REVIEW: MAC x Mariah Carey Lipstick in All I Want

Hello everyone!

Did you know Mariah Carey once enrolled herself into a beauty school when she was in the eleventh grade because she wanted to try her hand at being a hairdresser and a make-up artist? That, however (and obviously), didn’t materialise as the Queen of R&B later revealed that she dropped out of the course due to her demanding schedule in the early days of her music career. But with all the fortune she has amassed as one of the most successful singers in the world now, she certainly doesn’t need any credentials to start her own cosmetics line!

Mariah-Carey-MAC

Every December without fail, the enchanting voice of Mariah Carey infiltrates shopping malls around the globe as everyone gears up for Christmas with familiar tunes like “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. Last year, the holiday icon (Queen of Christmas is also another honorific nickname bestowed upon Carey) decided to take her hit song to the next level by transforming it into a tangible product! Teaming up with MAC for the first time on a new lipstick (and an impending collection due out later this year), the music goddess stayed true to her penchant for nude lips but added an extra dose of festive sparkle to her aptly-named All I Want lipstick that was released in December 2015.

What let me down, of course, was the plain packaging adopted for this limited-edition lipstick. Being the first product borne out of the collaboration between Mariah Carey and MAC, surely we would have expected something more than just the regular black MAC box. I mean, look, even the relatively unknown Brooke Candy (no offence) got better treatment on the design of her lipstick packaging :\

Everything about this lipstick screams “celebration” – from the alluringly muted gold hue to the sparkly finish which altogether simulate the appearance of champagne. The shimmers stuck out for this one as light is clearly reflected at most parts of the lips. You don’t actually need to apply the lipstick multiple times to achieve this sparkly effect because all it takes is one swipe. You know how the colour of your lipstick can sometimes directly affect your mood? Well, wearing All I Want made me feel like I was wandering around a quiet street on a winter’s night because those shimmers made my lips look really frozen pale 😆

On the downside, it doesn’t have a smooth consistency as the texture felt a tad powdery on my lips. Still, it’s a very pretty lip colour to have to commemorate Christmas and what’s more, a shade that was put together by Mariah Carey herself! This lipstick is also perfect for parties, especially those dimly-lit ones. Those lips are guaranteed to stand out from amidst the darkness.

I’m not a fan of Frost finish to begin with, thus explaining the very limited number of shades I could compare All I Want with. But as you can see from the above swatches, the Frost finish is a more sparkly and gorgeous version of Lustre.

Boy, I can’t wait to see what awesome stuff Mariah Carey and MAC have in store for us this year! What about you? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below! 🙂

REVIEW: MAC x Ellie Goulding Lipsticks – Without Your Love & Only You

Hey everyone!

Just as everyone was speculating about a possible MAC collaboration with the newly-transitioned Caitlyn Jenner (which, by the way, has already been confirmed a while back), the cosmetics giant decided to drop a bomb on the beauty community by announcing the partnership with English singer and songwriter Ellie Goulding for a new holiday collection last December. Although I’m not really a fan of her music, I was genuinely stoked (as always, when it comes to celebrity beauty endorsements) for the launch and was already preparing to buy the lipsticks the moment I landed in Japan.

Ellie-Goulding-MAC-Cosmetics

Judging by the looks of the promotional photos, the colour theme of this collection is very obviously centered around shades of neutral which, according to the description provided by MAC, were inspired by the effortlessly au naturel look of the singer herself. I was half-expecting lustres in the lipstick line since they’ve been pretty much a common occurrence in limited edition collections. But as usual, MAC always has surprises up their sleeves.

My wallet heaved a huge sigh of relief when I learnt that there were only two lipsticks in this collection alongside two Plushglasses and two Patentpolish Lip Pencils and other products for the eyes and face – all of which encased in a sleek, mostly-black packaging bearing the official logo for Ellie Goulding like they were made for her merchandise. Look, even the products themselves have the logo debossed into them!

With product names like Only You and Without Your Love, sharp-eyed readers may have already noticed that the lipsticks were aptly named after the singer’s hits 🙂 At first glance, both shades reminded me of those from the Guo Pei collection in terms of their coral hues, sheerness and how they are virtually devoid of pigmentation, which is strange, considering that they have Cremesheen finish instead of the dreadful Lustre that Zenith and Ethereal Orchid have. In fact, I found that the lipsticks from the Guo Pei collection were a lot more pigmented than these two addition here.

#1 Without Your Love

In a case that further blurs the line between Cremesheen and Lustre finishes, this pale pink has a very creamy and sheer quality with a glossy texture. Its only characteristic that sets it apart from Lustre is its micro-shimmers that lends an emollient effect on the lips.

The product, however, has a tendency to cluster around areas of unevenness which I felt was a little difficult to blend out. Although Without Your Love (WYL) sits comfortably on my lips, it does almost nothing to enhance my natural lip colour (hence it will probably show better on really fair skin tones) and because of how lightweight and slippery it is, it lasted under two hours when I wore it out.

#2 Only You

Only You is a muted mid-toned coral with Cremesheen finish (US$18 / S$34)

The darker lipstick shade in this collection, Only You is in a sort of salmon colour that complements my warm skin tone. It glides on smoothly on the lips and has a thicker consistency with a more opaque finish as compared to WYL. The pearlised pigments are not as glistening too and hence seems less like a gloss unlike WYL. Although it does settle into the lip lines, it is only obvious upon closer examination.

Unless you’re an avid lipstick collector or an ardent Ellie Goulding fan, you don’t have to rush into buying these lipsticks because honestly, these shades are not new so there is a high chance you’d find cheaper alternatives in the permanent range or from other brands. But price-wise, US$18 is, no doubt, a steal for products created by a renowned celebrity like Ellie Goulding.

REVIEW: OFRA Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Miami Fever

Hello everyone!

Thank God for the internet. Not only does it enable consumers living outside of the United States to have access to brands not found in their country, but also introduces them to new or indie brands that would otherwise be confined within their own retail walls. One brand I had discovered of late is OFRA, an up-and-coming cosmetic brand that has got every makeup enthusiast talkin’ about their liquid lipsticks.

ofra-logo

Founded in the late nineties by Ofra Gaito – a therapist and make-up artist from South Africa – along with her husband David, OFRA has over 20 years of experience in the beauty industry so they are definitely worth a look. For a start, OFRA is among the few brands to have an in-house laboratory, thus allowing them to formulate and produce their own professional skincare and makeup products and oversee the entire manufacturing process.

Since breaking into the American market, they have partnered with numerous high-profile personalities and franchises including Miss Universe. Most recently, they also seemed to have taken a leaf out of ColourPop’s book and worked with social media influencers. This shift in marketing direction proved to be highly fruitful as their latest collaboration with famous beauty vlogger Kathleen Lights had attracted lots of buzz on Instagram (and maybe YouTube), so much so that even a social media dweeb like myself had taken notice of it. Although not as dirt cheap as ColourPop, their products are considerably more affordable than MAC and the likes (with discounts), but even so they boast of equally great quality. Therefore, unsurprisingly, many were very eager to lay their hands on the first liquid lipstick born out of this partnership (though I believe the choice of colour played a huge role in the hype as well). Within days of its launch, it was completely sold out, thereby prompting OFRA to do a restock that was never (based on their Instagram update 14 weeks ago) in the plan!

Being totally new to the brand, I wasn’t really keen on adding it to my stash at first but after seeing how popular Miami Fever was, I knew I had to! (Yes, yes, say all you want about me being a bandwagon jumper  )

OFRA Miami Fever

OFRA Miami Fever (US$19.90)

OFRA Miami Fever

My first venture into OFRA started off well as there was a discount code (which has already expired) for 40% off the entire website. Thus, instead of paying the full price of US$19.90+, I only had to fork out US$16.89 (inclusive of shipping fee). My order was processed and shipped out by the end of the following day but it took close to 7 days to arrive at my U.S. address. I wasn’t in a hurry to try it so I didn’t really mind the wait.

The lipstick is packed rather tightly in a slim paper box, but it could be easily removed by sliding it upwards along the rectangular cutout at the front. Don’t bother taking it out from the opening at the top because the box will tear if you do so.

Packaged in a relatively tiny bottle about twice the length of my pinky, it comes with an applicator which felt sturdier and slightly more slender than that of other liquid lipsticks I own. It was the perfect size because it allowed for a more precise and manageable application. Therefore, no lip liner is necessary.

When putting the applicator to my lips, a pronounced scent of vanilla (or something close, like a chocolate blend) unexpectedly hit my nose. It is a lot more potent than that of MAC lipsticks, so I would advise you to stay clear if you have a very sensitive nose. But apart from the smell, there’s truly nothing to dislike about this lipstick. Besides, it even contains antioxidants and Vitamin E for added benefit!

The liquid lipstick glides on smoothly and evenly in an opaque coat of vivid burnt orange with blue undertones in just one swipe. This shade is one of a kind; I don’t remember having anything similar. Contrary to the description on the website, it dries down almost instantly, leaving little to zero chance of smudging and feathering. It felt lightweight, therefore reducing any sign of flaking. It does not settle much into the lip lines (of course, exfoliating the lips prior to application would give better results but as usual, I’m lazy) and the flawless matte effect it provides reflects light to add a glow to your smile. Most importantly, it’s extremely long-wearing because it lasted almost 6 hours on me (with minimal drinking and eating)!

I can go on gushing about this product but you probably already get the gist. In short, this liquid lipstick is uh-mazing, right down to the finish. For this reason, I will certainly be looking forward to my next purchase with OFRA!

Compared with the liquid lipsticks from ColourPop, Miami Fever definitely looks more pigmented and hard-wearing. The subtle glaze over it also made it look less flat. You’re clearly paying for the quality here.

That’s all from me! What do you think of OFRA products? Do share with me your thoughts in the comments below!
