National Day Parade Preview 2014

ndp2014-main

Hello everyone! Sorry for the lack of beauty updates. I’m still waiting for my MAC parcel to arrive. Once it’s here, I’ll do a review on lipsticks 😀 For now I shall do some life updates!

Thanks to my aunt, I had 4 tickets to the preview of National Day Parade (NDP) for last Saturday. If I’m not wrong, it was the first preview for the public. I’ve been to NDP previews at the old National Stadium and the Padang but never to the one at the floating platform, so this year was different for me!

As my parents weren’t interested in the NDP, I invited boyfriend’s parents to come along with us! It was also his mother’s first time attending so I guess she was quite excited to go as well!

Anyway, no entry time is stated on the admission ticket, I think. But from my experience, the parade usually begins somewhere between 5.30pm to 6.00pm. However, it was already packed with people by the time we arrived at 4.00pm (when entry points are officially opened). By 5.00pm, the crowd of people outside waiting to be seated would be ushered to the gallery (free seating). The middle top rows are usually reserved for the motivators.

There are two entrances (1 and 2) to the gallery. Entry 1 leads to the Blue, Yellow and Red sectors while entry 2 leads to the Green and also the Yellow and Red sectors. This year’s fun pack comes in a backpack in six different colour combinations, one of which includes my favourite colour pink, but not all colours were available at both entrances 😦 There were only the orange and green combination from where I entered so I was pretty disappointed 😦

But like every year, the fun pack has everything you need to keep your stomach satisfied throughout the 3-hour performance. There’s also a poncho in case of bad weather. Of course, the auntie in me was more concerned about this year’s discount booklet! Haha. Quite a number of good deals in there.

What’s in the fun pack!

Close up of the goodies! Do note that this is not the complete set as I had drunk one of the beverages 😛 There’s also a packet of Khong Guan biscuit but somehow it’s not in my fun pack.

Beverages excluding a packet of lemon barley

My new favourite tidbit is the yellow packet of cheese crackers! It’s damn nice omg I’m gonna stock up some of this at home! Bad news for my waistline 😦

Here’s what happened during the parade 😀

ndp2014-5

P5 students attending their NE show. I reckon my seating area was for schools in the north-east region because schools like Edgefield Primary, Mee Toh School and Compassvale Primary were there!

ndp2014-4

Boyfriend and I! We were approached by some NDP volunteers to take a picture and I’m supposed to post it up on Instagram and hashtag them. But I can’t seem to remember their hashtag. Anyone?

ndp2014-3

Hossan Leong was one of the host. Probably because it was one of the first few rehearsals, the hosts looked quite unprepared, always referring to their handheld notes when talking haha. The crowd was a little dead that day as well :\

Tattooed my arm!

Tattooed my arm!

ndp2014-2

The simulation of the MPs’ arrival never fails to crack me up! The people holding the MP banner occasionally put up funny faces for the camera.

ndp2014-1

And here comes the red lions! One of them was a female 🙂

ndp2014-13

My favourite part of the parade – the marching contingents! I was part of the Girls’ Brigade in my secondary school but was never good enough for NDP 😦 Inspection was not done by our president of course, but by someone of high rank from the organising committee I think.

In the past, after the marching in, the choir would start performing some National Day songs but strangely for this year, there wasn’t any choir at all! I’m not sure why but could it be because there isn’t any theme song this year? Nonetheless the whole parade felt very odd and quiet without the choir. Why oh why did the organising committee remove them?

ndp2014-12

At this point, we sang the national anthem. I hadn’t sung it for a LONG TIME! Singing it gave me a huge sense of pride 🙂

ndp2014-11

Flypast routine by our fighter jets

ndp2014-15

Showcase of Singapore’s military vehicles.. all of them looked sparkling clean O_O

ndp2014

More of our military vehicles… on the waters!

ndp2014-10

Coloured smoke! So pretty right? I think it was made by the cannons.

ndp2014-9

Our firefighters and a simulated fire scene.

ndp2014-8

The closing performance. At this time, some people started streaming to the exit. Haha

ndp2014-7

One of my best fireworks shots that night! All pictures were taken using my phone by the way.

ndp2014-6

More fireworks!

These are the highlights of the programme! As you can see, it’s nothing spectacular. If you didn’t manage to get the tickets through balloting and are intending to purchase the tickets through other means, I’d definitely advise you against the idea. Save the money for next year’s NDP as it will be Singapore’s 50th year of independence. Thus for that reason, I’m very certain the organising committee would have better plans in store (they probably saved the better ideas for next year, making this year’s parade a little dull haha).

I really, really hope to get tickets for this year though! My luck in balloting hasn’t been good at all 😦

That’s all for this post! Thanks for reading 🙂

Knowing Your Employment Rights

Hey everyone.

This post is more than a year overdue but I’d still like to publish it anyway because it contains an important account of what happened last year and my life actually had a major turn of events. I’ve been contemplating for awhile whether or not to post this coz firstly, it is rather personal and secondly, I’m afraid writing about it may jeopardise my chances of getting a job if my prospective employer decides to do a social media background check on me lol. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t do anything illegal. In fact, it’s the complete opposite. I was being righteously indignant.

(wordy post ahead)

Introduction – The sack

I rarely discuss about my work life on this space for fear that I might reveal information that is not meant to be shared in public by accident. But I am making this an exception because I think it has some educational value haha, especially for students.

To sum things up, I fell out with my previous employer of 3 and a half years and yes, I was fired from the tuition centre I slogged so long for. The sack came after my outburst at my then bosses for their horrible treatment. I spent 3.5 long torturous years working for people who don’t give two hoots about employee welfare and would constantly push you around like a bully. I was young and in need of money back then (as I stopped taking allowance from my parents), so I remained in the company despite its high turnover rate (both admin staff and teachers alike) as it paid enough for my survival and also had quite flexible working hours.

As a job with no prospects, all they could ever hire are students seeking part-time employment to earn some pocket money. But the bosses seem to be very impatient and intolerant of them (most of whom with no relevant working experience) and always going into frenzy of rage, lashing out at them even at the slightest mistake. They believe that by instilling fear in their employees, they would be more efficient in their work. But little do they know that it lowers people’s morale instead and makes everyone afraid to do the more important tasks (and often leaving them to the seniors to do). Even though they do not physically abuse their staff like this crazy man here, they hurl the most hurtful insults capable of making anyone cry. Granted, there were times when the bosses were nice and would plan company retreats for us, but sadly those happy memories were minimal and didn’t last till the next working day.

To be fair, I gained the trust of the bosses after working for a year and was subsequently promoted to supervisor when I informed them about my plan to delay my studies. The promotion came with an undeniably high pay increment (but here’s the catch: I had to return to the centre whenever they needed me), 7-day annual leave (as opposed to the usual 14 days) but without CPF contribution. I requested for the latter but was turned down because my salary already had CPF included. If I wanted contribution to my CPF account, I had to do it myself coz I was a “self-employed” (erm wtf? Who are you trying to bluff?) At this point in time, I felt a little cheated but still went ahead to fulfill my commitment because it paid well and I needed to save up to pay my Uni fees. There wasn’t even a contract to bind me lol so technically I could leave if I wanted to. But I’m not that irresponsible.

Their attitude towards me began to change a little but being in a management position also meant more work and responsibility. My phone never failed to ring during my off days and most conversations began with lady boss chiding me for mistakes I didn’t make. Initially I took it gracefully but by the third year, I had enough. They really needed to stop treating me like a doormat. I started reasoning with them but my self-defence was regarded as being defiant so our relationship became sour again. My school term started and I reverted to part-time status and could only work 4 days per week including weekends. Gradually, my working hours were shortened by them to cut cost, leaving me with only 2 working days shortly before I was out of the company. Despite that, my workload remained heavy because other less experienced staff wouldn’t want to touch them. Working overtime was also prohibited because they were very reluctant to pay more (not sure why the massive cost-cutting exercise when their business was booming and tuition fees were always on the rise). However with just 2 working days with no time for me to do anything else during operating hours (was always wanted at the front desk as staff couldn’t handle customers’ enquiries alone), it was impossible to complete everything required of me. Thus I had to work overtime til midnight on my what-eventually-became-my-last day at work. I told my ex-colleague, who was there with me for awhile, to explain on my behalf if the lady boss questioned her the next day. I didn’t want to text her because it was already quite late at night.

Then came the last straw. I received a confrontational text from the lady boss the next morning, demanding me not to instruct my staff to tell her that I worked overtime (“Fiona do not get your colleague to tell me what you did for the day”). Apparently that colleague of mine texted her when she left the previous night because she was afraid that she would forget how to tell her if questioned (omg what?). That text came across to me as very brusque and suddenly all the agony and displeasure that I had been bottling up burst from me. In response, I typed 5 long angsty messages to tell her how I felt (no personal insults, just my feelings) and yup, you know it. I was fired. And the news wasn’t even conveyed by her, but by her husband who happened to be the other boss. It turned out that she had also taken a dislike to me (lol no surprise right?) and was probably finding the right time to get rid of me as well. Great, I had given them the opportunity.

To be frank, I don’t feel that offended when I read her messages now. I must’d felt really terrible back then to have such an overreaction. Please understand that I DO NOT usually behave like that!!!

The compensation

Having read a bit of employment law in Poly, I somewhat knew that it is wrong to terminate one’s employment without prior notice. So I sought advice from Ministry Of Manpower (MOM) and true enough, my ex-bosses had gone against the law (they never complied to most anyway). I quote the reply I got from MOM dated 4 March 2013:

Under the Employment Act, both the employee and the employer could exercise its contractual right to terminate the contract of service by giving notice in writing or by paying salary in-lieu of notice to the other party. The notice period shall be in accordance with what is stated in the contract of service. If no such period is previously agreed, the following shall apply:

Length of ServiceNotice Period

less than 26 weeks — 1 day
26 weeks to less than 2 years — 1 week
2 years to less than 5 years — 2 weeks
5 years and above — 4 weeks

If an employer wishes to terminate the employee’s contract of service without giving any notice, he may do so by compensating the employee with salary in-lieu of notice. The employer will also be required to issue a termination letter to the employee.

If you are covered by the Employment Act (ie. not employed in a managerial or executive position) and were given a contractual termination without any advance notice as stated in your contract, you could seek the assistance of the Ministry of Manpower to claim for the notice pay.

Based on the bolded part, I had the right to continue working in the company for the next 2 weeks. But of course, since my ex-bosses hated me so much, they’d rather pay me the salary in-lieu of notice so that they didn’t have to see my face ever again.

The compensation was labelled as “long-service bonus” on the payment voucher can you believe that?!? If I didn’t inform them about this rule, would they even bother to “thank” me for my service? NO. Even at this point of writing, I am still their longest serving admin staff (that’s how bad the turnover rate is). And I dare say I was one of their best employees, or probably the best. I practically slaved away for 3.5 years to get everything in the centre in order alright?

Actually they would la. They owed me a salary of $112 at time of termination. They wrote me a cheque of $120. $8 bonus. 🙂

The complaint to CPF Board

I admit I felt really disgruntled after the incident and all I wanted to do was to get back at them. But I hesitated on lodging a complaint against them to CPF because I knew the seriousness of the consequences they’d face. After all, they had NEVER contributed a single cent to anyone’s CPF account since they started operations in 2004. The arrears owed to all the employees from day 1, coupled with the fine for defaulting on CPF payments, were enough to wipe out most of their earnings (click here to read more about the penalties for defaulting on CPF payments). I didn’t want to be so cruel to resort to that but my boyfriend strongly urged me to get back what I deserved. Think about it: how much had they pocketed just by not contributing to my CPF alone for the past 3 years+ especially during the period of time when I was a full-time staff? It’s A LOT of money.

He is right. These exploitative employers ought to be taught a painful lesson. Most of the admin staff they hired were young female students and they were obviously preying on their naivety and timidity. Unfortunately, I am not one of these girls. And I really hope more students can stand up for themselves.

Hence I proceeded to lodge a complaint through my SingPass (procedures here). It took CPF Board only 3 working days to get back to me. I had to make several trips down to the office itself to be interviewed and produce supporting documents (bank statements to show how much I was paid, proof of employment etc.) but other than that, everything else was settled swiftly by CPF Board (staff that well-handled this case was Ms See Swee Ping who had already left the board). I am also very grateful to one of my ex-colleagues (whose identity remains confidential here) for agreeing to be my witness 🙂

The drama unfolded

It turned out that my ex-bosses never registered their business with CPF Board hence they were able to get away with defaulting on so many CPF payments. Apparently CPF Board and ACRA are separate entities so they will not be able to check which companies fail to make CPF contributions if they are not even registered in the first place. Quite a silly system if you ask me…

Anyway, my ex-bosses (and their partner-in-crime accountant) tried several absurd ways to save their sorry ass. I was extremely angered by their actions and they made me feel that they deserved the harsh penalty. Can you believe that they tried to wiggle their way out of trouble by lying that all the admin staff were freelancers!?!?! Freefreakinglancers. Because freelancers do not get paid CPF. And that’s not it. They even dug out contacts of past employees from as long as 3 years ago, instructing them NOT to reveal that they once worked for the company if CPF ever called them. Existing staff, under the influence of the evil bosses, were also told to persuade past employees whom they are friends with not to reveal the truth! How despicable right?

But I’m sorry. 老天有眼. CPF Board has their ways to investigate and we are definitely NOT freelancers. Furthermore, many past employees I got in touch with were more than willing to testify against them (shows how terrible they were as employers to incur so much wrath). Actually, once a person is proven to have worked for a company before, he would still be entitled to CPF contributions regardless of whether he wants it or not.

Aftermath

The entire process lasted for 3 months and I got my 3.5 years worth of CPF contribution in mid May 2013. And because it was the fault of the employers for failing to contribute, the CPF recipients did not have to pay anything at all, not even the 36% of wage contribution.

I understand that as students, you would naturally want more take-home pay. I wouldn’t mind not having CPF contribution if it was a short-term job. But if you intend to stay in a job for a long time like me, it is better to opt for CPF. Seriously only when you reach my age (a.k.a adulthood) will you comprehend the importance of CPF. Think about the prices of HDB flats nowadays… how to pay?!?! You have to start young to get that kinda money. Unless you’re some rich person la then I bo wei gong.

I know I seem like a very spiteful person here but truth is, if my ex-employers were nice and reasonable, this wouldn’t happen at all even though it’s wrong to default on payments. Believe me when I say that I’m compassionate.

So the bottom line is if you’re going to be a nasty employer, you better make sure you leave no trace of your dirty work ethics behind.

Anyway, the termination was a blessing in disguise. After being trapped in the job for more than 3 years, I could finally explore other career (not the right word to use but meh it sounds nicer haha) options. I had since worked at Love, Bonito, a company which I wanted to work for a long time ago but never had the chance to coz I was supposed to commit my free time to that tuition centre. Now I’m very happy providing tuition and designing services. Life’s really great now and I wouldn’t trade anything in the world for that. Unless, yeah, there’s a job opening with really attractive pay package hehe!

Til next time 🙂

Guide to WKWSCI Admission Interview

Hello everyone!

PLEASE READ: Please direct all questions to the comments section below so that they will also be visible for other prospective students. Do note that I will not be entertaining any NTU-related enquiries through e-mail from now on. Thank you for your understanding!

The time of the year is here again, when prospective students frantically scour through the internet for tips to ace their college/university admission interviews. I hope what I documented prior to my acceptance to NTU help shed some light on how the interview works. I have also received numerous e-mails pertaining to this so I thought I should share some frequently asked questions here for the benefit of those who’re too shy to approach me.

Please bear in mind that I’m merely a student of the school and not some ambassador who is authorised to speak on behalf of WKWSCI, so everything that is written here are merely my thoughts. It’s always advisable to seek second opinion before forming your own judgement 🙂

You can still e-mail me at askme@fionaseah.com should you have queries not answered here. I’m always very happy to help prospective students!

I also appreciate feedback about the accuracy and helpfulness of this entry! Do share your joy with me if you succeed at your interview as well! 🙂

Before I begin the FAQs, there is ONE thing you’d need to know about WKWSCI before you go for the interview because it’s one achievement that we’re so damn proud of and it’d be a shame if you don’t already know it:

According to the 2014 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject, NTU’s Communication & Media Studies is ranked 6th in the world…. NTU said the subject Communication & Media Studies jumped an impressive 17 positions within two years since QS started ranking this subject, to become No 1 in Singapore and in the Asia-Pacific.

Interview FAQs

1. I do not come from a Communication Studies (CS)-related diploma programme. Is my chance of getting accepted into WKWSCI slimmer?

I had received tons of emails about this which makes this the most frequently asked question. This is very subjective so my opinion on this is: yes and no. ‘Yes’ because you may not have relevant portfolio to show that you’re suitable for the course and ‘No’ because you MAY not need to even produce any portfolio (with exception of NAA), thus categorising you with the JC applicants who also have no experience in this field.

In fact, I think that people with CS background stand a slightly lower chance of getting in because they’d expect higher standards from us. When I went for my interview, I had to make a short impromptu speech on top of producing my portfolio which showed my designing AND writing capabilities even though I already expressed my interest in the advertising field clearly from the start. Some of my friends who graduated with Business diplomas on the other hand got it way easier – they didn’t have to produce any portfolio because the interviewers refused to see them so all they did was talk. Of course, a handful of my DBA (a Business course offered by Singapore Poly) friends briefly showed what they did to a different interviewer so it all really boils down to the one(s) interviewing you!

But if you want a definite answer, I think it’d be a ‘No’. I always have the impression that WKWSCI assesses every applicant fairly. They don’t shun people with no CS background nor do they only favour those who have. However, you definitely need to possess 2 sets of IMPORTANT skills in order to be considered, regardless of the specialisation you intend to pursue. They are writing AND public speaking. If you don’t have these skills, CS is probably not the course for you.

2. What should I do if I do not have any CS-related portfolio to show?

First and foremost, I recommend that you decide what specialisation track to pursue if you were accepted into WKWSCI as doing so makes you seem less indecisive. WKWSCI offers the following tracks to concentrate:

  • Journalism
  • Broadcast & Cinema Studies
  • Advertising
  • Public Relations
  • Communication Policy & Research
  • Inter-Disciplinary

For me it was, no doubt, advertising like duh… I spent my entire Poly life trying to perfect my advertising/design portfolio hahaha. I had no problem answering any advertising-related questions. What stumbled me was the interviewer’s request to view my writing because I had just too many design works that didn’t show my writing proficiency at all.

Having a track in mind makes your more focused on improving on your portfolio. You can modify it according to what you want to pursue. For example, if you want to be a journalist/PR, you should have more write-ups than anyone else to show your flair for writing. Or if you want to be in the advertising field, you should have some mockups WITH COPY (learn from my mistake). They DON’T have to be perfect/professional because if you’re so good, then why are you applying to University? You can start working already! FYI that was exactly what my interviewer told me -_- I was repeatedly shot down by him when I answered that my works were amateurish. “No no no! What is there to improve on? These are very good! You shouldn’t waste your time here! Go apply into SUTD or SIT!!!111”

Since having good command of English is what makes the cut, producing anything that shows your proficiency in the language should be sufficient in that aspect. Personally I think you can show reports you had done during your Poly course (or GP/History essays done in JC), or you can do a write-up/essay about anything that interests you. I believe the interviewer (typically a professor) will be interested to read about your thoughts. If you were part of a CCA in Poly that required you to write (a writer for the school magazine or something), you should also include that in your portfolio. Once again, it doesn’t have to be of top-notch standard and LONG but it has to be grammatically correct. I showed my copy for a newsletter (about 5 lines) and the interviewer seem pretty satisfied with it. Haha.

During the application process you would have already indicated your course of study in Poly, hence the interviewers would most probably know that you do not have anything really CS-related to show. Just show what you did during your 3-year course and if possible, select those that are closely related to CS (e.g. event planning, marketing plan etc.).

Always, always bring something to show to your interviewer(s) even though they MAY not look at them (it depends on how lucky you are). Going there empty-handed = bo chup, okay?

3. Since I do not have any background in CS, would it be difficult for me to keep up with the lessons?

NO OF COURSE NOT. You basically start from scratch in Uni and study the fundamentals of everything media before you choose your specialisation. That means you have to, at least once in the course, design a newsletter, write a press release, shoot a short film, study media law, study the history of media and other not-so-fun stuff. The only difference between one with CS background and one without is the ABILITY TO EXEMPT FROM COURSES and end your programme 1 semester earlier. But there are MANY people I know who came from Mass Comm in Poly who chose not to accelerate the programme because the graduation ceremony will be held on the same day anyway.

4. What were some of the questions thrown at you during the interview?

Okay I hope my memory doesn’t fail me. I am not feeding you my responses because if you guys are passionate about the course, you should have your own answers!

“Why did you choose WKWSCI and not elsewhere?” (elsewhere – if you get what I mean)

“What do you like to do?”

“Why do you want to apply into WKWSCI and not enter the working industry since you already have so much experience?”

“Why not SUTD and SIT?”

“In WKW, we value good writing and public speaking skills. Do you have anything to show your proficiency in writing?”

“Now, give me a 3-minute speech about someone who inspires you or someone whom you look up to.”

And lastly… “If you can’t get in this year, try applying again next year okay?” to which I replied, “This is my second application.” He was a little dumbfounded. “Oh..”

5. What should I wear for the interview?

Anything not too formal, casual, fanciful and revealing. For girls, just be donned in a knee-length dress and for guys, short sleeves top with long pants should do the trick. Jeans are fine too.

6. How long must I wait for the interview results to be out?

I waited for close to 2 weeks but that was during the appeal period. If you had your interview before that, it should be faster.

Other WKWSCI-related FAQs

1. What are some essentials I need to have?

There are no needs per se because the school has almost everything. As long as you’re a student there, you get free access to the computer labs and printers (have to pay but through credits). Of course, your life would be much easier if you have the following:

  • Macbook
… but I’m still coping very well with my HP laptop. Go Windows!!!
  • Adobe Design and Web Premium
… Basically all you need from there are Photoshop, Dreamweaver and InDesign. Contrary to popular beliefs, it is not expensive to own the authentic Photoshop. You can get the Adobe Design and Web Premium at student price from mine.com.sg.
  • Final Cut Pro (FCP)
… to edit videos but it’s only available for Mac. Windows users have to edit their videos in school 😦 The authentic copy can cost you thousands of dollars though so usually students get it by other *sinister look* means.
  • Sony Vegas Pro / Adobe Premiere Pro
… Another alternative for FCP. Sony Vegas Pro and Adobe Premier Pro are also Windows-supported. Likewise, you can only get them by other means.
  • Microsoft Office
… For report writing and creating presentation slides. MO isn’t that important now that we have Google Drive. But nowadays students also like to act cool and 一个 artsy fartsy and use Prezi instead for their presentation. Huh why? I find Prezi too complicated and error-prone. I have never encountered any group that managed to go through all Prezi transitions smoothly without exclaiming, “Oops!” and then clicking several times before getting to the right frame. I get massive headache just by looking at the slides zooming in and out in fast motion.

2. I missed the Freshmen Orientation Camp!!!!! O SHIT WHAT SHOULD I DO!?!?!

NOTHING. Relax and let nature takes its course. If you’re intending to stay in hall, you don’t have to worry at all. If you’re not, you can still meet nice people through group projects and elective classes! Or if you’re free, through clubs and other CCAs. Please always remember that you go to school to study okay, not to be the most popular person or something. Life will still be equally awesome with just 432 Facebook friends and 3 likes on your statuses LOL. Life will still be equally fantastic even if you have to eat, travel and study alone sometimes.

That’s all from me 🙂 I will update this post as and when I have new questions but please don’t ask me about FASS because I don’t think it’s fair for someone who know nuts about the NUS/FASS to answer them.

Thanks for reading!
