REVIEW: MAC x Philip Treacy Lipsticks – Cardinal, No Faux Pas & Hollywood Cerise

Hey ladies!

London’s leading couture hat designer Philip Treacy recently collaborated with MAC for a yet another Spring collection. If you don’t know who he is, well, basically this is the guy behind the creation of the craziest hats in existence. If you’re into English weddings (*cough* Wills and Kate), chances are you would have seen some of his works parading the red carpet. Some of the celebrities who have donned his hats are Kate Middleton herself, Victoria Beckham, Dita Von Teese, Alexander McQueen and Lady Gaga (remember her infamous lobster and telephone hats? Yes, those were designed by him). Judging from the creative direction of his works, it’s easy to tell that the collaboration is going to be somewhat bold, extraordinary and inspirational.

This collection consists of 3 Fluidline (in Blue Peep, Royal Wink & Blacktrack), 2 Pro Longwear Paint Pot (in Chrome Angel & Genuine Treasure), False Lashes Extreme Black, 3 lipsticks, 2 Highlight Powder (in Blush Pink & Nude Pink) and a 127 Split Fibre Face Brush

Overview

Unfortunately, the lipsticks were anything short of bold, extraordinary and inspirational and definitely do not reflect the creativity of the designer. I wasn’t particularly excited about the colours because they look really dupeable. Even without comparing them with my existing MAC lipsticks, I could already make out the closest MAC dupe for each shade. And by closest, I mean like 99% identical. I had my bets placed on Catharina (from the Ultimate Lipstick collection) for No Faux Pas and Flat Out Fabulous for Hollywood Cerise. I couldn’t determine the exact dupe for Cardinal because it’s such a common shade of red. I’m sure it has been used numerous times, just complete with different finish.

With preceding launches like Bao Bao Wan and Julia Petit (which products were sold out in a flash), this surely comes as a huge disappointment especially to hardcore M.A.C fanatics like myself who pretty much own most of the lipstick shades.

And even though there isn’t distinct (four) seasons in Singapore, I know very well how Spring feels like, and it definitely aren’t just reds and pinks. This collection is clearly lacking some yellows and greens.

Perhaps that’s why none of the lipsticks are sold out yet.

My only consolation, though, was the price. Each lipstick retailed for US$16 online despite it being a collaborated piece. But of course, they come in regular packaging too.

Let’s take a closer look at each shade and you’ll know what I mean… starting with Cardinal.

SAMSUNG CSC

Cardinal is a yellow burgundy red with Satin finish. (US$16)

Bad. Hair. Day.

I like that it’s very emollient (typical of Satin finish) and easy to apply. I had no problem lining my lips with the pointed tip of lipstick because it glided on really well. It has great coverage (can’t really see my unsightly lines!) with a luminous sheen and is intensely pigmented.

SAMSUNG CSC

Swatch comparison! P/S: Will be reviewing Maria Moretti in my next post 🙂

Now do you see where I’m coming from?!? These are just some examples. I could have compared it with the more reds in my stash but I reckon this is enough to justify my disappointment. I love the lipstick (the application, finish. etc.) and all, but the colour is just too repetitive, don’t you think? 😦

Moving on to No Faux Pas!

SAMSUNG CSC

No Faux Pas is a yellow hot pink with Matte finish. (US$16)

This shade was released last October as part of MAC’s Heirloom Mix collection. In other words, it’s a repromote. Pfft, where’s the creativity in this collaboration? Sometimes I wish MAC would focus on creating novel shades instead of churning out new collections with repeated products. But sigh, as a diehard MAC fan, it’s hard to resist buying something from new launches 😦

Anyway, this is the only Matte shade in this collection and as compared to other Mattes that were released recently, this feels relatively drier. My Mattes from Bao Bao Wan and Julia Petit collections, for example, were slightly creamier and more hydrating, almost akin to Satin finish. Hence, it’s likely that no improvements were made to the formula of No Faux Pas because it feels a lot like my older Mattes.

And finally, Hollywood Cerise!

SAMSUNG CSC

Hollywood Cerise is a magenta berry with Satin finish. (US$16)

My favourite from this collection, it is such a gorgeous colour with a beautiful sheen and great coverage. It’s probably the only shade from this collection that is arguably different from what I already have (because this seems darker now that I look at the pictures). And since it’s Satin, it’s not drying over time too. If you’re ever going to get anything from this collection, I’d definitely recommend this shade. 🙂

So… am I going to lose my bet? You decide.

SAMSUNG CSC

Ok maybe Flat Out Fabulous is 90% similar. I read that Girl About Town (something I don’t have *gasps* because I’m not really into bright purples) is a close dupe so maybe that’s why. But yes, Catharina = No Faux Pas. Period.

And yes, that’s about it! I may be harsh in this post but you know I still love you, MAC. Just try to stop with the repeats, pretty please? 😦

What say you, ladies? Do you agree with my review? Let me know in the comments below 🙂

Thanks for reading!

REVIEW: MAC x Bao Bao Wan Lipsticks – Lavender Jade, Forbidden Sunrise, Burmese Kiss & Romantic Breakdown

Hey ladies!

As promised, another MAC review within the day (technically it isn’t anymore as it’s past midnight here. But meh).

mac-cosmetics-bao-bao-wan-2015

Love the metallic brown theme

Before I begin, let’s have a show of hands: who has heard of Bao Bao Wan (or 万宝宝, literally means ten thousands of treasure in English. Destined to be filthy rich, I see 😮 ) prior to this launch? Unless you have a keen interest in fine jewelry or the mega-rich in China, you most probably wouldn’t have known of her existence.

But clearly when it comes to MAC collaborations, the limelight is not shone on the celebrity’s status but on the products that are released with the global cosmetics giant instead. People are more interested in what the collaboration has to offer. And through her Limited Edition MAC line, not only do we know that Bao Bao Wan is a “high-society darling, artist, pop philosopher, muse and jewellery designer” and also “one of China’s most renowned style stars”, we also noticed that Wan really looks like Dr Georgia Lee loves bright, close-to-neon colours. Just look at those lipsticks. Those shades are seriously to die for. *drools*

How gorgeous!

Even the names of the lipsticks sound more artsy fartsy than usual

This collection is awesome because out of the 4 lipsticks released, 3 are MATTE. Yipee!

Products from this collection are “outfitted in velvety brown packaging featuring burnished metal, embellished with her signature”. She must be really something to be able to do that. Even Lorde, who had a makeup line with MAC last year, didn’t have such privilege!

SAMSUNG CSC

Sleek packaging that exudes radiance charm and elegance

Fortunately, this collection isn’t as massive as Cinderella as it only has a Jewels Veluxe Pearlfusion Shadow, the 4 lipsticks featured here, 1 iridescent pressed powder and 3 studio nail lacquers (in Kashmir Blue, Imperial Green and Sunset Tourmaline). If I remember correctly, both Bao Bao Wan and Cinderella were originally slated to be released on the same day (crazy, I know) but somehow plans got changed and this launch was postponed to early March. On behalf of thousands of poor makeup fanatics, thank you for being kind to our wallets, MAC. *teary eyed*

The lipsticks, being so vibrant and out of the ordinary, didn’t seem to be wearable and flattering on me at first glance until I wore them! Two shades particularly surprised me because I never knew I would look good in bright colours.

SAMSUNG CSC

Burmese Kiss is a bright coral pink with Matte finish (US$17.50)

SAMSUNG CSC

I love everything about Burmese Kiss – the texture and pigmentation especially. It glides on my lips really well and gives me the impression that it can stay on my lips for hours! Yay, finally a vibrant lipstick that I can wear without feeling out of place and having to touch up every now and then. But wait, haven’t I seen this shade before somewhere?

SAMSUNG CSC

Burmese Kiss is a 99% dupe for Toxic Tale

Why do this to me? 😦 Oh well, I just gotta convince myself that Toxic Tale (from Maleficent and Red, Red, Red collections) is slightly, perhaps by a mere 1%, darker than Burmese Kiss.

SAMSUNG CSC

Forbidden Sunrise is a creamy orange with Matte finish (US$17.50)

SAMSUNG CSC

SAMSUNG CSC

SAMSUNG CSC

My second favourite shade from this collection, this a really pretty orange with yellow and red undertones that really lights up my face. It’s something I would be apprehensive about at first, but hooked onto it after that. I see myself wearing it very often to work 😀 Like Burmese Kiss, the texture and pigmentation are spot on. I had no problems filling in my lips entirely with this. No unsightly lines spotted either!

SAMSUNG CSC

Forbidden Sunrise is a pretty unusual colour. Hence, it’s a worthy buy! 🙂

Moving on to Lavender Jade, the most sought-after shade from this collection which sold out first on site. Now, this is tricky because my camera couldn’t seem to capture its true colour. A quick search on Google also revealed that I’m not the only one facing this problem, so allow me to put my Photoshop skills into action.

SAMSUNG CSC

Lavender Jade is a dirty mauve with gold pearl with Matte finish (US$17.50). The colour of the bullet (just for this picture) has been adjusted to approximate its true colour.

SAMSUNG CSC

SAMSUNG CSC

The colour in real life is definitely darker than this.

SAMSUNG CSC

SAMSUNG CSC

SAMSUNG CSC

Bao Bao Wan wears this shade on the publicity poster for this collection and I felt that it looked really pretty on her. Of course, expectation does not always translate into reality. The cool-toned purple kinda washes me out and needless to say, I think I look terrible in this shade. However, this shade isn’t all bad because it also has great consistency like the two shades above. Its opacity offers great coverage as well.

SAMSUNG CSC

The purple family

SAMSUNG CSC

Romantic Breakdown is a sheer nude with Lustre finish (US$17.50)

SAMSUNG CSC

SAMSUNG CSC

Pardon the poor quality

SAMSUNG CSC

SAMSUNG CSC

Seriously, what’s with MAC and their obsession with sheer nude lipsticks that do absolutely nothing to the lips? And is it necessary for every collection to have at least one such useless shade? *grumbles on* Don’t be fooled by the sweet nude colour of the bullet. Romantic Breakdown, just like the two disappointing lipstick shades from the Cinderella collection, proves to be another money waster. The colour doesn’t show at all on my lips because of the lack of opacity. I understand that MAC lipsticks with Lustre finish are designed to be sheer, but this is ridiculously sheer to the extent that I can barely see anything. What’s the point of putting on lipstick then? 👿

Grrr.. I’m so tired of lamenting. I should just boycott all nude shades in Lustre finish altogether.

Alright, that’s all for this review! What have you got?

Hope you guys enjoyed this review! I have one more coming up, but first let me get some rest. It’s almost 5am here and I have to be up later for work. The sacrifices I make for my blog 😐

Thanks for reading!

REVIEW: MAC Lipstick in Hautecore

Hey everyone!

Sorry for the lack of updates once again. There was a delay in the shipment of my latest batch of lipsticks (purchased before Christmas last year) so this review comes a little late. But it’s better late than never, right? 😉

If you’ve been following my blog, you’d know how much I adore dark lipsticks. The darkest shade of lipstick I had was Film Noir, which I absolutely love by the way, and I thought that was the darkest MAC could go but boy, was I ignorant! To my surprise, MAC had previously launched a black lipstick back in 2013 on Black Friday that was bound to make dark and vampy lipstick lovers pulsate with excitement. Of course, I wasn’t aware of the release because I hadn’t gotten into the whole lipstick craze then. It was available exclusively online and for that one day only.

Last December, the folks at MAC decided to bring it back again (yay!). Likewise, it was only for a day (near-midnight of 16 December in Singapore) and still an online-exclusive product. Hautecore sold like pancakes and it was all gone within hours of release. Thankfully I got mine and I’m so eager to share my thoughts about it with all of you!

Before and after comparison

Hautecore is the ultimate black which goth wannabes would die for. If you’re into Halloween parties, you may also like this. But be warned.. you will definitely get weird stares from passersby with Hautecore on because black lips are just so rare. Go for it only if you’re comfortable with standing out from the crowd and being the centre of attention!

SAMSUNG CSC

Put on a pair of shades and you’re ready to conquer the streets of Orchard!

It glides on well on my lips and despite having a Matte finish, it doesn’t feel dry at all. In fact it has a slight glossy feel which could possibly cause it to bleed (not sure about this as I haven’t tried wearing it for long hours). It doesn’t completely cover my natural lip colour so you can actually still see tinges of pink emanating from below the lipstick upon closer look, giving it a slight purple tint under sunlight. But I don’t think there is another shade that’s darker than this.

SAMSUNG CSC

Comparison with other dark shades I have in my stash!

Hautecore, however, is now sold out on MACCosmetics.com. If you’re interested, you may try searching for it on online marketplaces. But with such popularity, I’m sure this would be brought back again towards the end of the year. No promises, though!
