REVIEW: Hwajin Cosmetics Homme Terrior All-In-One & Dynamic BB Cream

Move over, ladies!

Getting dolled up is no longer restricted to females, rather it has already extended to men as well with the rise of metrosexuality around the world. This cultural trend, largely intensified by the growing popularity of Korean pop culture, sees an increase in heterosexual men investing more interest in their appearance, so much so that sales of men’s grooming products in Singapore (yes, I kid you not, it’s happening right here in Singapore) have soared over the past three years! Who would have known that our men would be so into eyebrow pencils and BB cushions? Wow, just wow. Maybe that explains why I’ve been seeing so many guys with enviable complexion on the streets lately – it’s the makeup! It definitely is! *sulks away in jealousy*

With more men turning to makeup to enhance their looks, it’s no surprise that cosmetics companies are tapping into this emerging market by offering beauty lines exclusively for men. Many of you may know South Korean beauty brands like Laneige and Etude House, but have you heard of Hwajin? No? Well, then you may want to consider adding it to your radar.

Having been in the cosmetics industry for 34 years, Hwajin has a vast array of beauty products for both men and women and has continuously been developing functional cosmetic products made from selective ingredients. Most recently, its men’s range Homme Terrior bagged the Superior Skin Care Brand award at the 2016 Beyond Beauty Awards in Shanghai for its international performance and potential leadership of the future of Asian beauty trend.

The star products that contributed to the brand’s victory are the All-In-One and Dynamic BB Cream which BNTNews had sent me for my review. Fitted in a high-quality and luxurious black textured box with a magnetic flip cover, the overall packaging is a clear indication of the brand’s opulence and splendour. Just one glance at it and you’d know that Homme Terrior is an upmarket beauty brand. The gorgeous design of the packaging makes this set an ideal gift for your vain male friend.

Homme Terrior All-In-One

Homme Terrior All-In-One (120g)

Homme Terrior All-In-One (120g)

Look how chic the packaging is! It is made of glass and feels just like Giorgio Armani cologne bottle. I just couldn’t bring myself to use it (not on myself, but my boyfriend who had the honour of being my *cough* model) even though this product isn’t intended for me. The moment I removed the cap, a sharp, manly yet pleasant citrusy fragrance escaped from the bottle and drifted around my nose. It smelled so goddamn good, you wouldn’t even need to apply any cologne on your neck. Hence, I would highly discourage those with sensitive or acne-prone skin from using it due to the possibility that it contains synthetic fragrance (it honestly smells too heavenly to be natural) which may aggravate your skin condition. But for the rest of you who are blessed with near-flawless complexion, I’m sure you’re gonna love this product!

Kick-off your morning beauty regimen with this all-in-one facial serum that not only moisturises your skin but also firms, nourishes and balances its oiliness and moisture levels. When shaving, the layer of lipids that governs the moisture in the facial tissues can be compromised (source), thereby causing dehydration to the skin. This product offers the needed nutrients and moisture to your disheveled or rough skin after wash and shave to ensure that it stays hydrated. It also protects the skin from irritation and inflammation, which may cause premature skin aging (i.e. wrinkles).

The nutrients are plant-derived compounds from resurrection plants, herbs, apricot kernels and others plant extracts to give the skin a fresh, cool and clean feeling while the humectant ingredients come from patented extract mixture from herbs and licorice.

Other major ingredients:

• Lemon extract: the rich vitamin C and citric acid exfoliates and cleanses the skin

• Bamboo extract: the antibacterial and antioxidant effect of the bamboo sap make the skin moist and healthy

• Herb extract: the mixture of extracts from rosemary, chamomile, green tea leaf, licorice, polygonum cuspidatum, centella asiatica and scutellaria

• Iceberg water: the ultrapure water collected from Newfoundland, Canada, is used for the softest and cleanest quality.

The fluidity of this colourless serum leans more towards the runny side, hence it can be easily spread all over the face. Using both hands to massage the serum into the skin, the face appears visibly smoother and calmer after the product has been fully absorbed.

The information pamphlet that came with these Homme Terrior products claims that this multi-functional BB cream can improve the skin tone with its natural and healthy colour while vitalising the skin at the same time. It is also purported to take care of any skin problems with just a single application of the BB cream. Sounds very ambitious but is it really?

The BB cream contains Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, or Botox-like Peptide, which is known to have a strong firming effect. It has the minimum side-effects of Botox but keeps its function at maximum level.  The small molecule of the peptide penetrates the skin more easily and directly increases the elasticity of the muscular tissues.

Homme Terrior Dynamic BB Cream

Homme Terrior Dynamic BB Cream

For a start, the shade of the BB cream seems a tad too pale for a typical Singaporean male’s skin tone which falls somewhere in the medium range (blame it on our tropical climite). It has an opaque coverage, hence it does leave an apparent veil of colour on the skin. I was unable to tell from the sea of Korean words on the back of the tube if there were other shades available. But judging from the English information that came with these press samples, it doesn’t seem like it. For a cosmetics company to create a one-size-fits-all product like BB cream is absolutely absurd, if that is really the case. The strange chemical smell the product emits is also a put-off for the user.

Petty faults aside, the BB cream does it job well in concealing skin imperfections such as large pores and acne pits. I was amazed by how effectively it can fill up those holes on the skin surface to give it a smoother appearance. If only it was in the right shade, though.

REVIEW: BEIGE Cosmetics Ampoule Glotint in How Coral

Hello everyone!

Korean beauty products have been all the rage since the early 2000s when the Hallyu wave took the world by storm with a succession of outstanding television series and idol groups. Despite noting that an increasing number of Korean beauty stores have been popping up at every corner of shopping malls in Singapore in recent years, I had never really jumped on the bandwagon and actively used any Korean makeup because the non-conformist in me forbade it. But lately they have grown so popular that it is becoming impossible to dodge their influence. You know what they say, if you can’t beat them, join them, right? So here I am, conforming to trends (albeit a very delayed one) and bringing you my first review on Korean makeup, starting from a lip product by BEIGE Cosmetics!

BEIGE Ampoule Glotint in #133 How Coral

BEIGE Ampoule Glotint in #133 How Coral

It is completely understandable if you haven’t heard of BEIGE Cosmetics, because I, too, did not until BNTnews sent me this press sample. Unlike huge brands like Laneige and Missha, BEIGE does not have any retail presence outside of South Korea (but they do have an Instagram handle catered to Singapore customers) and from what I know, they mostly operate out of their online store. It is a relatively new label owned by lifestyle brand CHUU which also runs a fashion line. Even so, BEIGE already has an impressive selection of products ranging from eye shadow palettes to foundation sticks. Check out their catalogue here!

Stored and delivered in a clear slider seal bag, the Ampoule Glotint combines the best of both worlds to give the lustre of lip gloss and the sheer stain of lip tint. It comes with a special triangular applicator to allow for a more precise and effortless application each time.

I don’t have any swatch comparisons to show as I hardly buy lip glosses or tints, but as you can see from the pictures above, the Glotint delivers an intense splash of oriental orange-red with fairly strong coverage – what you would not expect from your typical lip glosses. When applied only on the inner side of the lips, the lipstick bleeds (a little) nicely towards the outer edge to give a more natural looking colour. It applies thick and has a slight citrus smell which I could even detect with my mouth (wait, am I a snake or something).

The Glotint leaves a long-lasting watery sheen that doesn’t appear oily. It locks in moisture to nourish lips that are prone to drying and cracking, so the lips feel nothing but comfort throughout the wear. It a lot less sticky than gloss (still has the sticky sensation but not as much) and hence low adhesive power. Thus, the colour does not last through eating or drinking as it comes off very easily.

What do you think about this lip gloss and tint hybrid? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

Thanks for reading 🙂

Beige Ampoule Glotint is AVAILABLE on chuu for 17,900 won / US$22.

REVIEW: Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipsticks – Doll Parts, Androgyny, Hoe Hoe Hoe, Drug Lord & Mistletoe

Hello everyone!

Last Christmas was an exceptionally brutal period for my wallet because of all the sales going on that caused my credit cards to break out of hibernation. Jeffree Star Cosmetics, in particular, rolled out five limited-edition (and now permanent) liquid lipstick shades to get every beauty lover in the mood for the festive season. They are Drug Lord, Doll Parts, Androgyny, Hoe Hoe Hoe and Mistletoe, some of which are colours that I admittedly don’t have the courage to parade in public yet.

Topping it all off, these new lipsticks were sold as a holiday bundle for only US$75 (which is equivalent to a discount of US$15) despite the widespread attention they had garnered on social media even before they were released for sale! That’s quite a substantial amount of moolah when converted to Singapore currency if you ask me, and it is precisely their generosity (and willingness to listen to their customers) that compelled me to support the brand. As might be expected, the lipsticks were sold out in minutes, thereby prompting Jeffree Star to do a restock and make the more popular shades permanent!

Deviating from its regular pink packaging, these liquid lipsticks came in white tubes and boxes that scream exclusivity. I actually prefer this design because it looks more sophisticated and original, unlike the regular packaging (the use of stars and silver holographic effect and the hot pink especially) which reminds me so much of that of Lime Crime. But of course, in terms of the quality of materials used for the packaging, Jeffree Star’s doesn’t feel like it would crack and shatter into pieces if you accidentally drop it.

Making a comeback this month is Doll Parts, a muted fuchsia with blue undertones that instantly transform a tomboy into a girly girl. It has a fairly runny consistency which makes it all the more easy to blend. With a single application, it was able to fill my lips with an opaque and well-pigmented layer of lipstick. Unlike some liquid lipsticks I have, this does not wrinkle the lips and cause them to stiffen or move awkwardly. I generally do not have any complaints about their formula and Doll Parts certainly did not disappoint!

I don’t really go for light pink hues when it comes to purchasing liquid lipsticks because of my relatively tanner complexion, so the closest (but far from similar) shade I have to Doll Parts is Bad Habit by ColourPop.

#2 Androgyny

Dusty mauves have become one of the most highly sought-after lipstick shades ever since Kylie Jenner started wearing it at public events about two years ago. As a neutral hue, Androgyny makes a safe choice for an everyday lipstick shade because it doesn’t blatantly shout for attention. It applies smoothly and evenly with a lightweight texture but settles slightly into the lip lines. It dries down to an opaque and non-drying matte finish quickly and was able to conceal the scab on my lower lip entirely.

However, this is one shade that you cannot rely solely on swatches to get a good idea of its true colour. While it seems to have redder undertones when swatched on my hand, it tends to pull purple on my lips which has a warmer tone. I was rather upset with the huge disparity because I really liked the colour on my hand. So Asian readers, do take note before you make your purchase!

Stingraye from ColourPop is lighter and has browner undertones as compared to Androgyny.

I don’t need another red lipstick but I just couldn’t resist those gorgeously subtle purple shimmers. Hoe Hoe Hoe lends the lips a fuller appearance with a provocative sheen, thereby upping the pout game. Unfortunately, it accentuates fine lines on the lips and feels a tad drier than the other Velour Liquid Lipsticks. The finish isn’t as densely pigmented as I like it to be but has a thicker consistency which may be why the applicator wasn’t able to collect a lot of product from the tube each time. Despite the alluring colour, this shade is probably the worst performer in the bundle.

Dance With Me by MAC is the dupe for Hoe Hoe Hoe! But if I had to choose between Hoe Hoe Hoe and Dance With Me, I would opt for the former. Apart from price difference, there are many other reasons for my choice and they will be revealed in my upcoming review on MAC’s Retro Matte Liquid Lipsticks so keep your eyes peeled to this space!

#4 Drug Lord

The first of its kind, this sold-out multi-purpose shade can be used as a lightening agent to create ombre lips, as a liquid eyeliner or even worn as it is. But unless you want to look like a drug addict who has probably forgotten to wipe large remnants of heroin off the lips after use of the drug, or a clueless child who has mistakenly used correction fluid on her lips, use Drug Lord only as a base colour, please.

When worn by itself, it appears messy and requires several applications to completely conceal the natural lip colour. It forms clumps at the doe foot, thus making it hard to line the lips. On top of that, because it’s white, the applicator gets dirty very easily!

#5 Mistletoe

What’s Christmas without red… and green? This aptly-named shade (although Grinch would be more appropriate) is a unique colour in my stash (so no swatches to compare with, sorry!). It has a slightly runnier formula and therefore was able to distribute evenly across the lips without too much difficulty. It applies smoothly on the lips but has a fairly opaque coverage because streaks of my natural lip colour could still be seen. You would hence need more than one swipe (the formula is buildable) to entirely obscure the lips.

I’m very late to review these lipsticks so Mistletoe and Hoe Hoe Hoe have already been taken down from the catalogue on Jeffree Star Cosmetics website. But who knows, it may just make a comeback this Christmas!

All in all, this bundle is only worthwhile if you intend to use all of liquid lipsticks. Otherwise, just stick to the conventional shades like Androgyny, Doll Parts and Hoe Hoe Hoe because honestly, US$75 is still quite a lot of money!

What are your thoughts on the unusual colours like Drug Lord and Mistletoe? Would you wear them as they are or blend it with another shade to achieve another colour? I would love to hear from you so chime in below!

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more beauty reviews! 🙂
