REVIEW: Daeng Gi Meo Ri Vitalizing Series (Shampoo + Scalp Nutrition Pack + Treatment + Nutrition Hair Pack)

Hello everyone!

How are you holding up with the circuit breaker (or lockdown, depending on where you are)? As a homebody, being cooped up at home never seemed like much of a big deal to me until I personally felt how warm and stuffy my living room (where I usually work from) would get in the afternoon for the first time since moving here – even with two pretty solid desk fans blowing in my face.

And one thing leads to another. Apart from the occasional musty odour of my sweat and small pustules popping out more frequently on my face, I also noticed an increase in my hair fall which, quite frankly, isn’t an entirely new to me. Normally when that happens, I would immediately book an appointment with my hairstylist to get my locks snipped. But with non-essential businesses being told to close during this period, this option is temporarily unavailable 🤦🏻‍♀️The absence of professional help meant that I could only rely on over-the-counter hair products to slow down my balding process until the economy reopens. For that, I’m thankful that Daeng Gi Meo Ri (댕기머리) had come to the rescue because picking the right products for my sensitive scalp would be a whole new issue in itself!

Daeng Gi Meo Ri

Daeng Gi Meo Ri

New to the brand? You’re not alone! Through some digging, I managed to find out a bit more about Daeng Gi Meo Ri. Based on unofficial reports, it has actually been around in the Singapore hair care market since 2014 and had even bagged some awards. I must been living under a rock!

Established in 1998, Daeng Gi Meo Ri is the first hair care brand in South Korea to incorporate traditional oriental herbal ingredients in their formula designed to maximise hair health through beneficial medicinal herbs extracted with traditional Korean fermentation process. It comes with specific ranges (Vitalizing, Energizing and Yellow Blossom) to cater to different scalp needs and conditions. In my case, I was recommended the Vitalizing range by its rep for its hair-loss prevention and hair growth capabilities.

By the way, Daeng Gi Meo Ri doesn’t gender-discriminate. It works well for the guys too 😉

Vitalizing Shampoo

Their number-one selling shampoo (the last time I checked, it’s sold out on Watsons!) helps in cleansing the scalp and preventing hair tangles with moisture supply, which may in turn improve your hair condition in 3 to 6 months. I mean, just by the smell of it, you’d know it’s not some gimmicky shampoo that banks on the power of scent (looking at you, P&G brands). It has a very noticeable herbal smell (somewhat like a more pleasant version of luo han guo combined with chrysanthemum) which fortunately doesn’t mess with my nose.

Expected more lather than this, to be honest! But it was more foamy at subsequent washes somehow!

Expected more lather than this, to be honest! But it was more foamy at subsequent washes somehow!

The appearance of the product funnily reminds me of malt extract as it has an incredibly thick consistency. Just one wash and I was already able to feel the cleanliness of my scalp which normally felt oily (and sticky?). There was also a vast difference in the texture of my hair. Can’t say I wasn’t impressed and surprised by the results at all! 😱

Vitalizing Treatment

Every shampoo has to have a conditioner accompaniment, so this is no exception. But rather than a conditioner, this is paired with a treatment (very common to see treatments in place of conditioners nowadays) which I presume is due to the incorporation of more potent ingredients that lead to more targeted results, rather than just giving hair the ultra-smooth effect. This scalp essence (as Daeng Gi Meo Ri calls it) claims to help in the prevention of hair loss by delivering medicinal herbal nutrition deep into the scalp to strengthen hair follicles.

Although it still has a herbal note to it, the treatment smells more inviting as compared to the shampoo, and it looks like a thick malted milk formulation (y’know, like Horlicks). This leaves my hair SO soft and silky smooth every time! 😍

Vitalizing Hair Cap

Missed going to professional hair salons to pamper your hair already? You cannot replicate that same experience at home but you can certainly achieve similar results with the help of this hair treatment cap. This easy-to-use self care for your hair contains additional fermented oriental herbal ingredients to supply nutrients to hair weakened from various elements (for instance, from chemical treatment including perms, dyes and stress from daily heat styling). Simply put, this is a more extravagant, one-time use version of the treatment for days you want to indulge in some serious TLC for your hair.

My experience in trying hair caps from other brands was nothing short of a nightmare. I remembered struggling to keep my waist-length hair each time inside the hair cap which wasn’t very well secured by the weakly adhesive tape. However, this was not the case for Daeng Gi Meo Ri’s which had even included another layer of wood pulp-like material inside the cap to hold my hair captive. The adhesive tape isn’t sticky to the touch but it somehow clings onto the cap like absolute magic (even after stripping it off to readjust the cap)!

It's a perfect wrap!

It’s a perfect wrap!

Once all my hair had been tucked into the cap, I massaged my head to ensure even distribution of the serum around my hair. Then, came a pleasant surprise – a cooling sensation started creeping in to reinvigorate my scalp! After about 15 minutes, I removed the cap and rinsed the serum off my hair. As I ran through my hair with my fingers, I could already feel its softness and smoothness (the same happened to my toilet floor – I almost slipped!). All in all, the product was a lot better than I had expected!

Vitalizing Scalp Nutrition Pack for Hair Loss

An over-the-counter tonic approved by the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, this scalp pack not only promises hair growth and the reduction of hair loss, it also helps to reduce scalp itchiness.

Clear, runny solution

Clear, runny solution

Imagine trying to resist the temptation to scratch your scalp because you don’t want to give the impression that you have head lice. Yup, that’s me on most sweltering days, and products I had tried in hopes of alleviating the itch had been largely unsuccessful. These past failed attempts naturally led me to cast a doubtful light on this clear, runny tonic (doesn’t help that it also kinda smells like mouthwash 🤣). But alas, I was wrong! (And I’ve never felt so happy to be proven wrong!)

It has been three days since using the tonic and the number of times my fingers reached for my scalp has visibly reduced. The cool weather might have a small part to play in this but my scalp has never felt this.. normal for a long time! Did I mention that this also gives a tingly sensation?

After cleansing the hair and blow-drying

For the record, the tonic is applied daily after cleansing my scalp (with shampoo and treatment, duh!) and blow-drying my hair to increase its efficacy.

The morning after using Daeng Gi Meo Ri for the first time! Hair looks less crazy!

The initial results of using these Daeng Gi Meo Ri products were beyond satisfactory as I do see an improvement in my hair quality (e.g. less frizz, slightly more volume and a lot easier to manage) especially when I wake up. However, it’s still too early to say if they are effective in promoting hair growth. The prices are also on the high side for some drugstore hair care products and this makes me very hesistant to dispense a full pump of shampoo and treatment at every wash (which may do more harm than good as more strain might be put on my scalp due to the lack of lather). But I guess you could always wait to snag them at a lower price during one of the many Watsons sales.

[SUSHI RESTAURANT] New Seasonal Menu @ Sushiro, Isetan Scotts

Move aside, Genki Sushi and Itacho Sushi for there is a new kid on the block!

After what seemed like an eternity, Japan’s largest conveyor belt sushi chain Sushiro has finally reached our shores, bestowing us with not one, not two but three outlets across the island in just a span of 6 months (with the newest one at Causeway Point) to satisfy our insatiable appetite for sushi!

Sushiro at Isetan Scotts

Sushiro at Isetan Scotts

What’s the difference, the uninitiated may ask, between Sushiro and the many existing kaiten sushi chains here that warrants your attention? For a start, Sushiro has an extensive menu. Having tried Sushiro at their Taipei branch last year, I knew very well that the newcomer to Singapore’s food scene wasn’t going to disappoint in terms of their offerings. Apart from the usual sushi staples, you can expect other ingenious sushi creations as well, such as sea urchin and roasted beef (yes, this is actually one dish – best of both worlds for people like me!), monkfish liver gunkan, baby scallop and dongpo pork, not forgetting outlet-exclusive ingredients (which I will be elaborating on shortly)! Their appetiser and dessert menu is nothing short of inventive and decadent as well, with items like cold chawanmushi, mango shaved ice and heavenly catalana that will ignite the fireworks of enjoyment in you.

As my companion and I already had our orders in mind (we had long craved for a number of Sushiro dishes so their inception in Singapore was extremely timely!), we jumped straight into adding them to our virtual cart on the tablet. Within minutes, our personal conveyor belt (which is a division from the main lane) would be jam-packed with our orders and we had to scramble to bring them down onto our table (we had clearly underestimated the preparation time and trust me, it got crazier towards the end when we couldn’t find space on the table for approaching orders). Talk about efficiency 😅 Lesson learnt; clear your plates before you place new orders!

Now, here’s a fun fact: did you know that every sushi plate has an IC (short for integrated circuit) tag integrated into it to ensure that any sushi that has travelled 350 metres around the conveyor belt would be replaced with fresh ones? As someone who tends to avoid picking up sushi on the conveyor belt (as you wouldn’t know what other patrons had done to them before they reached you..), this certainly gives me a peace of mind.

Without further ado, let’s get right down to the truckload of food we had at Sushiro (so that you won’t need to) and some of our honest opinions on a selected few. Be warned, though, that the abundance of food pictures coming your way may trigger your hunger pangs so if you’re reading this at night, S-T-A-Y A-W-A-Y(and come back later 🤣).

Cold Chawanmushi (S$3.50)

The cold chawanmushi was intriguing as it was something different from the norm. It had chunks of dashi stock that had been gelatinised to look like little pieces of precious gemstones that shimmered as the light bounced off the individual bits and pieces. Taste-wise, it was very similar to the hot version (I suppose the cold one would make a more refreshing alternative during sweltering days!) but I wouldn’t recommend this if you have sensitive teeth like me 😫

Mini Ramen, Sushi and Sashimi

Uni Ramen (S$8.50)

Uni Ramen (S$8.50)

The moment I saw this on the menu, I knew I had to get it because I absolutely love uni! I was rather impressed by the amount of uni (which is an expensive delicacy, if you didn’t know) served with such a small portion of noodles. The al dente te noodles were unfortunately clumped together which made it hard to eat. Furthermore, it would be a tad dry if not for the uni sauce. However, the dollop of uni compensated for all the shortfall.

And in case I wasn’t clear enough, the portion of the Uni Ramen is too small to be eaten as a main dish, but is definitely sufficient in satisfying your exquisite taste for uni! I totally wouldn’t mind returning just for this.

Salmon with Basil Cheese (S$2.20)

One of the crowd favourites, the salmon with basil cheese sushi is an east-meets-west fusion dish done right. The basil cheese added a different dimension and flavour profile to the sushi. The cheese might be a little too overwhelming to the extent that it kind of masked the taste of the fish, but it is still a unique dish that is worth trying nonetheless.

Roasted Beef ($4.80)

Roasted Beef ($4.80)

As for the roasted beef sushi (which makes an unusual choice of sushi ingredient), the sauce complemented the cut of beef rather well. The cut of beef was cooked evenly although it might be a little too well done and was chewy at certain parts. Even so, it was not difficult to chew and swallow. The texture was also pretty soft for a cut of beef that was cooked well. If you like sea urchin (uni), be sure to opt for sea urchin and roasted beef sushi instead!

Salmon Sashimi (S$4.80)

Desserts and Beverages

Warabimochi (S$3.80)

Warabimochi (S$3.80)

This paled in comparison to the real deal I had in Osaka last year as it did not give me that melt-in-your-mouth goodness I was anticipating. The texture felt more like that of a jelly – slightly rigid and rubbery. I say give this a miss unless you need some bitterness (from the matcha powder) to balance out the sweetness of other desserts that you are having.

Hattendo Shizuoka Matcha Pudding with Whipped Cream (S$4.30)

Hattendo Shizuoka Matcha Pudding with Whipped Cream (S$4.30)

Hattendo Coconut Pudding with Okinawa Brown Sugar (S$4.30)

Hattendo Coconut Pudding with Okinawa Brown Sugar (S$4.30)

Hattendo might have bade farewell to its patrons at Tanjong Pagar Centre following its store closure but its legacy remains. Sushiro has collaborated with Hattendo to continue to offer you its famous custard and chocolate cream buns, and matcha and coconut puddings! The coconut pudding had a satisfying crunch to it and the taste was rather close to chendol. However, we were slightly dismayed by the flat taste of the matcha one.

Mango Shaved Ice (S$6.50)

Mango Shaved Ice (S$6.50)

The mango shaved ice dessert lost out in terms of the richness of its mango flavour and sweetness although it can be argued as a healthier choice for people who are more conscious about their sugar intake. Texture-wise, the ice was shaved super thinly and was actually a joy to eat. This, combined with its not-so-sweet profile, meant that the dessert would be a hit among both young and old. The serving portion is huge too and can be shared between two or more people.

Crab Cream Croquette (S$3.50 for 2 pieces)

Crab Cream Croquette (S$3.50 for 2 pieces)

Chicken Karaage (S$4.80)

Chicken Karaage (S$4.80)

The chicken karaage, I would say, was a glorified version of har cheong gai – but I’m not complaining! Served piping hot, the batter was light and crispy and did not retain as much oil. It was so fragrant that I could actually smell it while on its way to me, and I just couldn’t resist having seconds! (And by seconds, I meant, like, repeated order 😛)

Catalana (S$3.50)

Catalana (S$3.50)

Catalana (S$3.50)

Catalana (S$3.50)

The catalana dessert was what I missed most about Sushiro during my stay in Taiwan. I even resorted to searching for the recipe online – that’s how much I loved it! Hence, when I got wind of Sushiro’s venture into Singapore, all that went through my mind was catalana… catalana… catalana… 🤤

Catalana (or Crema Catalana as the Spanish calls it) is very similar to the French crème brûlée, but is made from milk and then thickened with cornstarch and eggs. It consists of a rich custard base topped with a texturally contrasting layer of hardened caramelised sugar. I do not consider myself as one with a sweet tooth, but the catalana somehow managed to hit all the sweet spots!

Yuzu Juice (S$2.50)

Yuzu Juice (S$2.50)

Ah, yes, we were pretty amazed by the capacity of our stomachs as well. But it probably took me five trips to the gym to finally get rid of all the calories I gained that night. Still, stuffing my face with such great food from Sushiro was so worth it.

Despite the paranoia surrounding the virus outbreak, their Isetan Scott outlet was abuzz with diners lining up to secure a seat when I was there a few weeks ago and I am pretty sure the crowd hasn’t subsided yet (because there are only three outlets? And not a single one in the North-East region? How can?!). Hence, I thought it was very thoughtful of Sushiro to roll out a mobile application [Download: iOS / Android] for customers to make reservations for tables. The app also allows you to monitor your waiting time so that you won’t have to hang around the restaurant mindlessly when you could be doing something more meaningful (like shopping at Isetan Department Store? 😉) Oh, and don’t worry about table hoggers because there is a 60-minute dine-in period. This means you’ll definitely get a table within this time frame.

Traveloka, Your Handy Online Travel Agency

Hello everyone!

Travelling can be daunting for some people because of the amount of time and effort put into planning one single trip. I still remember the first time I set off on my first solo adventure. Granted, it was memorable, but the preparation process was tedious especially since it was my first time travelling alone to Seoul. I had to pore over tens of thousands of reviews just to ensure that my time and money would be well-spent in a country which I had never been to.

Who knew planning something that's supposed to be enjoyable could be SO STRESSFUL?

Who knew planning something that’s supposed to be enjoyable could be SO STRESSFUL?

There is certainly a lot to consider when going on a holiday. Furthermore, my hectic schedule and me feeling perpetually lethargic after work usually meant that I would always end up having a half-baked itinerary and paying more for any tickets, no thanks to my procrastination. Hence, the temptation to simply walk into a brick-and-mortar travel agency to book a tour package (and have my itinerary be at their mercy *sighs at the thought of having to wake up at 7am every day during my supposedly holiday*) has always been strong within me.

But nowadays, plenty of online all-in-one travel agencies have been sprouting out everywhere to assist us with planning a smooth trip. Since the emergence of such sites, a great deal of my time has been saved. Rather than visiting each and every airline website and blogs (and seriously, comprehensive blog reviews about anything are a rare find these days..) to compare and verify prices, almost everything that requires payment or reservation in advance can now be done altogether at one place – at the lowest prices available at time of booking. One of such online travel agencies that have helped me heaps over the years is Traveloka.

Traveloka site interface

Traveloka site interface

Available in both desktop and mobile applications, Traveloka is an online travel company that works its magic remotely. They come out as the main platform to find cheap air tickets now or whenever when you feel like it. Initially only offering airline ticketing and hotel booking services, it has now evolved into a one-stop shop for all your travel necessities. That’s right – ALL. Sounds a little too ambitious, eh?

Like you, when I first received news about their new site (and app) features, I had my doubts so I did some snooping around. Indeed, buttons linking to different products ranging from flights, hotels, experience (basically attractions and fun activities you can find in your holiday destination), car rentals, airport transfers, villas and apartments are shown on the app and website. Gone will be the days when you have multiple tabs opened on your browser while planning your trip. You literally only need ONE app now to complete your itinerary, and this will take like what, 30 minutes tops? No wonder physical travel agencies are going out of business!

With Traveloka, you don't even need a physical map to plan your holiday..

With Traveloka, you don’t even need a physical map to plan your holiday..

But let’s not dwell too much on everything and focus on just the flight booking feature which is arguably the most important part of any trip planning. For me, my period of stay is determined by the availability of the lowest priced air tickets. $100 less for return flight tickets on 26 June as compared to the price of those on 21 June? That’s it – I’m vacationing for 5 more days! (And yes, I know it doesn’t make monetary sense as a whole – this is just excuse to extend my trip 😜). It is also an open secret that flight ticket prices fluctuate a lot so in order to clinch the best deal, you really need to possess blistering high level of determination.

Searching for flight tickets to Bangkok..

Searching for flight tickets to Bangkok..

Thankfully, with the Price Alert feature on Traveloka, getting flight tickets at the lowest price possible is now attainable. This convenient feature will help to keep track of the price of your preferred flight tickets over a specified period of time. Whenever the price changes, you will be alerted so you don’t have to keep checking back. First-world solution to a first-world problem 😜 And once you have decided to part with your money, it won’t take you more than 5 minutes to complete the transaction if you have saved all your passport and card details. To speed up the booking process, Traveloka also allows you to save the passport details of more than 1 passenger! Once payment is complete, the booking details will be instantly sent to your inbox.

Price Alert feature

Price Alert feature

Oh, my bad. 5 minutes is probably an underestimation for you will probably be too caught up in exploring the myriad of activities and services (such as airport transfer for some VIP treatment) recommended to you at your checkout page. For instance, just as I was about to exit the page to concentrate on filling my itinerary after purchasing my flight tickets from Singapore to Taipei, I was bombarded with suggestions varying from Taroko Gorge tour to Kenting Discovery Dive. Other recommendations include those that are hardly talked about on travel blogs so if unorthodox travels are your sort of thing, you may want to stick around the Xperience page for some ideas!

Xperience page

Xperience page

All in all, this all-in-one app/website certainly walks the talk in my opinion – it’s convenient, efficient and cost-effective. Since my experience with them has been rather pleasant thus far, I can’t comment much on their customer service. Hence, to play safe, you may want to start small and plan a small trip abroad with them.
