REVIEW: MAC x Cinderella Eye Shadow and Lipsticks – Stroke of Midnight, Free as a Butterfly & Royal Ball

Hello lovelies!

Gosh, it’s been a while since I blogged anything about beauty. My parcels from MACCosmetics.com kept coming but I hardly had time to review them (photo-taking alone can take up to 2 hours per collection) due to my internship, so please bear with me! In the meantime, do check out my Instagram for more bite-sized updates 🙂

And at last, I’m finally able to write about the highly-anticipated M.A.C. x Cinderella collection which launched many donkey years ago. I’m late with my review again, sorry. But I do hope that this would still be able to help those who are hunting the items down on reseller markets.

Gorgeous! Have you caught the movie?

A huge collection that include 1 eye shadow palette (Stroke of Midnight), 2 Studio Eye Gloss (in Pearl Varnish and Lightly Tauped), 2 pigments (in Pretty It Up and Evil Stepmother) , 2 fluidline (in Macroviolet and Little Black Bow), Studio Fix Lash in Boldblack, 2 lipsticks (in Free as a Butterfly and Royal Ball), 2 tinted lipglass (in Glass Slipper and Happily Ever After), Beauty Powder in Mystery Princess, 1 Iridescent Powder in Coupe D’Chic, 1 Glitter in Reflects Pearl, 1 Blending Brush and 1 Large Angled Brush

I witnessed the items, especially them lipsticks, fly off the e-shelf on the day of launch. I think they went out of stock as fast at the Rocky Horror Picture Show collection. Many people couldn’t get what they wanted but lucky me actually predicted the launch time correctly (tip: never ever, ever rely on their mailers because they are sent to millions of subscribers and delays are inevitable) and managed to get everything on my shopping list.

An overview of what I bought 🙂 For the first time, I actually bought an eye shadow palette from MAC. The colours are just too irresistible.

SAMSUNG CSC

Call me biased (since Cinderella is my favourite Disney cartoon and it was always on replay on my TV screen when I was a kid), but this collection is nothing short of breathtaking. Let’s not go into details yet and admire the presentation of the items from this collection. They are in sweet, pearlised light lavender blue packaging that’s specially designed to match the colour of the gown that Cinderella is wearing in the movie poster. Absolutely lovely! 🙂

This collection comes with only 2 lipsticks (phew!) and it seemed like all eyes were already set on Royal Ball as it was the first item to sell out (followed by the iridescent powder). Both lipsticks are nude-coloured and have Lustre finish. Having owned quite a number of nude Lustre MAC lipsticks, I came to realise that they are all very under-utilised because somehow nude and lustre don’t work for me. Probably because I grew tanner, the shades are invisible on my lips and would sometimes wash me out. So I wasn’t really looking forward to adding the two lipsticks to my stash. :\

Free as a Butterfly is a Semisheer Golden Nude with a Lustre finish (US$17.50)

I’d say it’s actually very sheer on me. That is, even after layering it about four times.

SAMSUNG CSC

Okay, I probably see a slight difference in my lips because of the glossiness nature but definitely not something I’d spend US$17.50 / S$33 on if not for the packaging. The bullet was very slippery on my lips because it’s quite moist so I suspect that it would feather over time (not like you can see it anyway). Hence, also the reason why I think it wouldn’t last for more than an hour on my lips.

Royal Ball is a fleshy pink in Lustre finish (US$17.50)

One word: Disappointing 😦

I was expecting so much more than this but sigh, it turned out to be another Free as a Butterfly, but worse because I felt a little cheated. Where is the fleshy pink I see on the bullet? I was so attracted to the colour I saw on the official swatch (I’m pretty sure everyone else was too that’s why it’s so popular) but it appeared to be a totally different thing on my lips. I’m so grossed out, it kinda reminds me of a milder version of Happy Hibiscus which I sold a few years back because I absolutely hated it. Why, MAC, why?!

I don’t think I was ever so critical in my review but sigh, I really can’t help it 😦 I felt like I bought 2 of the same item because I really can’t tell them apart (besides the colour of the bullet).

But somebody please convince me that I look good in these two lipsticks because I really, really love the packaging hahaha. I’ll probably keep them for future swatch comparisons. 🙄

Oh well, at least I still have an eye shadow palette to hopefully cushion the blow of a disappointing purchase.

On me

This is MAC’s very own Naked (or Basics, since it’s so tiny, perfect for travelling) palette because it’s packed with 6 neutral shades. Five of these shades are already permanent but as you know, MAC likes selling its eye shadows in individual pots so having this palette would really save you a lot of time, money and space.

I’m probably too used to my Naked palettes but the eye shadows are quite difficult to work with because they are not really pigmented. They took me quite a number of swipes for them to be reasonably visible on my lids. Thus, it would never be my go-to palette during the morning rush hour. Having said that, it also has its upside, in terms of mistakes prevention. It’s perhaps more suited for people who are still experimenting with eye shadow colours 🙂

My favourite shades from this palette are Omega, Quarry and Satin Taupe. These were the easier ones to work with.

That’s all for this review! Do stay tuned for the next MAC review coming up very shortly 🙂

REVIEW: MAC Red Red Red Lipsticks – Toxic Tale and 5 Alarm

Hello ladies!

Hope you’re soaking up the Chinese New Year atmosphere wherever you are! I’ve been eating too much goodies lately that I’m starting to feel under the weather. On the bright side, I’m glad to have fallen sick before CNY because I had gotten ill during the festive season once and the feeling sucked. With understanding colleagues who allowed me to take a day off from work during this hectic time of the year to recuperate from my fever, I’m sure I’ll be back up and running in no time! 🙂

I hate being sick. I don’t want to sit idle at home! So how about another lipstick review, hmm? 🙂

And speaking of the Chinese New Year, have you ladies chosen your perfect red lipstick to go with your outfit? If none of the lipsticks in my FAVOURITE list managed to entice you, hopefully one of the two I’m about to feature would! *fingers crossed*

I'm pretty sure this collection is targeted at those celebrating the Chinese New Year. Look, even the model in the promotional poster is Asian!

I’m pretty sure this collection is targeted at those celebrating the Chinese New Year. Look, even the model in the promotional poster is Asian!

And yes, I know the MAC Red Red Red collection was launched online like eons ago, and recently at Singapore MAC outlets. Please pardon my tardiness this time. If you’ve gotten your lipsticks, good for you! If you haven’t and are still undecided on what to get, read on! This post would only take 5 minutes (or less) of your time 😉

macredredred6

Other lipstick shades not featured in this post are See Sheer (Grapefruit pink with Lustre finish) and Lady Bug (Yellow tomato with Lustre finish). This collection also includes a series of other eye and face products. Check out the full list here.

I only carted out Toxic Tale and 5 Alarm from this collection because the other two shades are already in the permanent range (i.e. they are available anytime). I also vaguely remember owning Lady Bug, just can’t really remember where I put it now. 😳

To be honest, all four shades look extremely gorgeous and wearable. They are versatile and not as striking as say, Ruby Woo or Lady Danger, and are suitable for all sorts of occasions. I’d highly recommend that you get all of them if you have the means. Otherwise, just pick any of the limited edition ones before they’re sold out!

Toxic Tale is actually a re-promote from the Venomous Villains collection launched in 2010. Back then, it was only US$15.50 despite the more fanciful packaging with the Snow White’s Evil Queen face printed on it. Now, the price has gone up by 50 cents even though no significant changes was made to the packaging (except that the Queen’s face is no longer there). Argh, inflation.

But price aside, I’m elated that it’s back! I’m in love with this colour and it’s definitely one of the few corals that looks flattering on my skin tone. Other coral shades I wore appeared to be either too bright or too orangey on me. This one is just perfect! I’ve also worn this to work several times and I must say that I’m impressed by its longevity.

Moving on to 5 Alarm!

Adding on to my favourite MLBB lipstick list is 5 Alarm, a nice semi-sheer lipstick with a luminous sheen. It is the only brand-new shade from this collection. I love it because it makes my lips look super hydrated (hides all the awful lip wrinkles) and healthy but like other MAC lipsticks with Lustre finish, it does not last very long on the lips, so be prepared for touch-ups every now and then. If you’re looking for something more subtle, this should do for you!

These are what I got. What about you, ladies?

Psst.. all four shades are (surprisingly) still available online! Go grab them now before it’s too late!

REVIEW: MAC Lipstick in Hautecore

Hey everyone!

Sorry for the lack of updates once again. There was a delay in the shipment of my latest batch of lipsticks (purchased before Christmas last year) so this review comes a little late. But it’s better late than never, right? 😉

If you’ve been following my blog, you’d know how much I adore dark lipsticks. The darkest shade of lipstick I had was Film Noir, which I absolutely love by the way, and I thought that was the darkest MAC could go but boy, was I ignorant! To my surprise, MAC had previously launched a black lipstick back in 2013 on Black Friday that was bound to make dark and vampy lipstick lovers pulsate with excitement. Of course, I wasn’t aware of the release because I hadn’t gotten into the whole lipstick craze then. It was available exclusively online and for that one day only.

Last December, the folks at MAC decided to bring it back again (yay!). Likewise, it was only for a day (near-midnight of 16 December in Singapore) and still an online-exclusive product. Hautecore sold like pancakes and it was all gone within hours of release. Thankfully I got mine and I’m so eager to share my thoughts about it with all of you!

Before and after comparison

Hautecore is the ultimate black which goth wannabes would die for. If you’re into Halloween parties, you may also like this. But be warned.. you will definitely get weird stares from passersby with Hautecore on because black lips are just so rare. Go for it only if you’re comfortable with standing out from the crowd and being the centre of attention!

SAMSUNG CSC

Put on a pair of shades and you’re ready to conquer the streets of Orchard!

It glides on well on my lips and despite having a Matte finish, it doesn’t feel dry at all. In fact it has a slight glossy feel which could possibly cause it to bleed (not sure about this as I haven’t tried wearing it for long hours). It doesn’t completely cover my natural lip colour so you can actually still see tinges of pink emanating from below the lipstick upon closer look, giving it a slight purple tint under sunlight. But I don’t think there is another shade that’s darker than this.

SAMSUNG CSC

Comparison with other dark shades I have in my stash!

Hautecore, however, is now sold out on MACCosmetics.com. If you’re interested, you may try searching for it on online marketplaces. But with such popularity, I’m sure this would be brought back again towards the end of the year. No promises, though!
