REVIEW: shu uemura × Super Mario Bros. – Peach’s Eye & Cheek Palette

Hello everyone!

Before the internet became a household fixture, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was a huge phenomenon which provided hours of enjoyment for children cooped up in the house all day (like myself). Through the NES, users were introduced to a whole new world of video games. The “Jump Man” in Donkey Kong in particular received so much attention that it was eventually made into its own game called Super Mario Bros. Today, the character is undeniably one of the things that is synonymous with the ’90s.

This year, the Italian plumber – who recently turns 32 – gets his big break in the beauty world when he was invited to collaborate on a holiday makeup collection by shu uemura. Released on 1 October in the U.S., this 25-piece Super Mario Bros-themed collection offers lipsticks, palettes, cushion cases, cleansing oil and many others presented in packaging that will hit you gamer girls right in the childhood.

Having grown up with Super Mario Bros, saying that I was excited for this launch would be an understatement. I was literally counting down the days until this collection finally makes its appearance at the local shu uemura counters on 15 November!

But sounds like Christmas came early this year as shu uemura Singapore had kindly sent me a few products to blabber about here 😍 In this first instalment of my two-part review on this collection, the spotlight will be solely on the Peach’s Eye & Cheek Palette (which has sold out in the U.S., by the way 😨).

Inspired by Princess Peach (a character in the Mario franchise), the limited-edition eye and cheek palette includes a dual-ended brush, six eye shadows and two glow ons (shu uemura’s version of blush that enhances the natural glow of cheeks) embossed with some distinctive elements of the game. The shades, organised in quads of purple and brown hues, are specially curated to create two highly-achievable monochromatic looks and are exclusive to the palette.

Made with acrylic plastic with a glossy surface, the palette is pink on the outside with pixel art of some notable characters and items of Super Mario, and white on the inside. It is thin yet sturdy and doesn’t take up much storage space. Upon opening the lid, you will be greeted with a removable transparent sheet of plastic with the names (or rather purpose) of each product placed on top of the pans to guide application and perhaps, to prevent the inbuilt mirror from getting dirtied by powder residue.

☆ Eye Shadows ☆

The base shade on the first half of the palette is described as a pink with an iridescent finish which, according to shu uemura, “offer(s) glimmering reflections of changing colors”. It is a light wash of cool pink with finely milled shimmers which have a gritty texture to it. Sheer in coverage, it acts as a lightening and smoothing agent for the shade applied atop it. It can also be used on its own for a dewy look. This feels smidgen dusty and is prone to sheer out when applied dry. Hence, you would get better results (i.e. colour intensifies and a more pronounced shine) when used with a wet brush. Otherwise, if you don’t want to leave a water stain on the eye shadow, perhaps using a dense brush would help the colour show better on the lid.

The styling shade is described as a mauve with a shimmery finish. It appears more of a violet to me with warm undertones and has a slight metallic sheen to it. This shade is safely one of those eye shadows that appears dull when applied, but comes alive when light hits it. It applies sheer at first but is buildable to a semi-opaque coverage. It isn’t too soft or firm in the pan which gives it a smooth and blendable texture. The edges also diffuse rather well without losing much intensity. I experienced a negligible amount of kickback in the pan when I dabbed it with my brush but there wasn’t much fallout on me.

The defining shade is described as a plum with a pearl finish which, as defined by shu uemura, lends a “silky shimmer of light for luminous radiance”. This deep violet contains chunkier purple glitter and has a drier and somewhat uneven texture so undoubtedly there would be fallout during application. Moderately dense and generally patchy in consistency, it sheers out quickly when blended but can be built to an opaque coverage if used with a dense brush. The metallic sheen becomes rather glaring as the eye shadow is piled on. Similarly, this applies noticeably better with a dampened brush. Occasionally, I would use this shade alongside the browns to give my eyes a smokier look.

The base shade on the next half of the palette is described as a gold light with glittery finish which adds “abundant sparkles for glistening glamour”. It is a cool-toned pale gold with a powdery smooth texture. The glitter in this eye shadow is more sparkly in appearance. Although it also seems more scattered, it was fortunately not messy to work with. It may offer sheer coverage but as a base colour, this packs a punch of glow even on the first layer and piling on the product will only build up the shine. I find that this shade applies more smoothly and evenly with the finger tip. On top of that, it can also be used as a lid topper to enhance the sparkle of the main eye shadow colour.

The styling shade for the second look is described as an orange with a metallic finish which is supposedly “smooth like liquid with a metallic glow”. It is an orange with brown undertones and has micro-glitter distributed uniformly to give a nice, frosted sheen. This shade applies evenly and goes on semi-opaque on the first swipe when used with a finger or dense brush (dry or dampened – it doesn’t really matter). Buildable to a completely opaque coverage, it is lightweight and blends fairly well on the lid. It may feel a bit gritty in the pan but there is hardly any kickback and fallout. If I have to pick a favourite in this palette, this will be it!

Lastly, add some definition to the eye with a metallic bronze. This warm-toned brown has faint multicoloured micro-glitter that seems more loosely incorporated into the product. The eye shadow has a powdery smooth consistency with rich pigmentation. It is best applied with a dampened brush for maximum coverage and colour intensity. However, it would require a firmer hand to completely diffuse the edges.

☆ Glow Ons ☆

shu uemura × Super Mario Bros Peach's Eye & Cheek Palette blush

shu uemura × Super Mario Bros Peach’s Eye & Cheek Palette blush

Dreamy Peach is a warm pink with flecks of gold shimmers even though it appears to have more orange undertones in the pan. This Super Star and Super Mushroom-embossed blush has sheer pigmentation and can be built to a semi-sheer at most. It blends quite easily owing to its soft texture but has the tendency to sheer out on normal or drier skin (I had swatch it on my wrist a couple of times and it fades away quickly every time). It doesn’t cause any kickback in the pan nor leave any noticeable dents even after multiple uses and that is great if you, like me, don’t want to ruin the cute embossing on the glow ons 😁

Brave Orange is a pale neon orange with yellow undertones topped with accents of gold shimmers. It comes with Fire Flower and the iconic Question Mark Block embossed on it. Soft and lightly powdery in texture, this blush feels luxuriously smooth to the touch and is buildable to a semi-sheer coverage. I actually find this more pigmented than Dreamy Peach and surprisingly, does not camouflage into my Chinese skin tone nor look too yellowish on me. It can be doubled as a bronzer for lighter skin tones to give a subtle contour. However, it does have the tendency to cling onto the drier areas of the skin which could be why it applied slightly uneven on me and needed some effort to buff out the unsightly streak.

Two looks (without the lipstick, yet!) side by side. Which one do you prefer?

As a Japanese brand serving international markets, shu uemura has managed to strike a balance between bold and delicate with this palette to cater to people on either ends of the preference spectrum. While it delivers a relatively lighter wash of colour with a touch of glitter when used as-is, these attributes can also be easily amped up on the lid with your finger tip or a dampened brush. That said, the choice of shades (especially the glow ons) seems to gear towards lighter skin tones in general.

And in case you didn’t catch the price earlier, this would set you back a whooping S$128 so unless you are obsessed with Super Mario or don’t mind splurging a few hundred dollars on a high-end product (made with top grade ingredients and presumably state-of-the-art technology, no less), I honestly don’t think this is worth burning a hole in your pocket for in terms of the price per ounce for each product in this palette.

What are your thoughts on this adorable palette? Let me know what you think in the comments below or take a quick poll!

Totally unrelated to this palette but what are some of your favourite NES games? Apart from Super Mario Bros, I was hooked on playing Antarctic AdventureIce Climber, Circus, Duck Hunt, Bubble Bobble, Popeye and Bomberman 😆 There should be more but I can’t remember their names at the moment. Just listening to the 8-bit music of these games brings back so many childhood memories!

Anyhoo, thanks for reading and stay tuned for part two of this collection 🙂

REVIEW: shu uemura Rouge Unlimited Lipsticks – Yellow, CR330, RD160, BG965 & WN288

Fans of shu uemura should be no stranger to their Rouge Unlimited range which is known to carry some of their signature lipsticks.

Well, guess what? They have blessed us with 33 more new shades (38 outside Singapore) in various textures, including 4 mixer shades (Purple, Glitter, Yellow and Pearl), for you to experiment with. On top of that, the range also boasts a new formula that offers an intense, true colour with versatile coverage in ultra-light texture.

The lipsticks are encapsulated in (very reflective) silver retractable tubes with thick transparent dome-shaped caps which, according to the designer Kumiko Inui, have been “simplified” and “sharpened” to help enhance the shade visibility (honestly, that’s a fantabulous idea right there as it potentially saves me the trouble of having to remove the cap of every lipstick before finally getting to the shade I want). The crystal-like bottom is also designed as such to enrich a sense of luxury. Sleek and elegant, the packaging basically screams “high-end”.

You can pretty much tell from the list above that shu uemura stands for no nonsense when it comes to naming their lipsticks. They don’t give their lipsticks gimmicky names (probably save for a selected few, but they’re not really marketed so you won’t know until you look them up online) like most beauty brands out there to attract consumers. This gives me the impression that shu uemura means business with their quality. Aesthetics seem to take a back seat to functionality, which is not really a commonplace in today’s competitive business environment.

Let’s now find out how the five shades apply!

Yellow is a vibrant warm-toned yellow with a glossy finish. As a mixer shade, its purpose is to warm up and brighten tones to create tomato reds, tangerines and corals. Therefore, it needs to be used alongside another Rouge Unlimited lipstick to realise its full potential.

When worn on its own, it appears very oily and tacky with an apparent streaky texture on the lips which requires a few coats of it to be reasonably opaque. Yellow works better on a smooth canvas. Hence, the lips need to be exfoliated before application or the product would cling onto the dry areas. Apart from that, the colour seems to only show when the lipstick is applied directly onto the lips. There was hardly any pigment transferred to my lips when I used a lip brush to create my ombré lip looks, even with multiple passes. That said, this lipstick feels lightweight and hydrating and is extremely easy to remove.

CR330 (or Coral Minim) is described as a medium grapefruit pink with a glossy finish. A pink-toned coral that is not too subtle nor garish, it complements pretty well with cool skin tone like mine and exudes a girly demeanour.

It applies smoothly and hydrating with no tug and brightens up the complexion of the wearer with its lustrous shine. Marked by a thin, jelly-like consistency, this shade runs slightly streaky and sheer if applied with only one or two coats but the colour intensity and opacity build up with increasing layers. The product, however, settles into lip lines.

RD160 (Shu Shu Baby) is described as a medium true classic red with warm undertone. When applied, it appears to be a medium-dark red with slight orange undertones and a glossy finish. Lightweight and hydrating, it combines the eye-catching shine and wet look of a gloss, with the comfort and high-impact pigmentation of a lipstick.

Buttery soft and creamy in texture, it glides on like a dream with full, even coverage. One swipe is all it takes to instantly transform a girl next door to a glamourous bombshell. Suitable for fair skin tones, this lipstick adds a pop of colour to the lips and is source to a nice little confidence booster. It does not leave a tacky sensation (just the usual mild greasiness from the cushion oil) nor does it emphasise dryness or lip lines. Most of all, it is fairly long-wearing, leaving a stain after about five hours of wear.

BG965 is described as a muted rose but I would consider it to be more of a raspberry mauve, a shade which is absolutely flattering on medium skin tone. Creamy and smooth as butter, the application gives a uniform consistency and a more satin finish with a hint of shimmer. It applies with some tug (since the bullet itself has a slightly drier texture) and does not emphasise dryness or lip lines. This also has great spreadability, that is, the product distributes evenly with just a little purse of the lips.

It lends an emollient and moisturising effect as it wraps the lips with a comfortable and balmy veil of colour that feels like second skin. It has a buildable colour intensity which enables the shade becomes more pigmented and opaque with more coats. But in all honesty, the colour is perfectly gorgeous on its own so you don’t really need to go too heavy on it. Needless to say, this is easily my favourite in this review!

Inject some sultriness into your autumn look with WN288 (Ride’n Berry)! The darkest shade in this review, it applies as a warm burgundy with a luscious sheen. It is such a pretty colour that I cannot imagine it not working on any skin tone. You can literally ditch the smokey eye and still look high-fashion whilst wearing this lipstick alone.

Apart from a thicker and drier consistency, this also has more of a matte texture to it than the rest. Due to this reason, it causes some tug during application (but no drag). Although buildable to a more opaque and deeper hue, certain areas tend to become patchier than the other as more coats are added. That said, it feels equally hydrating and lightweight on the whole. It also lasts longer and melts into the lips to a just-bitten stain after a few hours of wear.

In addition, I had fun mixing the aforementioned shades on my lips to create some simple ombré lip looks without the use of any lip brush (although using the shu uemura 6M or 6F lip brush is highly recommended by their makeup artist for a more seamless result). I blended the colours just by pursing my lips and this goes to show how blendable the texture of the lipsticks is and how fuss-free the application can be.

All in all, based on these few shades, I think it is quite safe to say that the shu uemura Rouge Unlimited (Central) lipstick series is a worthy investment despite the heftier price tag (M·A·C lipsticks typically never go beyond US$25) which mostly accounts for the R&D that went into the making of these lipsticks (and you know, the Japanese don’t fool around when it comes to their desire for perfection).

Although, admittedly, not every shade gives an “ultra-smooth” application, all of them fulfill the promise of delivering a non-sticky, hydrating and highly-blendable texture as well as a buildable colour. In fact, the finish kinda reminds me of M·A·C Huggable formula. And for the record, these lipsticks don’t carry a strong scent, though I can’t quite put my finger on the smell (it’s not something I had come across before) but it’s definitely pleasant and sweet-smelling. Now, they have got me really curious about their Supreme Mattes too, which already sound like a finish that’s right up my alley 😆 Should I?!?

[NEW] REVIEW: shu uemura Skin Purifier Anti/Oxi+ Pollutant & Dullness Clarifying Cleansing Oil

Hello everyone!

Following the introduction of the Anti/Oxi Skin Refining cleansing oil in 2013, shu umera has been making further improvements to the formula to combat against rising threats to the skin. With the haze becoming a frequent occurrence in Singapore, they have empowered their latest anti-pollution breakthrough, Anti/Oxi+, with the new green trio – papaya extract, moringa extract and green tea extract – to remove pollutants including PM2.5 from the skin.

Special thanks to shu uemura for gifting me these lovely eclairs (baked by Two Bakers), modelled after 6 of their best sellers! They are DELISH.

Special thanks to shu uemura for gifting me these lovely eclairs (baked by Two Bakers), modelled after 6 of their best sellers! They are DELISH.

PM2.5 refers to air pollution particles that have a diameter less than 2.5 micrometers, which is about 3% the diameter of human hair and therefore allowing them to penetrate the skin and bring about the acceleration of skin ageing. This can be prevented with moringa extract, a nutrient-rich herb known for its incredible purifying power with a mechanism similar to that of water purification plants. Besides capturing and clearing away harmful pollutants, moringa extract also counteracts oxidative stress and the effects of free radicals.

The ageing process of the skin can also be impeded with green tea and papaya extracts. I believe there needs no further explanation on the benefits of green tea but not many know that green papaya (unripe) is a great source of vitamin A. The enzyme papain in it also helps to break down inactive proteins and eliminate dead skin cells, thereby acting as a potent yet gentle natural exfoliator for the skin.

This revamped cleansing oil is set to be making its debut in Singapore tomorrow in replacement of the preceding formula.

As with other shu uemura cleansing oils, using this is straightforward and lazy-proof because it removes even the most stubborn makeup such as waterproof mascara and eyeliner (and now matte liquid lipsticks, maybe) with just a single wash. And the most amazing part? Who would have thought that a simple activity like makeup removal would be so simple and beneficial to the skin? As much as I love putting on makeup, I cannot deny that removing it is a pain because they have been increasingly resistant to water and oil. Therefore, many a time I would nonchalantly head to town with my bare, unflattering face. But not anymore! 😀

As I had only used cleansing wipes all my life, I wasn’t quite fond of the idea of cleansing my face with my makeup on because the thought of messily smearing my face with dissolved makeup just grossed me out. But it really isn’t as bad as I had imagined. While most cleansing oils would only be effective with dry hands, this new Anti/Oxi+ can be used with wet hands because of the added water-swellable micelles. If this doesn’t make it extraordinarily easy to use, then I don’t know what is! In fact, I’ve began to enjoy the removal process so much that I actually look forward to removing my makeup now. Thick makeup don’t care  😆

Besides the functionality, the rhythmical fragrance of the oil also contributes to the addictive cleansing ritual. It awakens your senses at first touch with a refreshing top note of elemi, mandarin and ginger, followed by a stimulating and comforting middle note of lavender, cardamon and geranium during massaging and finally a healing base note of gualac wood after washing. If I were to associate the scent to something more distinguishable, I’d say the combined scent is quite close to wheat grass, maybe? Basically, it just feels like I’m in the meadows the whole time! Absolutely invigorating and comforting 🙂

The recommended number of pumps stated on the bottle is 3 to 4, but I personally think 2 pumps would be sufficient for the whole face. All the makeup that come in contact with the cleansing oil are then merged into a thin brown film on the face. Upon rinsing with water, the cleansing oil is emulsified and the makeup gets washed off the face completely, leaving behind a veil of moisture. At this point, my face would normally feel tight (no thanks to my combination skin type) but I haven’t had this experience since I started using this cleansing oil. TERRIFIC!

Also, not forgetting that a bottle of 150ml can last for months. Already I’m about a month into my oil cleansing routine and yet there is still 90% left? Whee!! No doubt, this has made it to my beauty favourites for May! 🙂
