Revisiting Taiwan, the Land of Smiles (PART 1)

Deciding upon our travel destination for our year-end holiday wasn’t an easy feat for boyfriend wanted to go to Japan while I wanted Hong Kong. We even resorted to playing Scissors, Paper, Stone (our way of making decisions coz we’re too cool for coin flipping) but boyfriend backed out when I won because he didn’t want to go to a Cantonese-speaking country due to his inability to speak/understand that dialect -_- Smelly.

So we settled on Taiwan! It would be our second time there which I didn’t mind at all as I absolutely loved that place. In addition, we could also experience their winter season since it was summer when we went there 2 years before.

I know Taiwan isn’t the “official” land of smiles (that’d be Thailand) but I personally feel that the friendliness and kindness of the Taiwanese beat the Thai’s hands down. No offence to Thai people and their supporters 😦

However because we were both financially broke, we only booked our flight tickets and hotel two weeks before our trip when we had saved enough LOL! Talk about super last minute. So obviously the rates weren’t very attractive, maybe except for the hotel which was on discount on Expedia. We actually took DAYS to finalise our lodging plans because all the hotels available were either too expensive (FX Hotel S$1000+ per night wtf) or too lok-kok (rundown). I’m super particular about hygiene and cleanliness so I wouldn’t want to stay in places where there isn’t daily room make up. But looking at the choices we had then, we could only stay in serviced apartments so bo bian we booked for one. Then days later, I found a better deal in a legit hotel located at a shopping district some more. So 还想什么?TAKE!

We spent about S$1700 each for transport and accommodation for a 9-day-8-night trip. Not too bad la hor? *self-comforting*

We flew with Jetstar this time because it offered the lowest rate among all the budget airlines. SCOOT Y U NO HAVE CHEAP TICKETS IN DECEMBER!? As it was our second time flying with that airline, we knew how miserably small the legroom is so we paid more for extra legroom seats on our flight to Taiwan especially since we were on an early morning flight (at 7-ish am) and we wanted a more spacious seat to sleep on. Even after adding in the extra charges, Jetstar’s tickets were still the cheapest. 5 hours in the air flew by very quickly because we were dog-tired.

We arrived at Taoyuan Airport close to noon and spent the next hour queueing up at the immigration counter and getting our SIM card. We spent NT$1000 on taxi to get to our hotel at Xi Men Ding (coz once again 梁少爷 a.k.a the boyfriend is too lazy to take public transport).

GoSleep Hotel Hankou

GoSleep Hotel (Hankou) – our home for the next 8 nights!

I actually did a search on the hotel before the trip and found some undesirable pictures of the lobby LOL. They got me very worried because they made the hotel seem very shady. I mentally prepared myself and boyfriend (kept telling him that the hotel looks la sam) so that we wouldn’t get a rude shock there.

Building directory

Building directory

Signpost by the road

Look out for this signpost if you’re going to this hotel for the first time!

Go Sleep shares the same building with other facilities not owned by the hotel, such as night club, bowling alley and ice skating rink on the first few levels. Hotel rooms are all on the 7th, 8th and 9th floors which you’d need to scan your hotel room card in the lift to access. However one of the lifts (there are 2) had a faulty scanner so anyone could access these levels without the card. The hotel also provides rooms at hourly rates…… Thus, this hotel is probably shady. LOL but my stay there throughout the trip was rather pleasant. Never did I once feel my safety threatened so okay I deem this hotel safe to stay in!

Hotel corridor

Hotel corridor. This photo doesn’t do the hotel justice.. It’s really not as bad as it seems upstairs 😛

Our room door

Room toilet

Room toilet. Not that bad right? The bath tub is the biggest I’ve seen in a hotel so far. Toilet is also well-kept.

Our room

No cupboard/wardrobe but hangers are provided for your convenience! I don’t use hotel’s wardrobes anyway (cos they tend to have this rotten smell inside).

Near the exit of the room

Room door is magnetic. The door hanger was made of paper when we first checked into the hotel but they have since switched to using magnetic ones after the new year 😛 That’s my huge-ass luggage you see there, almost exploding. (Yup these pictures were taken on my final day in Taiwan)

Not bad, the room is very modern looking. It’s clean and well-maintained too!

Every room is designed differently. I had seen the interior of other rooms on my way out as well and I must say those with windows are damn gorgeous. They totally do not look like what you’d expect in a hotel with a dubious-looking lobby Hahaha!!

My hotel booking comes with daily breakfast but we only had it once there because we’re not morning people. There wasn’t much variety anyway so I didn’t feel like I missed out a lot. The only nice thing there was probably the DIY braised pork rice.

We didn’t have to worry about food at Ximending because there were food vendors at every corner of the street. At night, there would be a pushcart near our hotel lobby selling sausages cooked on the spot at just NT$30 per piece. We had that for almost every night! The smell was just too tempting and irresistible.

Artsy fartsy at XMD

Honestly this Taiwan trip is rather impromptu. Our half-past-six 9-day itinerary lacked proper research (planned to go Taipei Zoo at 2pm when it closes at 4.30pm HAHA WIN!) and we also didn’t follow it very closely. It was really an own-time-own-target trip, going to places as and when we liked. Dusk fell more rapidly duing cold weather and it would be already be dark by 5pm! Moreover the coldness outside made us very lazy and on certain days we’d just bum around in our hotel room until late afternoon to have dinner. This, ladies and gentlemen, is what I call a holiday LOL. Hence I’ll just cover places I hadn’t been to during my first Taiwan trip, sorted by day.

* * DAY 1 * *

Cafe Wakuwaku (Xi Men Ding)

It was an hour too early to check into our hotel so we left our luggages at the reception and proceeded to have our lunch elsewhere. We walked around the area and found this cafe which served mainly western food. We went up (it was on the second storey) despite wanting to eat something truly Taiwanese because we were starving!

Calamari

Crispy fried calamari with mayo dip! I can’t remember if I liked it.. which isn’t a good sign. Haha oh wait maybe I did!

It was a great start to our trip because we enjoyed our food very much! They were pretty darn good! *kisses fingers* Each set comes in rather generous portions and most importantly, they are really affordable! Less than S$10 per set and you leave the cafe feeling like you ate at a buffet table. Hahaha! Free wifi (I believe it belongs to the building which houses a hotel called inHouse and apparently this cafe also belongs to the hotel) is also available.

Dessert

Dessert! I still have no idea what this was.

I’m not sure what was for dessert but it has a little coconut taste so it could be coconut cake.

Ah Zhong Mian Xian

Ah Zhong Mian Xian

Ah Zhong Mian Xian

To start off our 9-day authentic Taiwanese diet, we went hunting for Ah Zhong Mian Xian’s flagship store at Ximending which was just a stone’s throw away from our hotel. Boyfriend wanted to try it so badly so I just tagged along even though I wasn’t very eager to have it (I’m not even a mee sua fan at home.. they just smell and look so unappetising to me). With a vicinity map provided by our hotel, we managed to find the shop without breaking a sweat.

Cashier

Cashier

I had always thought that it would look like some traditional mee sua shop (it must be the “Ah Zhong”) with proper dining tables and chairs. But contrary to my assumption, the serving area and kitchen take up the entire unit. There are (very limited number of) chairs but no table so everyone either eat with the bowl in their hand standing up or sitting down.

A long queue had already formed when we arrived but it also moved very quickly. Our turn came within a few minutes of waiting and our mian xian was also ready for collection right after we ordered. So efficient man. There were also sauces (vinegar included) somewhere which you could add to your mian xian.

One bowl first to try!

One bowl first to try!

Boyfriend ordered a large bowl so that he could share it with me. I reluctantly took a spoonful and was surprised to find myself liking it as well. It tastes like some low-grade shark’s fin soup you find in pasar malams but better lah. But what spoilt the dish for me were the pig’s intestines. I’m not a fan of animal intestines as I think they taste as bad as they smell and their rubbery texture really gross me out.

The gravyyyyy

The gravyyyyy

Boyfriend loved it so much, he ate there four times throughout the trip. Dining in Ximending can be expensive so if you’re looking to satisfy your hunger pangs with something not-so-unhealthy (Hot Star is nearby also) yet filling, you should consider trying their mian xian! 🙂

Prior to the trip, boyfriend kept reminding me not to plan a shopping itinerary and to include more sights and attractions so that we could stretch our dollars. Last Taiwan trip, we went near-broke on the third day of our seven-day trip because of my excessive shopping LOL. We had to rely on credit cards in the end. Hopefully history doesn’t repeat itself 😛 We’ll see..

So yup, we arrived at one of the well-known memorial halls in Taipei. The history of the memorial hall, which was built to honour the Republic of China’s National Father Dr Sun Yat-sen, can be seen all over in the building. If you’re a history junkie, this is the attraction for you. But I was too lazy to read so I surrendered after reading those few near the entrance.

If you think this is a museum of Sun Yat-sen, high five! That was what I thought too but .. it isn’t LOL. Bimbo moment. It is, somewhat like our Esplanade, a multi-purpose social, educational and cultural center for the public. We saw many youngsters having their dance practice near the entrance which revitalised the traditional-looking building.

The main highlight of our trip there was, however, to watch the change of guards. If you plan to visit any memorial hall, be sure to stay until you see the guards change shifts. They happen every hour (e.g. 1pm, 2pm, etc.) and we were lucky to be able to catch it the moment we stepped into the main hall (second level I think. When in doubt, just follow the crowd HAHA).

Raohe Night Market

In order to get to Raohe we had to cut through Wufenpu (what a perfect excuse to go there TEEHEE!!) so we spent some time rummaging the garment market for things to buy BUT because it’s the cold season there, majority of the stuff sold were not suitable for Singapore’s humid climate so we didn’t buy much. I accidentally bought a pair of army print flats at S$70 because I heard the price wrongly!!!! It’s pricey because the salesgirl claimed that it was imported from South Korea which brings me to my next question… (please ignore blockquote if you’re not in the mood to read my rant)

WHY ARE ITEMS IMPORTED FROM KOREA ALWAYS SO EXPENSIVE?

Etude House, The Face Shop, Laneige, Skinfood and the list goes on.. Things there are NEVER cheap outside of South Korea. It’s like shop owners capitalise on the k-craze and mark up the price of anything that comes from Korea. Please la, is Korea so dai sai (big whoop) until can be more expensive than European/American/Japanese products ah?! I’m sorry, NO! Having owned so many Korea-imported apparels in the past, I can vouch that the material is not as godly as people always claim to be lor please. Korean cosmetics are also not very fantastic leh!? I owned a Laneige palette, a Somang BB cream and used TFS face masks (which were ALL gifted to me thankfully) and I did not find anything so special about them that warrants the high price. Why are people so gaga over them when they’re so EXPENSIVE!?! Anyway, I swear that no matter how much I like a product, the moment the salesperson quotes me an exorbitant price and reasons it with “because it’s imported from Korea”, I’d leave the shop immediately. Period.

Whatever it is, that was my most regretful purchase from Taiwan. 😥

Ok back to Raohe, I mentioned about this place before on my previous Taiwan entry so I’m not gonna elaborate much on it. So allow me to indulge you with food pictures taken in Raohe. There were quite a number of new stalls there!

Zhen Pin Yang Shen Fang (珍品養生坊)

We were craving for some hot desserts to keep ourselves warm in that chilly weather. As our hotel was situated towards the back of Ximending, we would have to walk past several food stores to get to the train station and this dessert shop was one of them (Yong He Dou Jiang is just beside it). Feeling famished and cold, we got ourselves a table and ordered a bowl of mini colourful glutinous rice balls with no filling to temporarily satisfy our hunger. But it was sooo good (maybe coz we were skipped breakfast and lunch lah, hungry like mad) so we ordered another bowl of glutinous rice balls with black sesame paste filling. It totally kept us warm for the next few hours!

Dazzling Cafe

I planned to visit this cafe after Taipei 101 on day 2 since they are in close proximity. However boyfriend chickened out once again (we wanted to go there on our first trip -_-) due to his fear for heights and so the entire itinerary was changed. We wanted to try their highly-acclaimed honey toasts anyway so we rescheduled this to day 3.

Getting there is relatively easy as it’s just about 5 minutes walk away from its nearest metro station, Zhongxiao Dunhua. Hidden from the area with high human traffic, it’s tucked beside a rather narrow road. You’ll need to go behind the main shopping buildings to locate it. (When in doubt, use GPS) Once you’re there, you should be able to spot its huge sign display stand.

Operating hours, FYI

Operating hours, FYI

Like any other themed cafes in Taiwan, you’d need to make reservation prior to your visit because they are very popular with the locals and foreigners. Silly me didn’t do so so we had to wait for a few minutes (which was pretty fast actually) before we could get a table.

We shared one Dazzling Classic Honey Toast because we also read that a portion is able to feed 2! Very true indeed. One is just nice for our stomachs and we were probably one of those few who managed to clear our plate. Other patrons who ordered for each individual gave up after a few mouthfuls. On top of that, we also got ourselves each a drink as we also read about their one-drink-per-customer policy online. However when we were there, we weren’t advised so by the waitress so they probably changed it.

Ordered this because of the one-drink-per-customer policy. Not sure if this rule is still in place!

The honey toast was really good in my opinion but overrated to boyfriend. Thus I conclude that it’s nice only to those who are suckers for sweet stuff HAHAHA. I thought the inner toast were really soft and they go really well with the ice cream! The “walls” are partly coated with sugar and I poured maple syrup over it. YUMMMMEH thinking about it makes me want to go back and try other flavours!

Honestly I think my appetite grew bigger since I arrived in Taiwan because I wasn’t very full after having the toast. I even wanted to order another one but I knew I wouldn’t be able to finish everything all on my own so I dropped the idea and got myself macarons instead!

Hello Kitty Cafe

I know I had blogged about this before already but I.. just cannot exclude my second time there on this entry hehe. Hello Kitty cafe is probably the most popular themed cafe in Taiwan and you can almost never get a table if you haven’t made prior reservation. I did through e-mail about one week before the scheduled date and I received a confirmation from them within the next hour. SO EFFICIENT!

Anyway, the reservation was voided because I overslept (disadvantage of a free-and-easy trip lol). They had already given my table to another walk-in customer by the time I arrived (about 20 minutes later) 😦 But luckily they were kind enough to offer me a table albeit only available an hour later. In the meantime, boyfriend and I went to SOGO just across the street to get some Beard Papa snacks.

SOGO in Taiwan kinda reminds me of our Takashimaya (many departments, usually for branded stuff, and a mega mart) but they have many branches across the country.

We walked around the area after getting a quick bite and found our homegrown brand, Bee Cheng Hiang! Judging from the small crowd in the shop, I reckon that 肉干 (dried pork jerky charqui) or BCH is quite popular with the Taiwanese. Here in Singapore, you can hardly see anybody in the Bee Cheng Hiang stores here unless it’s the lunar new year, right!? Boyfriend wanted to see if the taste of the charqui differed in another country so he bought 100g of it to try.

The cafe looked understaffed and the service crew was running around frantically attending to customers and it took quite awhile for them to take our orders.

Their food was their saving grace.

I felt my bowel movements (lol) once I was done with my food so I went to the ladies! No one was in there so I had the entire toilet to myself to camwhore LOL. The toilet is so pink and pretty! I felt bad smearing their toilet bowl with my faeces. HEHEHE JUST KIDDING.

The bill came up to NT$1529 which is equivalent to about S$65 (probably more than that since I paid by card and you know, the exchange rates offered by banks are crazy). Not very reasonable considering that they served cold boston steak. Pfftttt. Most likely won’t be returning again :\

Zhu Ji Beef Steak Wonton (朱記牛排餛飩專賣)

At night, boyfriend was already on the hunt for another beef steak to make up for the awful cold one he had at Hello Kitty cafe. I searched online for recommendations in Ximending but they were all rather expensive and we wanted to preserve our funds for the next few remaining days in Taiwan. Then boyfriend recalled seeing an eating place beside our hotel building which served all kinds of steak! Fish steak, chicken steak, beef steak.. you name it, they have it. Hahaha!

I kept reading it as 牛猪鱼排排排..

The place was rather vacant when we went there. Being a Singaporean who associates queues/crowd with popularity for eateries, I have to admit that I was quite sceptical about the taste of their food at first. Boyfriend and I ordered beef steaks on hot plate. We expected them to just serve us just that because there wasn’t any indication on the order chit that it came with something else. Furthermore the price was also very reasonable for an a la carte menu.

Then the food came…

We were pleasantly surprised! Placed on top of the soup bowl was what we’d call the Taiwanese roti prata. The meal also came with a cup of plum drink and the beef portion was huge for a meal which costed only S$6!?! OMG MAN. If you’re broke and hungry in Ximending, I’d totally recommend this place for its very value-for-money food!

That’s all for days 1-4! I’ve decided to split the entire trip into 2 parts because there are just too many pictures to blog about! Stay tuned for the next instalment 🙂

My Skin Imperfections + How to Clear Pimples

Hello ladies (and maybe gentlemen as well)! Hope all of you had a splendid new year! I spent mine in Taiwan and I will definitely find time to blog about it soon!

Last week while looking into my mirror like how I’d usually do to prep myself for a night out, it occurred to me that my complexion wasn’t as bad as it looked 10 years ago when I had my first sudden outbreak of acne. I was kinda astonished because it was my time of the month and I expected more red bumps on my cheeks.

They say pictures are deceiving – that’s certainly true for me. I never had flawless skin since I was 15 when I started breaking out on my forehead, cheeks and jawline (strangely zits rarely formed on my nose). Prior to that, I had smooth and supple skin 😦 I was obviously not very proud of my complexion so I photoshopped my pictures ever since (which is a blessing in disguise because that was how I honed my photoshopping skills LOL) before publishing them online. My skin was at its worst during my secondary school days. My confidence plunged to the lowest level then and I totally avoided making eye contact during conversations as I didn’t want to see the other party scrutinising every detail on my face. Every pimple I popped, a few more would appear. I was so afraid to walk into pharmacies because I’d definitely get approached by salesgirls trying to promote me acne products. It was so depressing that I even broke down before my Mom once!

My acne-prone skin is definitely not hereditary though, for both my parents had perfect skin when they were young. My sister who is turning 20 this year, no matter how unhealthy her diet and lifestyle are, maintains a flawless complexion and has never had more than 3 zits on her face. Something must have gone wrong in my body system – I just can’t figure out what.

Nauseating pictures coming up. Swallow whatever’s in your mouth.. You’ve been warned.

Pimply me

Pimply me back in 2007 with Angel, who has passed away last August 😥

Pimply me 2

In 2007 again. SEE THAT BIG PIMPLE ON MY CHEEK?! homg.

Instead of berating my parents for giving me bad genes (lol), I tried all sorts of crazy pimple home remedies in hopes of clearing my skin before I entered Poly. I’ve tried applying toothpaste which stung my skin really bad, the juice of aloe vera, lemon (another bad choice) and cucumber. Sadly none of them worked at all so I turned to over-the-counter pimple treatments. The first I got was OXY pimple cream which gave me swollen face every time I used it.. because (I later realised) I’m allergic to Benzoyl Peroxide – the supposed chemical that kills pimple-causing bacteria. How unlucky can I get? Am I destined to have awful complexion? 😦 Then I got Avène, which improved my skin condition a little BUT somehow my face became oilier. Seriously?

I stopped using pimple cream entirely because it was taking a toll on my wallet (I was like 17 or younger. No money!). I tried drinking plenty of water but the zits left and returned with a vengeance what the hell. I almost gave up hope until one day somebody recommended me what seemed to be a dietary supplement. He was one of the buyers of Angel‘s puppies in 2007 and was taken aback by my terrible skin condition LOL. I was hesitant at first as it was pricey and the guy was also a part of the company which also makes him a promoter (something like MLM). But I gave it a shot still because desperate times call for desperate measures – my first Poly semester was commencing in a few weeks’ time! On top of that, he also allowed payment to be made later so I guess it ain’t that bad.

To my surprise, it kinda worked! I also lost some weight in the process – from 55kg to 48kg, my lightest on the scale. I still had some tiny zits here and there but I saw improvement in my skin generally. I stopped taking it after a few months because I was afraid that I’d be too dependent on it. Maybe due to this reason, my zits made a comeback. My face appeared mo-pengy (pot holes) side view because of the many tiny zits on my cheeks. Argh, so sickening!

Don’t bother asking the product name (nope, not Accutane) because it has been discontinued.

Then came my final year in Poly when I had to get an internship as required by the school. I managed to clinch a placement in a (now defunct and I’m so glad it did) fashion magazine as a design intern. F-A-S-H-I-O-N. It was like an Ugly Betty moment for me. How can a pimply-faced girl work for a fashion magazine? No way, I need to get rid of my zits. NEED.

It’s funny how easy an internship changed my lifestyle, probably because my grade was at stake. I associated appearance/image with confidence. With confidence, you’ll do well and if you perform well in your internship, you’ll get a good grade. I believe this applies to everything else you do. Oh and that was also when I started applying more make-up to boost my image hahahaha!

So yup as mentioned, I started leading a healthier lifestyle for the sake of looking good to feel good. Throughout my internship, I saw more radiance on my face with lesser zits – many times none – and my skin was also smoother which makes applying make-up so much easier! This was also achieved without the help of acne supplements and remedies.

For the benefit of those with troubled skin, this was how I cleared my pimples without spending a single cent:

  • Go to bed by 11.00 pm daily. This is a MUST.
If you’re one who have got accustomed to sleeping past midnight, give yourself 30 minutes of buffer time to toss and turn in bed. You’ll get used to turning in early in no time!
  • Pin your fringe back (or wear a strong hair band) when sleeping
Sometimes your fringe can aggravate your acne so it’s best to keep your hair off your face.
  • Change pillow sheets regularly (maybe once a week, or once every 2 days for the kiasus)
Your acne-causing bacteria may be living in your pillow sheet since your face comes in close contact with it every night. It’s best to ensure you have a clean surface to rest your troubled skin on every night. When I travel, I bring a clean towel and I lay it on the hotel pillow before I sleep. 潔癖。
  • Don’t lie on your pillow/sleep without washing up first
..because by doing so, you’re transferring more bacteria to your sleeping area!
  • Drink lots of water (8 cups or 2 litres for me)
This rule remains because water does help in ridding acne in a way.
  • If you need to pop a pimple, make sure you do it correctly
Those who advised against popping pimples, seriously… You like seeing people with pus-filled spots, is it? -_- Anyway, I’ve been popping mine since I was 15 so I’m pretty skilled at it LOL. Make sure you wash your hands before doing so, and squeeze out the root of the pimple (hard yellow thingy followed by lotsa blood) or else it’s as good as not popping it at all. It will leave a scar of course but facial cream should be able to lighten it.
  • Exercise or jog regularly
Yup, this definitely work for me! Your skin clears up and you lose weight. That’s killing two birds with one stone 🙂

1. Exercise helps by increasing blood circulation, carrying nutrients and oxygen to the skin and other cells, and transporting toxins and cellular waste for removal from the body, and

2. Exercise helps alleviate stress.  Studies have shown that stress hormones can increase oil production in the sebaceous glands, which is bad news for those already prone to acne.

Unfortunately once internship ended, I reverted to my old lifestyle. However I didn’t break out that often because I’ve learned how to take care of and pamper my skin.

Some product recommendations with pictures taken from Google because I’m just too lazy to snap my own pictures. These are also what I’m currently using:

1. ORIGINS Spot Remover

Origins Spot Remover

Image from tattooedtealady.com // Retails at S$29 at local Origins counters.

The image above shows “Super Spot Remover” but what we have here (unless they’ve changed it) is just “Spot Remover”. Not very affordable since it comes in a very small bottle BUT it lasted me for about 6 months because all you need is a small amount each time. It dries up within minutes of application and it has this menthol feel which is great! Coz it means it’s doing something hahaha! It helped clear some of my small zits but generally not effective on my bigger/more unsightly ones. However it’s a highly-raved product! It’ll probably work well on others.

2. Mentholatum ACNES Medicated Skincare

I first got this in trial size as part of my WKWSCI welfare pack last year. I’m usually very lazy to get out of my comfort zone and use product samples but I’m so glad I wasn’t for this!

Acnes Sealing Jell

Image from justjaslin.com // Retails at about S$9 at Watsons if I remember correctly

Acnes Powder Lotion

Image from thesnowflowerrr.blogspot.com // Forgot how much it retails for in Watsons but it should be less than S$10.

I only use 2 out of 3 products from this series: powder lotion and sealing jell. The last one is actually the face wash which I never touched since I already using one I’m comfortable with. The sealing jell is damn tokong I tell you! IT REALLY WORKS WONDERS!! Zits seldom appear ever since I started using the gel (jell?). I also apply it directly onto my popped pimples and they reduce greatly in size by the next morning! I’m using the full-sized ones and they are easily my favourite acne products at the moment!

3. 3M Nexcare Skin Care Acne Patch

3M Nexcare Acne Patch

Image from vivawoman.net // Retails at about S$5 for a box of 18 and $9 for a box of 36 in Watsons

Before I discovered Acnes products, I had been using Nexcare acne patch to tame my huge pus-filled pimples. I have been using this for YEARS and I believe I have spent hundred of dollars on this already hahaha! Basically this product “acts like a sponge to absorb the oily secretion, fluid or pus” of the pimple and yes, it works exactly like that! NO GIMMICK! The patch turns white and gooey on the side where it faces your pimple after a few hours of sucking. If you’re looking to stop your pimple from oozing after removing the white pus, this is the ideal product since it’s breathable to improve healing, and it doesn’t come off very easily. It works best on popped pimples though but that doesn’t mean it won’t work on headless ones! You’ll probably need a lot more of these patches to subside that huge painful one.

Since it can be quite costly in the long run, I’d usually wait for the $9.90 packs (includes 2 boxes of 36) to be stocked up in Watsons/Guardians so that I can sweep the shelves LOL. That’d probably last me for about 3-4 months. Alternatively, if you’re always travelling, you can buy this at a cheaper rate (but different packaging) from the Watsons there.

4. My Beauty Diary Aloe Sheet Masks (我的美丽日记)

My Beauty Diary Aloe Masks

Image from bonboncosmetics.com // Retails at about S$15 in stores but you can get it S$3-4 cheaper online OR if you’re in Taiwan, you can buy one box for just S$9! One box contains 10 pieces.

I chose this because aloe vera is known for reducing acne and scarring. It does reduce my acne quite a bit but only when used about 4-5 times a week. I used to leave it on my face overnight but I kinda hated the wetness around my jaw and neck so I now take it off after 20 minutes or so. It leaves your face refreshed and rejuvenated like any other masks!

Psst.. I recently lugged home 9 boxes of this from Taiwan HAHAHA! #crazy

5. The Body Shop Aloe Gentle Facial Wash

TBS Aloe Gentle Facial Wash

Image from thebodyshop.com.hk // Retails at about S$20-ish in local TBS stores.

Another aloe vera product! This is my current facial wash which I’ve been using for 3 years already. It doesn’t really contribute much to preventing acne but it’s kinda scentless and somehow light on your face? I don’t really like how some acne facial wash have this strong medicated smell and it feels so heavy on your face, if you get what I mean. Bleargh.

6. Clarisonic Mia Cleanser

Clarisonic Mia Cleanser

Image from miaclarisonic5.com // Retails at about S$168 in local Sephora stores

Last but not least, the very expensive cleanser from Sephora! This was a birthday gift from the boyfriend (I casually said that I wanted it and the silly boy took it to the counter) and I use it to cleanse my face after removing my make-up. Sometimes I feel that there’s still some underlying dirt/make-up in my pores even after cleaning my face with a wet towel or with wet wipes and this could potentially form pimples. After using Clarisonic, my face feels cleaner and “empty”! I usually use this before applying my Acnes lotion and gel.

That’s about it 😀

Some recent pictures of me with no make-up to erase those disgusting images of me from above in your mind before I end this post:

Carousell Beauty Haul 2013

HELLO AGAIN fellow shopaholics as well as beauty addicts! Hopefully my increased blog posting frequency is able to make up for the lack of updates during my school term. It’s quite sad to know that I’ve only published 49 posts despite being on WordPress for more than 3 years already.

Anyway that’s beside the point! I’ve been really eager to share what I have bought on Carousell ever since penning my review on that awesome app. I have spent way too much that Boyfriend has to monitor my Carousell usage lol. I seldom buy from Sephora now because you can snatch up brand new (or barely used) products at more than half the retail price. So far I’ve been really lucky to see stuff I wanted to buy from Sephora appearing on Carousell. You’re also able to haggle the price down if the seller allows so can you imagine how much money I’ve saved by Carousell shopping instead?

As it is another form of online shopping, there are risks involved in buying cosmetics through Carousell such as receiving counterfeits (even though seller claims otherwise), expired products and the uncertainty of the actual product condition because you’re unable to touch nor see it before purchasing. Real-life pictures can also be deceiving at times. I once bought a MAC foundation and was planning to use it after I was done with my Benefit Hello Flawless!. I’ve heard good reviews about the MAC foundation and was thrilled to find someone selling a barely used/brand new one for $15. I met the seller, inspected the bottle and found nothing amiss about it. As it was bought as a backup, I didn’t try/swatch it until one day when I decided to use it. When I saw it again, I was shocked to see a layer of translucent liquid lying on top of the foundation. It seemed like water. I shook the bottle and pumped once on my hand. I could feel that the foundation was so runny/diluted that it could hardly stay on my hand. I deduce that the seller added water to it and passed it off as new to me but I couldn’t do anything about it since I had only realised this after several weeks.

Other than that, my Carousell experience has been nothing short of awesome and all the setbacks obviously didn’t deter me from buying more (I’m like a make-up collector now LOL). If you ask me, I think Carousell is much safer than eBay.

Here are some of my hauls that I felt were worth every penny I paid or otherwise, worth mentioning. These are all authentic ones (I have been to Sephora so many times that I think I’m already an expert in identifying fakes now) at very reasonable prices! All prices are in Singapore dollars unless otherwise stated.

Shu Uemura x Karl Lagerfeld Eyelash Curler

Shu Uemura x Karl Lagerfeld Eyelash Curler (S$10) – RP US$24

I’ve heard great things about Shu Uemura’s eyelash curlers so for the longest time, I was hunting it down on Carousell. I was so elated to see someone selling a brand new piece with refillable pads for $15 which I then bargained the price down to $10 because the seller wasn’t sure if it was authentic (it was a gift from her friend). I doubt there would be fakes for this though but I still took a gamble and bought it. Thereafter I took this to Shu Uemura JEM outlet for an authenticity check and true enough, this is genuine. Teehee!! This is the Karl Lagerfeld special edition version which works just like the original one. It’s really gooooood. It doesn’t pinch my eyelids like my old one because it’s designed for Asian eyes! The next eyelash curler I’d love to lay my hands on is the Anna Sui one which was used one me during an Anna Sui makeover a few months back (will blog about it soon) and I was very satisfied with the result. Oh and I’ve also the (gold) Shiseido one which works great too!

Benefit World Famous Neutrals

Benefit World Famous Neutrals (S$15) – RP S$48 / MAC Fluidline Eyeliner Gel (S$5) – RP US$16

2 of the earlier eye make-up I got from the app which I absolutely adore. You cannot deny that the Benefit WFN was a steal! Its original price on Carousell was $18 and the seller even agreed to lower the price to $15 upon my request. Honestly even if she didn’t allow further discounts, I’d still get it anyway! Furthermore, it was brand new and authentic! *gasp*

Benefit World Famous Neutrals

Benefit World Famous Neutrals shades

Totally untouched as you can see. The seller was so nice to even allow reservation for close to a month as I was unable to take time off my busy schedule to meet her. Sellers like her also keep me going back to the app 🙂

MAC Fluidline Eyeliner Gel

MAC Fluidline Eyeliner Gel

The eyeliner gel was already used (about 90% left) when I got it but I didn’t mind for its low price. I had been using retractable eyeliner but I didn’t really like it as it lacks flexibility (if you get what I mean) so I bought this to try. I’m loving it so far because it has the moistness I’m looking for. I’ve also tried Bobbi Brown’s which in my opinion is slightly better than the MAC one (see below).

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner Set

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner Set (S$30) – RP S$80+/US$59

This set comes with an applicator and 2 eyeliner shades – Sepia and Black. I use black for cat eye make-up and sepia for a more neutral look for school and work. I’ve never used the applicator though since I own an angled eyeliner brush but I trust it’s equally awesome too LOL.

Urban Decay Cannonball Mascara

Urban Decay Cannonball Mascara (S$22) – RP S$35

Urban Decay Cannonball Mascara

Close up of the wand

The best mascara I’ve used so far (I also have MAC Archie’s Girls Mascara which I got from the physical store) because it holds my lashes really well. It also adds enough volume to my lashes and this is very important to someone who doesn’t wear falsies at all lol. However one thing I don’t like about it is the massive fibre fallout after application which I read somewhere is due to it being waterproof (don’t ask me why). I also apply this on my lower lashes. Now, imagine my va-va voom eyes lolol.

Urban Decay Primer Potion

Full-sized Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion (S$8?!?!) – RP S$35+

ZOMG it’s only $8 and yes, I reiterate, it’s authentic AND brand new. It was also the fastest transaction ever: paid and received the product within 10 minutes after enquiring because seller lived in Dhoby Ghaut area and I was just nice at Dhoby Ghaut MRT station when I saw her listing HAHA. I haven’t tried it yet because I’m still using my Too Faced Eyeshadow Insurance. Just mentioning this product because of its unbelievable price!

Some eyeliners and a primer

Wet n Wild Color Icon Brow and Eyeliner pencil (S$3) – RP US$2 / Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eyeliner in Rockstar (S$10) – RP S$30 / Too Faced Shadow Insurance (S$9) – RP US$20

I find the Wet n Wild pencil too harsh as an eyeliner but alright for brows so I use it mainly to darken my brows (also because it feels scratchy when applied on my lids). Considering its price, it does its job fairly well.

The UD pencil is one of my favourites because of the nice colour (kinda like a mixture of purple and brown, perhaps deep purple?). It’s actually my very first UD 24/7 pencil and I am very satisfied with how buttery it is (makes application super easy but also smudges like crazy as a result) and how well it glides (thus its name) on my lids. However it doesn’t really work with my Too Faced shadow primer because it still smudges after awhile onto my lower lids so I will probably try using it with my UDPP next time. I use this occasionally as an eyeshadow by smudging it around my lids with an eyeshadow brush.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Pencil in Rockstar

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Pencil in Rockstar

I bought the Too Faced primer because I’ve read good reviews about it and my eye make-up tend to move around a lot on my oily lids. As its name suggests, it only works well with eyeshadow but not really with eyeliners. Still, I love it because it enhances the colours of my shadows and I’m still using the same tube after 10 months! The quantity is like never ending because all you need is a tiny amount every time.

Benefit Erase Paste

Benefit Erase Paste (S$18) – RP SG$42

Yup, it’s brand new 😛

Benefit Erase Paste

Benefit Erase Paste

I bought this concealer to “erase” my dark circles resulting from late nights. It also gives a brightening effect which helps to revive my dead eyes. I use this minimally though because I feel that without eye bags, my eyes appear smaller LOL. I only use this for the area around my eyes because it doesn’t get trapped in the fine lines below my lower lids.

It comes with a spatula but I don’t know how to use it so I apply with brush. On lazy days I use fingers. For your information, I’m using the medium shade (slightly lighter than my skin tone)

Urban Decay Book of Shadows IV

Urban Decay Book of Shadows IV (S$45) – RP S$95

Placed the UDPP there to compare the size. It’s really big (bigger than a usual palette la) because of the barang barang inside:

Urban Decay Book of Shadows IV

It has 16 shades of eyeshadow, a mini UDPP, eyeliner in Perversion, mini speaker and some pop-up butterflies near the mirror.

$45 for everything in there? Shut up and take my money!

Urban Decay Book of Shadows IV

Close up of the shadows, brand new as you can see.

I LOVE IT SO MUCH. It’s like my best buy on Carousell. The colours are also very pretty and pigmented and not too loud for my liking. If only I have more than a pair of eyes to use them all everyday!

Urban Decay Ammo Palette

Urban Decay Ammo Palette (S$40) – RP S$63

Urban Decay Ammo Palette

Urban Decay Ammo Palette

Not very pocket-friendly for such a small palette but you can’t deny that the packaging is really gorgeous and the shadow colours are also very feasible! This is the older version which comes with a dual-side applicator (the latest version comes with a brush instead). My go-to shades are Last Call, Mildew and Grifter. Last Call is my favourite here!!

Urban Decay Deluxe Shadow Box

Urban Decay Deluxe Shadow Box (S$12) – RP S$31

Urban Decay Deluxe Shadow Box

ALL THE PRETTY COLOURS

Another very affordable preloved (very lightly) palette which I bought just to test out the colours. Surprisingly, despite the price, the colours are very pigmented and VERY GORGEOUS. The colours look very 夸张 (exaggerated) here but trust me, they appear fine on the lids. In fact, you won’t go wrong with any Urban Decay shadows la. I’ve been using this palette almost everyday now and you’ll be surprised to see how versatile it is. As you can see, I’ve used most of Scratch and Underground already! *thumbs up* I use Honey (a very rich gold) on the inner corner of my eyes to perk them up a bit. Boyfriend commented they look like eye mucus though -_-

It came with 2 applicators but I threw them away because they kinda fell apart and I prefer using brush.

Stila Stirking in South Beach palette

Stila Striking in South Beach palette (S$10) – RP S$29

Stila Striking in South Beach palette

Comes with 4 eyeshadow colours, blusher and bronzer

Not my favourite buy from Carousell but the bronzer in this is worth a mention. I brought this palette with me to Batam in July for convenience sake and only used it once so far with my own brush (I got this brand new). The bronzer has a slight sheen to it and can also act as a highlighter. Its right amount of “darkness” (am I making any sense) helps to define my face effortlessly. The bronzer is so stunningly addictive that I almost overdid my face. HAHA

For newbies who are afraid of using bold colours, fret not. It comes with a mini tutorial below the mirror! Not very illustrative but it helps somehow. However I don’t really like this palette because it has too much blue :S So anyone who is interested to get this from me, please drop me comment!

Urban Decay Naked 1 and 2 palettes

Urban Decay Naked 1 and 2 palettes, both at S$65 each. They retail at S$80 in local Sephora stores

2 of Urban Decay most popular palettes, it needs no further introduction! The price isn’t something to wow about because brand new pieces range from $60-70 on Carousell. Anything lower than that are usually counterfeits.

I’ve used Naked 2 for a longer time because I got it earlier than Naked 1. I’m hitting pan soon! So proud of myself. Hahaha. However I have to say that Naked 1 has nicer shades 🙂

Psst, boyfriend got me Naked 3 too! I actually love it more than Naked 1 and 2 :O Will do a review if I have time.

Enough of eye make-up! Now let’s move on to the face!

(Yes I’m not done yet. My shopping must maintain)

The Body Shop travel brushes

The Body Shop travel brush set (S$12) – RP £13.50

The Body Shop travel brush set

Awww the brushes are so adorbs!

I applied my Stila make-up with these cute lil thang in Batam. I’ve used all of them except for the angled brush. The bristles are really soft and they don’t irritate my sensitive skin. Since they are travel-sized, they can be too small to use (if you get what I mean). Like you need twice the time needed to doll yourself up because the surface area of the brush is 2 times smaller than a regular-sized one lol.

Sleek Blush by 3 in Pink Sprint

Sleek Blush by 3 in Pink Sprint (S$15) – RP US$15.99 online

Sleek Blush by 3 in Pink Sprint

Sleek Blush by 3 in Pink Sprint

My first Sleek make-up! As it is very pigmented, I dare not apply too much on my cheeks in fear of looking like a Chinese opera singer but if you use it moderately, it should appear very nicely on your cheeks. I’d blend 2 shades on mine if I use this blush.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Blissful

Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Blissful (S$15) – RP S$42

Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Blissful

Close up of the blush

I use this blush on a daily basis because I absolutely love the shade on my cheeks. It gives me a natural flushed face with just one swipe! I got this before Tarte came to Singapore and I’m so shocked to find how expensive it is in Sephora now that it’s here! Even though I really love this product, I doubt I will get it from the store because I don’t think its small size is worth the hefty price.

Benefit Sugarbomb Blush

Benefit Sugarbomb Blush (S$18) – RP US$28, close to S$40 in Sephora if I am not wrong

Benefit Sugarbomb Blush

Comes with a mini blush brush

Benefit has many kinds of boxed blush and Sugarbomb is one that gives a very natural and subtle flush on your face. It think it would work better on people with fair skin because it doesn’t really show up on my cheeks (it still does a little but not the look I’m trying to achieve) T_T Plus, I’m getting tanner from all the morning jogs so I guess that’s masking the blush even more.

Bronzers

Sneak peak of the bronzers which I will be showing you guys!

Sleek Face Contour Kit

Sleek Face Contour Kit (S$10) – RP US$8.50 online without shipping

I bought this for its highlighter because I was searching high and low for one. It comes with a bronzer as well which I hardly use. The bronzer is not bad though but I find it too dark on my skin tone (maybe I applied too much, can’t remember). However it’s very compact hence very convenient to be brought around. I use this to contour my nose.

Smashbox Contour Kit

Smashbox Step-by-Step Contour Kit (S$25) – RP US$44.95 on Amazon

My favourite contour kit because the step-by-step instructions really helped me a lot when I was still new in contouring my face LOL. Plus I can really see the difference on my face and my features enhanced. I only use this on special occasions because I don’t want to appear to have too heavy a make-up on normal days.

Bobbi Brown Bronzer

Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder (S$30) – RP US$38 on Bobbibrowncosmetics.com

Bobbi Brown has one of the best bronzers rated by beauty sites and I have to agree! The one I have doesn’t appear very harsh on my face and it blends (doesn’t appear too blotchy) onto my skin tone while still giving that slimming effect.

NYC Smooth Skin Bronzing Face Powder

NYC Smooth Skin Bronzing Face Powder (S$10) –  RP US$2.79

It wasn’t a good deal since I got it for more than its retail price. However since it’s only available in the US, I shall pretend that I paid for shipping and handling too LOL. The packaging is a little outdated I must say.. It’s made of not-very-classy-looking plastic and it comes with this cheap looking powder puff O_O Like who uses that nowadays?! Anyway, I’ve never heard of this brand so I did a search on Google. It turns out that this bronzing powder is also highly raved by beauty bloggers. It is also rated very highly on makeupalley.com. Ditto. I really love this bronzer and I’ve been using this everyday as well since I received it! It’s almost gone now though 😀 If only they could improve on the packaging. 😛

Topshop Desert Sun Blush/Bronzer Duo

Topshop Desert Sun Blush/Bronzer Duo (S$6) – RP £12.50

I didn’t know Topshop carries cosmetics! But I feel that they should stick to selling apparels because their make-up don’t work.. for me at least. 😦 I appreciate shades which are less pigmented but this doesn’t show up on my face at all. I was so disappointed 😦 And I always felt that there was something missing on the packaging. There should be a mirror on the hollow space of the inside cover right?!

Concealers

Sneak peak of the concealers!

NARS Concealer

NARS Concealer in Honey (S$20) – RP S$40+

This is a liquid concealer which comes with a q-tip-like thing which makes it easier to apply on the face. I use this when I’m in a hurry. My first NARS product and I am very satisfied! But it’s a little too pricey 😦

Benefit Boi-ing Concealer

Benefit Boi-ing Concealer in Shade 03 Medium (S$18) – RP S$34

BEST CONCEALER. Hands down. Benefit really isn’t joking whey they claim that it’s industrial strength. It does cover any hideous discolouration or blemishes! I love this so damn much also because it’s the closest to my skin tone and I think it’s better than the NARS one above in terms of coverage. The price is reasonable too for a high-end concealer! I will definitely get one from Sephora once I empty this tub (already hitting pan too).

Benefit POREfessional

Benefit POREfessional (S$38) – RP S$48

One of my staple make-up and I’d feel super weird if I don’t use this before putting on foundation. It covers the pores on my face (I apply on my T-zone) and gives my skin a very smooth finish as a result. My mom loves it too!

Benefit High Beam

Benefit High Beam (S$18) – RP S$42

Another best buy from Carousell! High Beam is a highlighter which works better than the Sleek one above. It’s pretty strong though so just one short swipe on the nose bridge, cheek and brow bones is enough to give that brightening/slimming effect without overdoing it.

Foundation and primer

Foundation and primer: Sample-sized HELLO FLAWLESS Oxygen WOW in Honey and Champagne (S$9 each) / sample-sized Some-kind-a-gorgeous foundation in Medium (S$9) / sample-sized dr. feel Good face primer (S$4). Since all are sample sizes, I don’t have the retail prices.

I’m obsessed with the HELLO FLAWLESS (I’m just gonna stop here because it’s really a mouthful oh gosh. Why, Benefit?) foundation because it really gives me a flawless complexion. I used to think Champagne suits my skin tone but since I’ve become slightly tanner, Honey seems to work best for me now. They come in pump bottles to reduce wastage (yay!), so I usually pump twice on the back of my hand and dap it using my foundation brush all over my face!

Some-kind-a-gorgeous is a foundation faker which job is to even out skin tone, especially if you have blemishes. Actually I don’t see any difference between this and the HELLO FLAWLESS one though.

dr. feel Good is a complexion balm which helps to mattify shine. Works wonders on oily skin like mine. According to Benefit, it can be worn alone, below or on top of make-up. Being ever sceptical and cautious, I only wear it below make-up because I’m afraid it’d ruin my face if I wear it above. LOL. And yes it does help to control shine for up to 8 hours for me!

Once I’m done with the sample sizes, I will probably get the full-sized ones from Sephora 🙂

Some lippies to share:

MAC lipstick

MAC Lipstick in Quiet, Please (S$9) – RP US$18.50

I echo the reviews on makeupalley. It does have a very nice colour (which was why I bought it) but it is too sheer and has too much shimmers! So much so that the colour doesn’t really appear at all. 😦

MAC lipstick

MAC Sheen Supreme Lipstick in Happy Hibiscus (S$9) – RP US$14.99

This is in a very pale baby pink shade and is really hard to pull off. It looks very nice on Google images though. I think it’s very suitable for people with fair skin once again. I blend this with a deep red lippy to give a more pinkish lip colour.

Alright everyone, THESE are my Carousell purchases!! And that’s not all! I’m merely featuring those that are worth mentioning. HAHA I am so horrible! But these were purchased over a period of 5 months la so not too bad. 😛

I’m finally done writing this 3000-over-word entry!

Have a Merry Christmas everyone!!
