Mouth Restaurant @ Plaza Singapura

Hey everyone!

Ever since I moved into our new (temporary) place, I’ve been travelling to Orchard and Dhoby Ghaut quite often because there is a direct bus service to town! Whoops, this makes meet-ups with Carousellers so much easier. But I’m not going to talk about my hauls just yet (that’s coming pretty soon). Instead, I want to introduce you to my newfound favourite restaurant at Plaza Singapura if you haven’t been there yet. It’s called Mouth Restaurant!

I had walked past this restaurant several times because boyfriend and I used to dine at Itacho Sushi, which is smacked right beside Mouth Restaurant, a lot. But we never went in to try their dishes because being unadventurous, we’d rather patronise a more established restaurant (like Crystal Jade) for Chinese cuisine to ensure that our money is well-spent. Then recently, there was this article on TheSmartLocal about the best Liu Sha Baos (custard buns) in Singapore History and Mouth Restaurant made it on the list! That’s when I knew I had to dine there someday even though the author’s feedback isn’t very favourable. To each his own, right? 😀 Let’s also give Mouth Restaurant a chance to redeem itself!

Before entering, we stopped to look at the menu to see what else they had to offer. We didn’t see their famed Liu Sha Bao anywhere on the a la carte menu so we asked if they still sold the buns (in case they had already discontinued it which is kinda impossible la). Turns out, the Liu Sha Bao was only listed in their set meal menu. Whoa, so famous until they don’t see the need to publicise it anymore, is it? o_O

Anyway, their Crispy Noodles with Seafood in Thick Sauce looked promising, so we got one to share as we had ordered quite a number of appetizers and a dessert. Food was served rather quickly and what came first was the highlight of the meal! Yay. Full marks for speed of service!

Baked Salted Egg Yolk Bun (S$5.80++ for 3)

The appearance of the custard bun reminded me of the Char Siew Baos (barbequed pork buns) at Tim Ho Wan because they both have snow skin-baked crust. I knew immediately by the looks of it that the custard buns were gonna be AWESOME! And I was so darn right.

Boyfriend dug into his bun first and with just ONE bite, the molten custard splattered onto the table like nobody’s business. His fingers were covered with the gooey and delicious golden lava which he licked off without hesitation. Tempted, I took one bun, flipped it over and carefully sunk my teeth into a small corner of it, hoping that I wouldn’t trigger another explosion of custard. And I successfully did it! 😀 That, ladies and gentlemen, was SKILL! Haha.

mouthrestaurant-4

Awesome is an understatement

But that method didn’t work on my second bun. The molten custard still managed to leak out in the end -_- I guess that just shows how runny it was! I really hate it when custard buns turn out to be dry and not “流” at all. 😡

The second bun decided to break apart after my first bite :(

mouthrestaurant-13

Managed to get a proper picture with better lighting of the flowy custard!

mouthrestaurant-14

Look how “流” it is? *drools*

Having said that, the custard buns were AMAZEBALLS (or should I say, amazebunz)! Possibly the best I’ve tasted, beat Swee Choon’s and Canton Paradise’s hands down. It came in the right size (thus pricier) and the molten custard was absolutely tasty and most importantly, runny. Some may find it too greasy which I kinda agree (after trying it on my second visit and you can tell in the above picture) but still, the thickness of the custard and its right balance of salted and sweet outweigh everything negative about the bun! I love it so freakin’ much oh my god but I had to stop myself from ordering another one otherwise I’d get that terrible bloated feeling again.

Okay, enough gushing over the custard buns. Let’s move on to other items I ordered!

mouthrestaurant-2

Cuttlefish Balls (S$3.80++ for 3)

mouthrestaurant-9

Yumz

The cuttlefish balls are covered with what tasted like  Mamee noodles crispy noodles but surprisingly they went well with the balls. The unique appearance is also what sets them apart from the other traditional fried cuttlefish balls. However the tough texture of it meant that it would be difficult to stick a fork into it. A bite of it reveals the cooked cuttlefish paste and some mayonnaise.

mouthrestaurant-10

Desert Prawn with Salted Egg (S$18++)

mouthrestaurant-8

Salted egg overload with a sprinkle of hazelnut

We ordered this mainly because it was a recommended dish on the menu. We were pleased with the presentation and all until we tried our first prawn. Taste wise, it’s a little too bland and it could be more buttery. Our prawns were very grainy and dry and we couldn’t really taste much of the salted egg. I would prefer the sauce to be more creamy than clumpy. We expected better since it was the priciest dish we ordered 😦

mouthrestaurant-3

Crispy Noodles with Seafood (S$16++)

mouthrestaurant-1

Very fresh prawns that are so crunchy on the outside and succulent on the inside

The sahng-min (“生面”, or crispy noodles as I always call it) came with a lot of fresh ingredients: prawns, sliced fish, cut squid, mushrooms, vegetables and carrots. Basically every part of it was very fresh. The thick and luscious gravy made every bite of the noodles so enjoyable!

mouthrestaurant-7

Chilled Pomelo Sago with Mango (S$4.50++)

Our dinner at Chinese restaurants typically ends with a Mango Sago dessert or its equivalent. Mouth Restaurant’s version was not too bad, but I hope it could be a little sweeter and thicker 🙂

It was a great meal in general and I will definitely recommend it to everyone! Furthermore there never seems to be a queue outside the restaurant (not sure why it’s so underrated) even during peak hours so if you’re one who hates queuing, you should give Mouth Restaurant a go! I will certainly be back again especially for the Baked Salted Egg Yolk Bun 😀

Lady M Confections @ Marina Square

Hey guys!

I wanted to blog about a confectionery that my boyfriend had recommended to me and yup, it’s called Lady M. Apparently it’s a confectionery originated from New York City and I believe the Singapore stores are its only overseas outlets.

Lady M

Shop interior. There is a takeaway booth at the back and you don’t have to queue for that!

We went to the Marina Square branch (the other is at One Fullerton) yesterday after attending my niece’s baby shower and we spotted a long queue at the entrance when we were there! It must be really good, I thought. We waited for about 20 minutes before we finally got a table. With a budget of $30 (which I subsequently increased to $40 lol), we ordered two of their signature cakes and a pot of Earl Grey Tea.

ladym14

Cake and beverage menu (Click on picture to enlarge)

ladym1

I thought it’s quite important to mention that Lady M serves free iced water! And it comes in this bigger-than-usual good quality plastic cup. To me, offering free iced water is the first step to breeding goodwill among customers but restaurants here rarely do it nowadays.

ladym2

Our pot of Earl Grey Tea (S$5 without taxes) was enough to serve 2. It was very fragrant, rich and made of very high quality tea leaves. Highly recommended!

Their cakes are layered with “no less than twenty paper-thin handmade crêpes…with ethereal light pastry cream”. In other words, they are America’s kueh lapis 😛

ladym6

Boyfriend ordered their most popular crepe cake – Vanilla Mille Crepes (S$8/slice without taxes). I tried it and it’s really not bad. The vanilla frosting isn’t too strong and you’d crave for more with every bite.

ladym7

Side view. Look at how creamy it is!

ladym11

As a green tea lover, I went with Green Tea Mille Crepes (S$8.50/slice without taxes) which is 70% covered with green tea powder – on top and infused into every layer.

ladym10

Side view – Made of very layers of thin, soft, green tea powdered crepe. For hardcore green tea fans only.

ladym9

Back view – the edges of the crepes

ladym8

The crepes fall out very easily when sliced, making my plate very messy 😦

I’m not a huge cake fan to begin with, so going to a confectionery didn’t really excite me. But their mille crepes were a refreshing change from the usual layer cakes. I didn’t enjoy the Green Tea Mille Crepes as much as the Vanilla one though because I felt that the former is a little too green tea overdose? It’s not bad at the first bite but you’d get sick of it gradually. However you may love it if you’re a big green tea lover.

We still had some time to burn after having our cakes so we went through their soup menu. Both my boyfriend and I love mushroom soup so we got ourselves a bowl of Vanilla Mushrooms to share. Vanilla?? Interesting. But I’m afraid nothing in there is vanilla at all.

ladym12

If you’re not in the mood for cakes, they have other food alternative as well! (I actually misread “Fig Tart” as “Big Fart” the very first time I looked at this menu lol)

ladym5

A bowl of Vanilla Mushroom (S$10 without taxes) is enough for 2 people if you’re not very hungry. But it’s really nice so I regret sharing it with boyfriend.

ladym4

Soup made of Shimeiji mushrooms, white truffle essence and cheesy croutons. It’s totally meat-free thus it’s also a vegetarian-friendly appetiser. What stood out on my taste bud about this soup is the white truffle essence. It really enhanced the taste of the soup!

ladym3

The egg york caught us by surprise! We didn’t know there was egg in it since this isn’t mentioned on the menu. Broke the poached egg and mixed it with the soup! It was a brilliant combination!

ladym13

Happy boy finally satisfied his craving.

Perhaps I’m really not a fan of pastries but I personally feel that their crepe cakes are overrated. I may be wrong since boyfriend loved it so much. Thus I would come back again but obviously not for the cakes. I would for the mushroom soup! It’s honestly one of the best I’ve had and I will definitely not share it with anyone LOL. I would love to try their starters as well probably when I’m ready to splurge again coz they are pretty pricey.

My total damage was S$37.10 including 10% government tax and 7% service charge. Service was satisfactory as the staff were very friendly and welcoming.

I went back again on 18 June as part of a plan for my boyfriend’s birthday celebration and had Red Velvet cake. They seemed to have added new items on their menu coz I didn’t see Red Velvet on my first visit.

Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura

Note: This is not a food review because I’m not a food connoisseur so I’d prefer to call this my “food encounter” instead. In fact anything tastes nice to me as long as I’m hungry.

Two weeks ago, Bf and I were at Plaza Singapura contemplating whether to join the extremely long queue (2 lines) to get into Tim Ho Wan. I resisted as first as it would take us more than an hour to enter judging from the length of the queue. But I gave in eventually because I also wanted to try their dimsums! The queue had shortened substantially as compared to the first few days of opening (more than 3 lines from my understanding) but the wait was still more than an hour. They had also placed more chairs outside of the restaurant which I thought was a pretty thoughtful move 🙂

While trying to kill time, a waiter came out and served each and everyone of us bottled water! Wow I was totally impressed with their customer service – even before we bought anything from them and I really appreciate that thoughtful gesture. It was definitely not necessary for them to do so since they’re already so popular that people are willing to wait 2-3 hours just to dine there. So before I even tasted their food, I was all set to go back again!

We were given an order chit before we got a table and we ordered food portions that were enough to feed 3. Hahaha oh by the way it was my first time there as you can see, but it was my Bf’s second. He recommended me the nice ones (aiya everything is nice there seriously) he had previously and me wanting to try other stuff, added more to our orders! In the end our bill totalled up to close to $70 (solely dimsums. Madness right? BUT OUR TUMMIES SO HAPPY)

Siew Mai - juicy and the prawns were really crunchy and fresh!

Rice with chicken, sausage and mushroom - this was dope man. DOPE. I didn't expect it to be so delicious. Definitely a must-have next time when I go there! Chicken is tender and it just makes you crave for more!!

Steamed egg cake - something like the Malay colourful kueh, you know? Really soft and great for kids but I kinda regretted ordering this even though it was nice.. because it somehow filled up my stomach unnecessarily -_- Yup I could've eaten more.

Har gao (prawn dumpling) - nice but there's nothing really special or different about this. Just another har gao in my opinion. Of course there were people who really loved it!

Vermicelli Roll with Shrimp a.k.a. Chee Cheong Fun! Another so-so dish, nothing fantastic! For cheaper and better chee cheong fun, you guys can try the "Teng Yu" at Far East Plaza, located on the basement! It's a small store and they serve good chee cheong fun in many flavours.

Baked bun with pork - OMG WORDS CAN'T DESCRIBE HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS. The exterior is soft and slightly crunchy at the same time and the pork is just fresh and flavourful! It must be a really popular dish that Tim Ho Wan had to restrict each patron to only 1 plate of it (1 plate has 3 buns).

Last but not least, a dessert! Ordered this yam dessert with sago and it was not too bad! But because we were already very full from all the food before it, we kind of forced this down our throat..

Food makes me happy! Me with my favourite from the menu :D

Food makes me happy! Me & my favourite from the menu 😀

The food came really fast and empty plates were cleared swiftly as well (a cue to patrons who were done with their meals to leave because there were people waiting to get in). Our poor stomachs couldn’t accommodate all the food we ordered so we took away 2 baked buns. We figured that we were too full to consume them that night so we gave them to my parents, who fell in love with Tim Ho Wan instantly and even asked why I only took 2 home -_-

Okay this is just a short entry to make you salivate and hungry at this unearthly hour hahahaha.
