REVIEW: NEXGEN Biosteel Spider Silk Protein Die Hard Hydrating Serum & Phantom Mask

ADVERTORIAL

Hey everyone!

It has been drilled into our heads since we were little children that preserved food is detrimental to our health. But do you know that preservatives are also existent in beauty products? Like food preservatives, they allow extend the shelf life of the products by allowing them to remain fresh during the long span between the time of manufacture and the time the customer finishes using it. Similarly, they are often unhealthy as they may pose long-term health risks. However, preservatives form an integral part of the cosmetics ingredients. Without them, you’d most likely be tossing out your barely-used lipstick and facial cream every other few weeks.

Furthermore, it’s perfectly legal to use these toxic materials despite the fact that they may cause adverse effects to the health. Therefore, don’t be alarmed to see them on the list of ingredients of your everyday beauty products. They are everywhere.

On the other hand, there are still cosmetics brands around that tout to be completely free of preservatives and specially formulated to be self-preserving. But the problem lies with the fact that they are often reusable. Reusable cosmetics products which are free of preservatives usually can’t withstand the test of time (hence the shorter expiry dates) because they get contaminated very easily with repeated contact with the skin. That’s why most of such products are sold in small packaging, but at premium prices. With that said, are you getting more bang for your bucks, or not?

But not all hope is lost! With the advancement of technology today, nothing is impossible. In the case of NEXGEN, instead of using preservatives, their products are packed separately before undergoing a sterilizing process, all while ensuring that the composition and functions of the products are not altered.

skinthenext

Established in 1999 in South Korea, NEXGEN is a biotechnology company specialising in second generation (hence the name) plant biotechnology which does not involve the use of herbicide, pesticides and genetically modified plants. Diversifying from the medical, agricultural and industrial business, NEXGEN started venturing into the cosmetics industry in 2011 under the subsidiary name of SKIN THE NEXT.

What sets SKIN THE NEXT/NEXGEN apart from other cosmetics brands is that it makes beauty products that are perfectly sterile and as mentioned earlier, preservative-free because of the individual and disposable packaging. On top of that, it also bans the use of plant extracts.

“Wait, aren’t plant extracts supposed to be good?”

Not many people know this (neither did I!) but besides the active ingredients in plants which are highly effective and pure with high biological value [1], they also contain synthetic substances which can be really harmful to humans. In order to extract the beneficial ingredients, companies have to pay a truckload of money and go through a dreadful process. Realistically speaking, not many commercial enterprises would do it.

Therefore, instead of using these unknown substances, SKIN THE NEXT incorporates Growth Factor Protein (a protein almost identical to human DNA and found in vegetables and fruits) into their products to help stimulate human tissues to repair themselves. Another active ingredient is the Cellular Vital Complex which contains 21 essential amino acids and 14 minerals in an optimum proportion to nourish your skin.

Here are 2 beauty products recently launched by SKIN THE NEXT/NEXGEN.

Die hard® is a moisturizing repair serum that doubles as a wrinkle treatment. It is composed with genetically engineered growth factor protein named Spider Silk Protein, which is 18 times stronger than steel that replaces collagen and elastin to improve skin elasticity and triggers cell  division.

As a moisturizing and anti-aging product, it contains vital complex (21 kinds of essential amino acids, and 11 kinds of minerals), sH-Oligopeptide-1 (EGF) 10ppm and Spider Silk Protein. There are 60 sachets in each box.

There is a perforated line on the individual packaging to facilitate the opening.

You just need one sachet for every application. Apply the serum evenly onto the face and smooth it gently until it is completely absorbed into the skin. I use this only at night before heading to bed because it does leave a mildly sticky residue on my skin. The amount of serum in the pouch may look insufficient but trust me, it’s more than enough to cover the entire face because it has a flowy consistency. It’s colourless and formulated without fragrance but it doesn’t have a pungent chemical smell.

Effectiveness-wise, my skin did feel a lot more moisturised, supple and revitalised the following day. Most importantly, it didn’t break my skin out one bit. In fact, I’m not sure if it’s pure coincidence but I noticed some of my acne scars lightened up a little. Nevertheless, the product worked well enough for me to continue using it.

I also love the travel-friendly size of the individual packaging and how two sachets are adhered together to save even more space. It will definitely come in handy for me when I go abroad at the end of the year!

Like the hydrating serum, one of the key ingredients of the Phantom Mask is spider silk protein. Phantom Mask is suitable for sensitive skin and it helps to replenish moisture and add glow to the skin. It is separated into 3 sections for the upper and lower half of the face as well as the neck area. There are 8 sheets in each box.

If you like truffle oil, you’d love this mask because it smells almost like it. But if you don’t, you’d probably find the smell unpleasant. It didn’t quite bother me because I fell asleep soon after I went to bed with it. This mask gave me a sense of luxury, the feeling I had when I was in the esthetician room a few weeks back. The moisture of the mask on my face coupled with the cool breeze from my air conditioner just spelled bliss. Plus, I had actually refrigerated my mask before application. It felt so, so good and relaxing! My worn out face looked evidently lifted, tighter and calmer (inflammation of pimples greatly reduced) when I peeled off the mask and I also realised my skin tone becoming a teeny weeny bit more even.

And the best part? The aftermath feeling wasn’t as tacky as I thought. Just smack on some sunblock and you’re ready to leave the house! (No I’m not kidding because I really did go to Orchard after one of the sessions).

The mask is made of great quality cotton sheet to prevent clumsy people like me from tearing it accidentally while trying to separate the sections. There would also be plenty of remaining essence left in the packaging which you can massage onto other areas of the neck, or wherever you deem fit. This is what I call “stretching your dollar” 😀

What do you think of these products? Would you be more wary when purchasing your beauty products now? Let me know in the comments below!

#NoFilterSkin Made Possible By GLOMAX Aesthetics

MEDIA INVITE

Hey everyone!

You know, every time I receive compliments on my skin from readers who have been following my lipstick reviews, I can’t help but feel a pang of guilt because in reality, my skin is nowhere near flawless. Beneath the layers of foundation and concealer you see on pictures is a face blemished with zits and scars of adolescence which I’m always too ashamed to reveal.

I used to enjoy enviable radiant skin until cystic acne starting emerging when I was 15, and my complexion went downhill from there. I didn’t know what triggered the acne but I knew, for one, that my body was going through a major metamorphosis. My face turned pimply and along the way I also gained a truckload of weight, making me the subject of taunts from school hooligans whom I stood up to.  My confidence level plunged to a new low although I never really showed it. I guess if not for my strong willpower I would have probably ended up depressed or suicidal.

pimple_popping

Hey, look! It’s the stock image girl (source)

I had tried all possible ways (minus seeing the dermatologist, as being a secondary school student I had no money for that) to treat my face but not only did they not work, my skin became drier, thinner and more sensitive. I remember going to school once with a swollen and blistered face caused by my allergic reaction to Benzoyl Peroxide.

Although my skin now seems to have cleared up a little with occasional breakout here or there, the traumatising experiences I went through during my teens had certainly made me apprehensive about anything that has to come in contact with my face. That’s why, for the longest time, I refused to get a facial. I mean, really, who wouldn’t be? Just look at all the horrific post-facial experience shared by so many people online (a notable one here)! You not scared I scared leh!

So when boyfriend surprised me with a facial treat (my first ever) 2 years back, I berated him (poor guy). Still, not wanting to let his money go to waste, I obliged, kept my fingers crossed and went ahead with his plan. The experience, however, reaffirmed my stance of facials. It was mostly agonising (especially extraction, quite the norm actually) and the session left me with a cluster of aggravated red bumps on my face which took forever to subside. And to top it off, I had to endure the hard-sell for 15 minutes (could’ve been longer if I didn’t cut her off) thereafter! Argh.

Staying away from beauty parlours, I continued to do my own facial at home using conventional facial masks, and popped my own pimples in front of the mirror (yesssss, I know it’s a terrible habit). It didn’t improved my skin condition nor did it worsen it. But I had no complaints because I’ve kinda resigned to my fate of never getting back my clear skin. Then, one day, I received an invitation from GLOMAX Aesthetics to try out their facial treatment.

To go or not to go?

By then, my first awful facial experience had more or less become a distant memory. Nonetheless, part of me was still quite wary of what could possibly happen to my face after the session (with the aforementioned beauty blogger’s facial ordeal still etched in my mind). But with boyfriend’s encouragement, I eventually took up the offer, albeit with a lower expectation.

GLOMAX Aesthetics

Although conveniently located next to Clarke Quay MRT station, GLOMAX Aesthetics isn’t accessible by everybody. I had to “make known” my presence using the intercom on the first level before taking the lift up. The parlour itself is nestled among many office-like rooms on the sixth level and it has a small interior with no more than 3 treatment rooms.

GLOMAX boasts a superlative collection of award-winning ultimate face and body treatments. Their treatments are specially crafted for instantaneous results and meticulously executed by a team of highly-trained beauty masters with over 8 years of experience in the beauty industry.

Analysing my skin

Analysing my skin

Upon entering, I was ushered to a table to fill out a health-screening questionnaire-cum-declaration form. My skin was then analysed by Evon (one of the beauticians there) and diagnosed as the typical acne-prone skin (as expected) – dry on the surface but oily underneath. For this reason, I was recommended the 60-minute Intensive Acne Medic Treatment (which bagged the Simply Her Best Anti Acne Facial Award 2014). Click here for a list of facial treatments offered by GLOMAX.

And here comes the most excruciating part of the facial treatment:

Manual extraction

Manual extraction to remove dead skin cells

Besides preventing me from witnessing the dreadful procedure, I believe the cotton square puffs were there to soak up my tears because my eyes were literally tearing from pain. I had always thought the purpose of extraction was to pop my visible pimples so I was a little baffled when that step took so darn long (when in actual fact, was less than 5 minutes la because the esthetician moved from one area to another very quickly)! I didn’t remember seeing a lot of pimples on the mirror before I left my house!

SO PAINFUL!!!

Even when I pop my zits on a regular basis! (bad habit, please don’t learn)

Although I could have alert my esthetician about my discomfort (and she would adjust her techniques to my level of comfort), I chose to endure the agony because I somehow knew it would be beneficial to my skin that way. I later found out that extraction helps to draw out all the accumulated dead skin cells in the pores! You can watch some examples here and here. It’s actually quite gratifying seeing those nasty stuff underneath your skin gets taken out. After this step, my skin felt a lot cleaner and “emptied”.

My eyes were shielded from the sudden beam of light with a goggle-like protective gear (pictured below). Every application would leave a warming sensation that went away within seconds. If I’m not mistaken, this also helps to remove some facial hair which could have trapped sebum, bacteria and dead cells in its follicle, thus causing a pimple to form.

The aftermath

Probably due to my unhealthy diet (ate Samyang spicy Korean noodles that night oh goodness gracious me), pimples still formed from time to time but they were mostly small, pus-filled ones that healed speedily. My old zits had also disappeared and for the first time in years, my face was near-spotless (like 85% thereabout) during my menstrual cycle in August!

Skinrecipe.sg, Your One-Stop Skin Care Specialty Webstore

ADVERTORIAL

Hey everyone!

When it comes to looking good, I believe most Singapore women (who are interestingly the biggest beauty spenders in the region) would have no qualms about splurging on expensive beauty products that promise a flawless complexion or an enhanced appearance. Further supporting this statement, a poll conducted three years ago by market research company Frost & Sullivan had also revealed that Singapore women were increasingly willing to blow their fortunes on products that were considered a luxury. Why? I guess that’s because we often associate a higher price with higher quality, therefore higher effectiveness, and the opposite with a lower price.

However, that’s not always true. I mean, sure, there must be something special in luxury products that justifies the cost but not everything is a one-size-fits-all affair. I’ve had my fair share of disappointing experiences with higher-range cosmetic brands (especially acne-fighting products) and likewise, there are low to mid-range brands which I absolutely rave about.

skinrecipe-logo

Hence, with this in mind, two sisters launched Skin Recipe on 1 July 2015 after discovering some really affordable yet effective ones on one of their weekend getaways.

Represented by a tomato to reflect meaning of healthy young looking skin, Skin Recipe offers a wide selection of pocket-friendly skin and body care products that are not readily available in Singapore, handpicked by the owners themselves.

Quality Assured

Unlike other webstores that sells products deemed to be popular by the general public, Skin Recipe only offers products which they think will be beneficial to your skin! Apart from that, all products are personally tried and tested before they go on sale to ensure their effectiveness (especially on sensitive skin) and quality. They are also guaranteed authentic as they are sourced directly from local authorised distributors.

Product Range

With popular brands like Malissa KissNamu Life (e.g. the widely-acclaimed SnailWhite Cream by renowned bloggers like Tammy Tay and Yutaki) and PasJel from Thailand, and Elishacoy, Hey Nature and Nature Republic from South Korea on the catalogue, Singapore shoppers are promised an array of foreign skincare fixes which previously can only be bought overseas!

P/S: There’s a sale going on now so be quick with your fingers!

As the webstore is still pretty new (less than 2 months old as of writing), it does not boast as much as others have to offer but you can expect more skin care products such as masks, lip care, eye care and other body and face related items to be listed soon!

Payment & Delivery

Local mailing charges apply but free registered mailing is provided for any orders above S$80! All prices shown are in Singapore dollars (S$).

Not in Singapore? Fret not! Skin Recipe also ships worldwide via Speedpost. Payment can also be made with credit card or via PayPal so that customers can be provided with a secure, swift and fuss-free checkout experience. How awesome is that? 🙂

I don’t know about you but I have an inkling that Skin Recipe is going to be the next webstore I frequent to satisfy my beauty curiosity and I’m sure it will be yours too if you have been searching high and low for a trustworthy beauty shop to supply your beauty needs 🙂
