyme Powder Wash (S$35 each)

IR脡N Start Afresh Daily Enzyme Powder Wash (S$35 each)

Made in Japan, the Start Afresh Daily Enzyme Powder Wash is a gentle daily powder wash with triple cleansing action to remove dirt, sebum and old keratin, and is suitable for all skin types. Vegan and cruelty-free, it contains Japanese Rice Bran, a natural ingredient with soothing enzymes and antioxidant properties which effectively resurface and gently exfoliate the skin to reveal a healthy glow and smoother complexion. On top of that, it also has Sorbitol and Hyaluronic Acid to help retain moisture whilst skin is thoroughly cleansed. This is in contrast to other brands of powder wash which tend to contain talc (which causes irritation and dryness to sensitive and inflamed skin), SLS/SLES (which gives cleansers the foamy, bubbly consistency but at the same time, removes the skin of its natural oils and trigger skin irritation), non-fatty alcohol (or drying alcohols which may harm the skin’s protective surface and worsen oily skin), and fragrance.

Truth be told, I had never heard of powder cleansers until the launch last month so naturally, I was very intrigued and bewildered by it, to say the least. Isn’t powder a lot harder to work with? Won’t powder scatter and cause a mess (and this is the main reason I avoid loose powder foundation like the plague)? Like, who actually asked for cleansers, in powder form? Is this another marketing gimmick? I was sceptical. That was, until I tried and tested the powder wash myself.

As it turned out, it was actually pretty easy to use!

WATCH: Live demonstration by a staff from IREN. Notice just how much powder is needed for the wash?

The bottle is also designed to dispense just the amount required (about 1 teaspoon) for each wash, hence minimising wastage (no more oh sh*t! moments). Once the powder is poured onto the palm (and the fine-grained texture feels sooooo soft like icing sugar 馃槏), slowly mix it with some water and lather into a creamy foam. Then, gently massage it onto the face for 15 seconds before rinsing it with warm water.

WATCH: If you’re terrible at remembering how much 1 teaspoon of powder is, fret not! Just dispense the powder from the bottle only once.

But how effective is this powder wash in removing makeup?

WATCH: Swiped Colourpop Lippie Stix (in Fab Five) once on my hand. Let’s see how much it is removed at the end of the wash!

The (disappointing, I must say) result after a pretty rigorous wash

The (disappointing, I must say) result after a pretty rigorous wash

My verdict?

From this little experiment, it is safe to say that the Super Gentle Daily Powder Wash is only great as an everyday cleanser that is best used on bare face so do remember to take your makeup off completely before arriving at this step!

That said, apart from the skin benefits of this powder wash, it has other major advantages too which jet setters can relate to – you won’t have to check in your cleanser (yay to washing up on long-haul flights!) and you won’t feel like you’re piggybacking Snorlax with something so lightweight in your hand-carry baggage. Be careful not to repackage it in a way that would raise suspicions, though. You definitely don’t want to be wrongfully detained like this lady here.

REVIEW: K-Palette Futae Labo Real Double Eyelid

Hello everyone!

Regardless of where we are in the world, there are bound to be specific sets of beauty norms that we are supposed to subscribe to. In Asia in particular, large almond-shaped eyes are prized for their exotic appearance while double eyelids are favoured over monolids as the latter causes eyes to look small, disinterested (or sleepy, for the lack of better words) and lacklustre.

Having been on the receiving end of criticisms about my less-than-ideal facial features for most of my life, the pressure to get a permanent fix has always been there. But the thought of going under the knife for non-medical reasons (especially for superficial ones like this) does not sit well with conservatives like me. Thus, I had already resigned to the fact that I would never be able to achieve well-defined eyelid creases, and that no matter how much effort is put into creating an elaborated eye makeup, it would ultimately be tucked away beneath my hooded eyelids 馃槕

Eyelids: Now you see me, now you don't

Eyelids: Now you see me, now you don’t

That is, until Futae Labo Real Double Eyelid by K-Palette – a weightless formula which promises to create natural-looking eyelid creases – burst into my life. Unlike the many double eyelid products that you might have seen in the market (most of which are adhesive tapes which, in my opinion, do a terrible job of being discreet), this product comes in the form of liquid.

Hmmm… that’s just eyelid glue, isn’t it?

*finger wags*聽

This is heaps better than your usual eyelid glue. This is a game-changer.

K-Palette Futae Labo Real Double Eyelid (~S$18)

Over the years, double eyelid glue has gotten a bad rep for being a pain to use (higher chance of messing up the application and having to reapply), turning white upon contact with water or flaking off a few hours into wear so I would be lying if I said I wasn’t sceptical about this new product at all. Fortunately, none of these happened during my tryout and it was surprisingly easy to apply even for unseasoned users like yours truly!

For the uninitiated, K-Palette is a Japanese beauty brand best known for its highly-rated聽1 Day Tattoo聽eyebrow liners and eyeliners so I think it is safe to say that you can also expect comparable performance from their latest addition.

K-Palette Futae Labo Real Double Eyelid

Without any indication of what the product is sans its pretty hexagonal-looking see-through packaging, the unassuming design of the tube could easily be mistaken for a varnish of sorts, so it’s advisable that you label it if you don’t intend to keep the packaging. Like most nail polishes, this comes with white nylon brush attached to the cap as well for application on-the-go, and it’s perfectly sized to fit the smallest of purses. Also included is a Y-shaped fork which helps to reinforce the double eyelids.

K-Palette Futae Labo Real Double Eyelid

K-Palette Futae Labo Real Double Eyelid

As with many other foreign products from non-English speaking countries, essential information, such as the ingredient list and instructions (there are pictorial guides, but those aren’t sufficient for me), is written entirely in Japanese on the packaging so the onus is on the user to find out how the glue should be applied online (or using Google Translate? Ain’t nobody got time for that 馃樁).

But lucky for you, I’ve done all the necessary homework so you needn’t have to! And I strongly believe this step-by-step guide doesn’t just apply to this product, but other eyelid glues too 馃槈

For starters, you’d need to decide on the location of the new creases. If you have hooded lids like mine, I would advise against forging the crease too far away from the upper lash line because it will look very unnatural (and your eyes may end up looking smaller and more tired than before because the hooded lids would be pushed down, if you get what I mean). I opted to have mine somewhere in the middle of the crescent, which is slightly above my natural crease line. Then, gently mark the lines with other sharp end of the Y-fork so the lids would crease more naturally after the glue has been applied.

Application

Application

The recommended number of coats by K-Palette is one for each lid, but being the kiasu person I am, I reckon my brush went over about thrice which took about three minutes in all to dry down completely. So yup, in the interest of time, stick to one or two coats at the maximum. Do ensure that the eye is fully closed during the application process because any slight bunching of the lid could ruin the whole thing.

The "Y" side of the fork is too daunting for me. I prefer using the other side 馃ぃ

Each swipe renders a white semi-viscous layer of glue which dries to a clear semi-matte finish. There would still be a sheen to it but it is only noticeable at a close distance (or not if you have sparkly eye makeup on). Once the tackiness is gone (very crucial as the creases may stick to each other if the glue is still tacky and you will have to start all over again), hike up the lids again with the Y-fork as you open your eyes and ta-dah! Double eyelids! 馃榿

DOUBLE. EYE. LIDS.

DOUBLE. EYE. LIDS.

Not perfect yet as this was just one of the first few trials

Not perfect yet as this was just one of the first few trials

As a novice in using eyelid glue, I had one burning question which, for the record, no other websites had touched on (like, seriously? So everyone uses the glue on bare lids, aye? 馃檮) – how should it be applied with eye makeup?聽 After a few rounds of trial and error, I can conclude that it should only be applied on top of your eye makeup, or as the final step. The drawback of this is that your bristles would be stained by the makeup though, so be sure to give them a little rinse under the tap before the next application.

With eye shadow on and I SWEAR I DID NOT MTXX (OR PHOTOSHOP) MY EYES. The world of difference eyelids make to the eyes! Now you know my eyes aren't actually small - they've just been overshadowed by my hooded lids >:(

What about eyeliner? Well, this depends on how budge-proof your eyeliner is (Kat Von D Tattoo Liner FTW!). I personally line my eyes after applying the glue because I’d be simply too lazy to redraw them 馃槀

Sorry for the potato quality.. Taken with my S9 at night, about 12 hours into wear!

Sorry for the potato quality.. Taken with my S9 at night, about 12 hours into wear!

Having worn the glue out on several occasions already, I must say I’m extremely impressed by how long my double eyelids held up. In fact, it lasted the whole day without any of the flaking nonsense. And because the formula is also waterproof, you can cry your heart out at the movies without having to worry if the glue would turn white and fall off midway 馃樁

B-but how do I remove it at the end of the day?聽 Oh no, you don’t. It’s permanent! Isn’t that what we all want? MUAHAHAHA.

I kid (sigh!). Your makeup remover should do the trick 馃槈

Is this something you monolid/hooded lid people would consider getting to enhance your appearance? Let me know in the comments below or take a quick poll!

Centrum庐 Women: The All-In-One Multivitamin Specially Designed for Us!

Hello everyone!

Many people would agree that turning 21 is the biggest milestone in life. After all, it’s the age of majority in Singapore, our gateway to adulthood as we finally meet all age requirements at the cinemas, polling station and not forgetting – if you’re a Singaporean – for receiving the annual GST voucher聽(this was the greatest deal to me, man! But being born in November meant that I’d only usually be eligible for anything in the following year 馃槖).

*cough* You know, I know

*cough* You know, I know (source)

Sadly, life also starts going downhill from then on. From the increasing prominence of聽 dark circles and saggy jowls to declining energy levels and metabolic rate, my body has been inevitably experiencing a multitude of degenerative changes as I inch towards my 30s. Even without looking at the mirror, I can already feel age creeping up on me as I squint my eyes more often than not to get a better view of things (crow’s feet very soon?) and notice how brittle my nails have become.

Granted, we can’t play God and stop the ageing process, but we certainly can slow it down by eating a healthy, balanced diet that promises all the essential vitamins and nutrients we need. But seriously though, who has the time (and money) for that? The last thing I want to do after a hard day’s work is to fret about what should be on my plate instead of indulging in the food I love (which more often than not are practically void of any nutritional value 馃檴 *cough* bubble tea and fried chicken *cough*). And honestly, I don’t know how some people do it but damn, it takes an insane amount of discipline to resist all the temptations in a food haven like Singapore!

That's not to say that I condone unhealthy lifestyle habits but there are times when we need to give ourselves a pat on the back, y'know? Like today, I wrestled with my dog just so that I could brush his teeth. Surely I deserved a bowl of laksa as reward?

That’s not to say that I condone unhealthy lifestyle habits but there are times when we need to give ourselves a pat on the back, y’know? Like today, I wrestled with my dog just so that I could brush his teeth. Surely I deserved a bowl of laksa as reward?

And while doing so, how do we ensure that we still meet our nutritional needs? That’s when multivitamins like Centrum庐 come into play!

Centrum for Women

Centrum for Women

A household name to even the least health-conscious Singaporeans *raises hand* (I mean, they’re not lauded as the world’s number 1 multivitamin brand for nothing!), Centrum庐 may have been around for as long as I can remember but it was only recently that I started taking the multivitamins (all the HPB infographics have definitely gotten to me). Unlike many other brands I’ve seen, Centrum庐 does not seem to take a one-size-fits-all approach – they have multivitamins catered to the various needs of each gender and age group (i.e. kids, teens, adults, elderly) specifically. Therefore, if you’re pushing 30 like me, Centrum庐 Women would be the ideal choice.

NEWSFLASH

Dear 90’s kids, you are old.聽

What is Centrum庐 Women all about, though?

Simply put, it is the complete multivitamin (A-Z!) that helps fill the specific nutrition gaps of women below 50 (hit the golden age? Here’s something else for you!).

Double the protection layer! Child-resistant caps and a protective seal which was a pain to peel in its entirety 馃槄

Double the protection layer! Child-resistant caps and a protective seal which was a pain to peel in its entirety 馃槄

Since men and women have different body compositions and nutritional needs, it would be ludicrous if we shared the same dietary supplement.

Since men and women have different body compositions and nutritional needs, it would be ludicrous if we shared the same dietary supplement.

So what’s in it for us? Based on the latest findings in nutritional science, Centrum庐 for Women has more Calcium, Magnesium and Vitamin D, as well as over 20 other important nutrients* to support optimal health for modern women from the inside out. Besides fostering a healthy immune system and maintaining bone strength, the multivitamin is also made up of the essentials that keep our eyes (great for OLs who need to spend hours in front of the computer screen), nails (hear ye, manicure addicts!), skin and hair functioning strong. Never seem to get adequate rest no matter how early you hit the sack? Perhaps the B vitamins (e.g. Vitamins B6, B12, and Folic Acid) and iron present in each tablet would be the answer to your tiredness and fatigue!

TL;DR in colour for you (you’re welcome!)

Let’s not forget the fact that women in my generation would also be in their childbearing years now. Getting enough of Folic Acid can greatly reduce the chances of neurological birth defects too!

*be sure to check if you are allergic to any of these vitamins or minerals

Each bottle contains 60 tablets which would essentially last you 2 months. And don’t you hate it when you miss your dosing schedule? Well, this hardly happens to me with Centrum庐 Women because there isn’t a strict regimen to follow per se. Pop one tablet a day with (optimally) or after any meal (but I usually take it with breakfast or lunch because kiasu) and you’re good!

If only these are grape flavoured!

If only these are grape flavoured!

Having only been on Centrum庐 Women for a month thus far, it is still too early to tell if it has improved my overall health (I’m not really in poor health to begin with lah.. I think.. hahaha hope I’m not jinxing myself). But one thing I know for sure is that my energy level has restored quite a bit. I guess that’s a good sign, eh? 馃榿

If you’re fortunate enough not to feel the effects of ageing yet (yet hor!), it won’t hurt starting on some of these multivitamins because it’s never too early to power up your life! So watcha waitin’ for?! Visit your nearest Watsons, Guardian or Unity Pharmacy outlet now!

REVIEW: M路A路C聽脳 Aladdin Lipsticks – Princess Incognito, Rajah & Whole New World

*blows off dust* …hello everyone?

First and foremost, I owe everyone an apology. This review was meant to be posted in the same month the collection was released, but my day job (and a pretty impromptu vacation) got the better of me. Thus, this post had been sitting in the draft for nearly three months now. Seeing that most of the items are still in stock online, I guess, it’s safe to say that I’ve not broken the rule of timeliness.

Plus, it’s only a matter of time before this collection gets shifted to their Goodbyes section so hopefully this review comes in handy for you deal scavengers!

Launched in May, this highly-anticipated (but y’know, I’ve learnt to take overzealous beauty announcement reactions with a pinch of salt) collection includes four lipsticks (Friend Like Me / Rajah / Princess Incognito / Whole New World), three Lipglasses (Diamond in the Rough / Jewels on Jewels / Magic Carpet Ride), a Crystal Glaze Gloss in #1 Wish, pigment in Rose, two Powder Blush (Your Wish is My Command / Always One Jump Ahead), a 9-pan eye shadow palette (Princess Jasmine) and a Technakohl Liner in Graphblack.

Inspired by the intricate patterns and complimentary turquoise and gold hues of the Kingdom of Agrabah, the packaging was unmistakably created with Princess Jasmine in mind (though I wish they had done more to the design like inverting the colours and make it similar to the box, perhaps? I don’t know, the gold just screams “Gerard Cosmetics” to me).

Once again, no prize for guessing what products I zoomed in on…

Never enough of lipsticks…

Princess Incognito is described as a neutral pinkyrose with a matte finish. Contrary to the colour depicted on the website, this applied mid-reddish beige on my lips which I thought would be too light on any skin tone darker than medium. The consistency felt fairly thick with a smooth texture and it went on with a fully opaque coverage. Despite its slightly drying formula, the product did not settle into or emphasise the lip lines. That said, I wouldn’t recommend this if you have naturally dry lips, as this may exacerbate chapped lips over time.

This shade was previously sold out when I first drafted this review, but has now been restocked.

Rajah is described as a muted red berry with a matte finish. This is the darkest shade of lipstick in this collection, one which I felt had the strongest association with Princess Jasmine. Even though this brownish red tugged on the lips a little, it was generally easy to apply. Minimal swipes (I’m talking about 2-3) could easily give you a full coverage but don’t be fooled by the appearance. It may look moisturising but it’s actually quite drying. The pictures speak volumes – you can tell how patchy it is on my lips in their relaxed state, and how my lip lines are emphasised. Don’t expect this to last the whole day on the lips – it faded to a tint after 4 hours, further emphasising the wrinkles of my lips.

Whole New World is described as a bright blue pink with a matte finish. This popular vibrant shade of cool fuchsia remains sold out on site, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out why. If you don’t want to settle for basic, this is it. Not only does this shade stand out rest, it also has a purple shift and a slight blue metallic sheen to it. Application-wise, it went on with a very smooth consistency, evenly coating my lips with an opaque colour. The product felt slightly drying but there was no emphasis on my lip lines and it even made my lips look hydrated for a long time! Furthermore, I thought this shade would look absolutely gorgeous on olive skin tones!

Swatch comparison for Whole New World

Swatch comparison for Whole New World

As a matte lipstick fanatic, this collection definitely ticks all the boxes. I was glad M.A.C had decided to do without lipsticks of predictable and tacky finishes that are “shining, glittering splendid”. Yay!

But since this collection revolves around a movie about characters of Arabic and/or Middle Eastern ethnicity, one would expect the products to be catered to medium to dark skin tones. Sadly, products like the powder blush (which is ridiculous – only one shade available and yet it wouldn’t even compliment Princess Jasmine’s skin tone) and Princess Incognito are just further proofs of M.A.C’s poor curating practices for their limited-edition releases. Perhaps they just didn’t see the need for that since sky-high profits are usually guaranteed for Disney collaborations.

And maybe it’s just me but I’m starting to feel the “limited edition fatigue”, especially when it comes to M.A.C. because they’ve been pushing out way too many collections (with products that are nothing out of the ordinary) that it’s becoming impossible for me (and my bank account) to keep up. Does anyone else share the same sentiments? Let me hear you in the comments below!

What do you think about this collaboration? If you’re too lazy busy to write a comment, simply take a quick poll below!
