REVIEW: Kylie Cosmetics Send Me More Nudes Velvet Liquid Lipsticks – Naked, Birthday Suit, Commando & Bare

Hello everyone!

The balmy weather is about to make way for the wintry chills. But there are still a couple of summer releases that I’ve yet to talk about here. So please bear with me as I take you through more of my purchases over the past few months ūüėÜ *sigh* Too much makeup, too little time..

In a further attempt to propel Kylie Jenner to billionaire status by the age of 25, I camped by my phone one faithful night as I waited patiently to splurge my money on her Vacation collection¬†ūüėŹ As expected, the Wet Set was quickly wiped off the shelves within a minute of being stocked up. I wasn’t fazed by that because years of lipstick shopping experience have trained my eyes to automatically block out everything except the Send Me More Nudes Liquid Lipstick Sets ūüėÜ

With a choice of two finishes РMatte and Velvet, Send Me More Nudes comprises four vanilla-scented full-size tubes for the price of US$45 per set. I had only tried her Mattes so far thus I was naturally drawn to (and curious about) the Velvets. I carted it out and got it delivered to my U.S. forwarding address since shipping is only free for international orders over US$60.

The liquid lipsticks are filled in clear frosted tubes that are velvety to the touch and then fitted in a beige sliding box (like the KKW Crème Liquid Lipsticks) with gold-foiled lettering. Each liquid lipstick has a net weight of 0.11 oz or 3.0 g.

All the names of the liquid lipsticks are synonymous with 'nude'

I love my mattes but the better-performing ones can really suck the moisture out of the lips sometimes and I don’t like how gross and chapped mine look after a few hours of wear. The velvet formula, on the other hand, is supposed to mimic the long-wearing effect of the matte without drying down completely and sending my lips to Atacama Desert. Judging from the wrist swatches above, the claims seem to hold true. But we won’t know for sure until we try them out on the lips..

Naked is described as a sandy beige. It is a pale warm beige with a soft, semi-matte finish that does not dry down completely, therefore causing it to be less resistant to transfer and shortening its longevity on the lips.

This light shade applies fairly smoothly and coats the lips in opaque colour with one easy swipe. It takes after the streaky appearance of most matte formula but doesn’t feel as drying so it won’t crumble when I eat or drink. In addition, it leaves¬†a slightly tacky (but not as sticky as gloss) surface which wears off to a rather messy powdery texture after a few hours.

I don’t think this shade of nude looks flattering on my skin tone even though it has just enough dark pigment to avoid making me look completely like a washed-out zombie. It is too pale for my liking. That said, this is a great choice if you’re going for an understated glamour look and it would certainly stand out more against lighter skin tones too!

Kylie Cosmetics Send Me More Nudes Velvet Liquid Lipstick – Birthday Suit

Birthday Suit is described as a nude warm beige. It is a muted toasty orange with a distinct yellow undertone and has a semi-matte finish which, similar to Naked, does not dry down completely to keep the lips hydrated. On the downside, it does not lend a long-lasting application. Moreover, in contrast to other lipsticks in this bundle, this shade has a visibly runnier formula which makes it tacky and extremely prone to smudges and transfer. Also, somehow this looks like a less intimating version of Butternut (which is going to be launched later today by the brand).

Although it applies somewhat streaky at first, it fills the lips with a light and soft texture that is gradually buildable to an opaque coverage. It also gives a slight wet-look shine for added dimension. This fades to a patchy stain after five hours of wear.

Commando here is described as a terracotta beige and it is my personal favourite from this bundle! It is a lovely muted red orange with a semi-matte finish which glides on the lips smooth and easy. The pigmentation is saturated with colour and one swipe is suffice to create an even, full coverage on the lips without placing emphasis on my parched patches. I find this to be the most matte of all the lipsticks (minus the dryness) featured in this review because of its thicker and creamier consistency as well as the fact that it has less sheen to it.

While it does also apply somewhat tacky with minimal drying, it is not as susceptible to transfer as the rest. In fact, it remains mostly intact from beginning to end, even after two heavy meals. It wore so well on me that I didn’t find the need to retouch on it throughout the five hours it was on my lips. Furthermore, this shade also earned me a few compliments ūü§ó¬†Well, enough said – this receives an A grade from me!

Bare is described as a¬†nude pinky beige. It is an..¬†*yawn*¬†uninspiring light mauve with a semi-matte finish. I mean, it is a nice, safe (*ahem* basic) everyday colour and all but wouldn’t you agree that this hue has been done too many times before by every beauty brand? ūüėī I’m also quite positive that Kylie Cosmetics had come up with a few shades prior to this which are very similar to Bare.. but I digress.

Likewise, this shade runs rather smoothly on the lips and gives a mostly opaque yet slightly thin and watery texture – which I honestly didn’t mind so long as it doesn’t apply streaky or wear off almost immediately upon contact with other things. Unfortunately, not only does Bare tend to emphasise the fine lines, it also appears to be a little patchy and these flaws become more noticeable with time. Apart from that, it isn’t food- and drink-proof. In terms of colour and quality of Bare, #IssaNo for me ūüôÖ

Kylie Cosmetics Send Me More Nudes Velvet Liquid Lipstick Рswatch comparison for all four shades against KKW Crème Liquid Lipsticks

When Kylie Cosmetics first teased about the Send Me More Nudes Liquid Lipstick Set, the first thought that came to mind was if it was going to be another disappointing quad of vastly indistinguishable nude lipsticks like the KKW Cr√®mes. Fortunately, unlike those lip drenchers (because those are too trashy to be considered lipsticks) from KKW collaboration, there is more tone disparity among the neutrals in this collection. They are not as muted as the KKW Cr√®mes and are¬†definitely¬†longer-lasting too ūüôĄGranted, some shades in this set may be too light or dark for your preference but you are bound to find one that complements your skin tone!

Kylie Cosmetics Send Me More Nudes Velvet Liquid Lipstick - swatch comparison for you ColourPop junkies

Now, this would probably fuel the rumour that Kylie Cosmetics is actually repackaged ColourPop (which I highly doubt as their matte formula are very different) but Kylie’s Velvet and ColourPop’s Satin are strikingly similar application-wise. Both are equally non-drying and comfortable on the skin. Heck, even the applicators seem to be of the same size ūüėā However, I must admit that ColourPop dries down more uniformly and lends a more huggable second skin-like effect on the lips. So, if you spot any ColourPop dupe in my swatches, get them instead at a fraction of the Kylie Cosmetics’ price ūüėĚ

REVIEW: MAC Fruity Juicy Lipsticks – Love At First Bite & Si, Si, Me!

Hello everyone!

Now that¬†the sun has finally broken through the raging clouds to warm us with its delightful rays, bright pops of tropical colours are officially in full swing. Ah, fellow beautyholics, you know what that means –¬†it’s time to update our makeup game for the summer season! Because for makeup fiends like us, nothing says summer like a radiant¬†swoosh of blush and swathe of highlight on the cheekbones to¬†mimic that healthy flush, or¬†a dusting of bronzer to radiate a sun-kissed glow coupled with a playful¬†jolt¬†of colour across the lips to heighten that overall refreshed look.

Fueling our obsession with¬†all-things vibrant (especially at this sunny¬†time of the year), M.A.C has planned a Summer collection slated for worldwide release on 18 May. And¬†you know, when it comes to most¬†limited-edition collections, M.A.C means business and does not mess around with their packaging. From¬†packaging designs we saw in the previous year inspired by the deserts and kaleidoscopic colours of an ancient Chinese art form, M.A.C is somehow always able¬†to¬†tempt us¬†into splurging on their products no matter the necessity for them. So this month, be prepared to see a dip in your bank account because you wouldn’t want to miss anything in this upcoming frootilicious¬†M.A.C collection ūüėč

With daylilies, palm leaves, bananas and papayas dominating the packaging, the Fruity Juicy collection is a kind of tropical fruits and floral fantasia that beckons with its loud and fancy colour scheme. Therefore, you should have no problems spotting the display in the M.A.C store when the collection comes out next week.

Pictured at a recent M.A.C preview I was invited to. No idea why there are Chinese characters on the display but they probably won't be there on the actual launch day

Excluding the online-exclusive Eye Shadow √ó 6 in Oh My Banana¬†(already launched in the UK), there will be a total of 21 products in this collection to fulfill your summer makeup goals. And to better prep your bank account for the sudden departure of at least a few tens of dollars, here’s the full price (and product) list for this collection, courtesy of M.A.C Cosmetics Singapore:

Going against my hoarder tendencies, I only snagged two out of the four lipstick shades because as you might have noticed, the nude-ish hues are really light even on my wrist and from past experience, I doubt they will show up on my lips at all. Besides, the darker shades seem to apply better as well.

Described as a bright fuchsia with Amplified Creme finish, Love At First Bite is a muted hot pink with cool undertones. It has good slip which enables it to run smoothly without drag but it tends to settle into the lip lines after a while. It has an opaque payoff and an emollient and glossy texture, characterised by a slight sheen. Although thin and lightweight in consistency, it applies uniformly across the lips so there is no skipping or obvious streaks. This shade feels hydrating on the lips.

M.A.C Fruity Juicy Lipstick in Sí, Sí, Me! (US$17 / S$36)

Described as a deep violet with Satin finish, S√≠, S√≠, Me! is a darkened fuchsia pink with cool undertones.¬†It has equally good slip¬†backed by¬†a thick and buttery texture with¬†an incredibly¬†pigmented¬†colour payoff topped with a luscious sheen. It reminds me of the reformulated version of M.A.C’s matte because it feels matte but not drying at all.

You don’t have to purse your lips to even out the colour with this lipstick – it pretty much spreads out uniformly on its own as you apply. Although it goes on¬†reasonably opaque at the first swipe, its intensity¬†can still be built on with more coats. However, it become tackier with every additional layer.

This collection may not boast a diverse range of hues (as it’s just nudes and pinks). Even so, die-hard M.A.C customers who are suckers for nice packaging will flip over it. Don’t know what to buy or which products are expected to sell out fast? The availability of the items¬†on the UK website should provide a rough indication of the product¬†popularity among consumers. Be sure to be at the launch early¬†if you are planning to get the Prep+Prime Fix+ because (according to reliable sources) it will be among the first (if not the first) to fly off the shelves. Heard it’s coconut-scented (didn’t really pay attention to it at the preview), so yeah… ūüėĚ

REVIEW: MAC Blue Nectar Lipsticks – Give In, Riot House, Sweet Venom, Ablaze, Intoxica & Barbeque

Hello everyone!

How was your Cinco de Mayo weekend¬†for my readers who are residing in the states? Did it leave you a few hundreds of dollars poorer overnight? I feel ya, babes… ūüėĘ

Sorry for the delayed beauty update because I just couldn’t muster up enough energy to turn on my computer after more than 8 hours at work each day.. *yawns* But I promise to post more often when my long break comes in about three weeks’ time.¬†I have a mountain’s worth¬†of beauty products¬†– accumulated over the past few weeks – to¬†talk about and I am sure you wouldn’t want to miss any of them. So please be patient, fellow beautyholics! ūüėܬ†I guarantee it’s gonna be worth the wait..

Unfortunately, if you’re here expecting my first update in three weeks¬†to be on a¬†latest makeup collection, I’m afraid you’re going to be disappointed again (there is definitely one in the works, so come back again in a few days or look out for updates on my Instagram ‚ėļ). For now, it’s throwback to yet another old M.A.C collection.

Remember nearly a year ago, M.A.C welcomed the summer season with a new collection called Blue Nectar? Since it’s going to get warm again in most parts of the world, I thought it’s about time¬†I thrust it into the limelight since you can technically still buy them online.

M.A.C Blue Nectar, June 2016

M.A.C Blue Nectar, June 2016

Launched last year (in May online and June in stores), Blue Nectar saw the release and repromote of 12 lipsticks (Courting Seduction / Lured In / Invite Intrigue / Intoxica / Lush Extract / Riot House / Give In / Sweet Venom / Heroine / Ablaze / Breathing Fire / Barbeque) and 6 Plushglass (Fulfilled / Ample Pink / In Abundance / Robust / Fashion Fanatic / Full for You) in idyllic hues of orange, red and purple, but this review will only be featuring 6 of the said lipstick shades. Interestingly, despite the name of the collection, there was not a single blue lipstick.

Some of these shades may ring a bell¬†to those¬†who have been¬†keeping track of all the M.A.C¬†launches because¬†one-third of them are either repromotes or already in the permanent line. If you had passed on them the first time ’round due to the price hike, you will be delighted to know that they have made a comeback in a somewhat cheaper price tag, sans the fancy packaging.

Although¬†they were relaunched as limited-edition shades again, all of them (including the new ones)¬†are still available on the M.A.C website the last time I checked. So in case you are interested to¬†purchase any of them, I have hyperlinked the¬†names of the featured shades to their individual product pages for your convenience ūüėČ

Without further ado, let’s get started on the reviews!

Since Blue Nectar was launched during the summer season, it seemed only right to incorporate some pastels and soft neutrals to add a touch of playfulness to the collection. Among those hues was Give In, a creamy natural pink with Amplified Creme finish. It runs smoothly on the lips without skipping and leaves a buttery but streaky texture with a slight sheen to it. The colour payoff can be somewhat sheer at the first swipe but it is buildable to a decently opaque consistency. It does not settle into the lip wrinkles no matter how much product is applied.

However, it is not long-lasting as its emollient quality makes it move a lot, so much so that frequent reapplication would be necessary. This shade leans more towards the hydrating spectrum.

Colours in nature change with the season, and so does makeup.¬†In preparation for the impending humid months, it’s about time we tweak our makeup routine and opt for hues that enable us to stay seasonally appropriate. As beauty enthusiasts, when we think summer, minimally made-up looks come to mind, and along with that are bright attention-grabbing lips¬†colours such the warm reds and cheery pinks¬†to show¬†that you so did not compromise on your makeup game for the warm weather. For the gutsier ones who don’t mind experimenting with something more unusual,¬†why not adopt the¬†neon¬†lip look¬†this summer using near-fluorescent shades like Riot House?

Described as a light vivid orange with Matte finish, Riot House Рa repromote shade from the Kelly Osbourne collection launched back in 2014 Рpunctuates the traditional lip hues of summer with a fun pop of sandy beach colour. When applied, it tugs a little on lips as it leaves a mostly opaque and Рunfortunately Рuneven consistency while settling into my lip creases. It is slightly buildable but adding more product would mean accentuating lip dryness even further because of its flat matte appearance. On top of that, deeper cracks start forming around the lip lines with every little movement of my mouth. Even so, this shade feels neither drying nor hydrating on the lips.

If you’re not ready to trade your reds or pinks for neon hues just yet, no pressure – you can absolutely still look chic in hues¬†you’re comfortable wearing on your lips. In fact, Blue Nectar explores an assortment¬†of reds and pinks¬†that you probably don’t have in your stash. So, if you’ve been using the same ol’ red or pink lipstick for the past couple of summers and have decided it is time for a change, look no further, for I have picked out four¬†uncommon variations of¬†the quintessential lipstick hue from this collection, beginning with the lightest¬†one – Sweet Venom.

Described as an intense pink coral with Matte finish, it is a more of a full baby pink with cool undertones which complements light to medium skin tones best. Sweet Venom applies like a Satin without little to no tug at the lips and although it is supposedly a Matte lipstick, it actually has more slip than the first two nudes featured here. It has an opaque coverage with smooth consistency at the first swipe. The texture feels a little powdery but not obvious to the eye. It can stay on for hours but only if it does not come in contact with oily food. This shade is neither drying nor hydrating.

Set your lips on fire with a ravishing red this summer! Described as a bright apricot cream with Matte finish, Ablaze adds a twist to traditional red with its bright reddish-orange hue and warm undertones and hence making it perfect for those who do not want to stray too far from safe colours.

This shade – which was first released as part of the Fashion Sets collection in 2013 –¬†has great slip¬†as it runs effortlessly on the lips¬†to lend a¬†smooth Satin-like finish. It provides a rich colour payoff and a buildable opaque consistency that allows for a full, uniform coverage while imparting a soft sheen. It clings comfortably to the lips¬†with its emollient and lightweight texture but does feel a bit tacky at the same time. Similarly, this shade is neither drying nor hydrating.

Described as a bright raspberry red with Matte finish, Intoxica appears as a vivid pink-red with blue undertones. It goes on creamy with some tug but no drag, coating the lips with an intense colour payoff with just a single swipe. Each application delivers an opaque coverage coupled with a smooth and seamless finish like a true Matte (minus the dryness and chalkiness), resulting in a fuller lip look.

In addition, it also has a subtle sheen to it so that it does not look completely flat on your lips or make them seem brittle and dehydrated. This shade is long-wearing but it feels heavy and can be a little drying on the lips, so make sure you use a lip balm before applying the lipstick.

What’s summer without barbecue? Guess what – now there’s a lipstick to go along with the ambience of outdoor dining and the warmth of a real fire as¬†M.A.C had relaunched¬†a hue that would instantly remind you of your favourite summer tradition (and¬†was¬†even¬†named after it). Described as a vivid orange red with Matte finish, Barbeque very much¬†resembles the glowing¬†embers of barbecue fire due to its punchy deep tangerine colour and warm undertones. This was first released as part of the Isabal and Ruben Toledo collection in 2015.

It has a similar creamy texture to Intoxica but perhaps due to its¬†heavier, drier and thicker consistency, it¬†also tugs slightly at the lips.¬†The product spreads evenly across the lip upon application but somehow settles into lip lines after a few minutes. There’s absolutely no doubt about the colour payoff as you can see –¬†it is so incredibly pigmented and opaque that¬†you’d only need to run the lipstick over your lips ONCE to get full coverage. This is¬†another classic example of why M.A.C remains ahead of the pack in producing lipsticks with the ultimate wear and colour.

On the whole,¬†this collection is¬†the bomb, which is also mainly why I persisted in doing a review on it in spite that it was launched nearly a year ago. Not only are the lipsticks super pigmented and creamy, the colours are also mostly workplace-appropriate.¬†These colours are timeless as well, and can be recycled for the spring and fall seasons (if you know how to adjust¬†the intensity). If you haven’t gotten anything from this collection yet, you should! ūüėČ I would say this is one of the better collections from¬†M.A.C so trust me, you won’t regret your decision.

REVIEW: Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipsticks ‚Äď Virginity, Queen Bee, Nude Beach, Watermelon Soda & 714

Hello everyone!

Jeffree Star is no stranger to controversy, having been very vocal about his opinions on his social media accounts. Perhaps his forthrightness Рon top of his talent in makeup artistry and music Рwas what propelled him to superstar status on the internet. Despite his popularity, he holds no reservations in publicly ridiculing other high-profile celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, whom he lashed out for the poor quality of her lip gloss applicator when they first came out so very naturally, he was regarded as the voice for the beauty community whose passion for make-up has so often been taken advantage of by big beauty brands.

But things can get even¬†uglier¬†when the tables are turned. Not long after the whole Kylie Cosmetics hooha, Jeffree Star found himself embroiled¬†in a yet another feud, but this time with former BFF Kat Von D, just a few days shy of the release of his summer collection last July. With his credibility undoubtedly affected by Kat Von D’s claims of plagiarism claims against him, his Velour Liquid Lipstick sales took a hit despite all the hype around them on Instagram in the weeks leading up to the launch, thereby prompting Jeffree Star to remove the limit on the number of lipsticks each customer can purchase. Beautylish (an authorised Jeffree Star vendor) had to also slash the price of the bundle in half¬†Labour Day to get them to move.

But were people shunning the summer collection solely because of the scandal? Or were there other underlying reasons such as poor quality control that led to such drastic sales decline? Seeing that not a single shade was sold out one week into the launch, I bought the bundle to test the lipsticks out for myself.

And yes, I paid full price with shipping for this. If only I had sat on buying the bundle a little longer… *sigh*

Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick Summer Collection 2016

Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick Summer Collection 2016

Aptly wrapped in eye-catching yellow packaging and infused with a refreshing watermelon scent to remind you of¬†the popular summer punch, the theme of this collection is unmistakable. It stands out from the multitude of summer-themed collections in the market (go Google “makeup summer collection” and you will know what I mean) simply because the five shades picked out exclusively for this line are¬†finally¬†not of the same ol’ pink and coral hues… *yawn*

Here, I see a bold yellow as striking as the sun, a vibrant beige as inviting as sandy beaches and a violet like the colour of perennials that bloom even more brilliantly in summer. These shades are oh-so-relevant to the season!

Virginity is described as a soft lilac but dries down completely to a pale purple with slight grey undertone matte. It runs smoothly on the lips and it is sufficiently pigmented to give an opaque finish in a single swipe. The texture feels powdery and drying so it cracks instantly upon movement of the lips. The cracks are more visible on dry lips so lip exfoliation is a must.

Don’t fancy getting roasted under the hot sun but yearn to be tan? Well, this shade is¬†able to help to a certain extent as it makes the skin appear tanner.

While some of the colours in this collection may not be suitable for everyday wear alone, they can be mixed¬†with other lipsticks¬†to create customised colours. As liberal as I am, I am certainly not ready to parade the town in unusually bright¬†lipstick colours just yet, and I am one of the lazy sort who can’t be bothered to tailor-make my make-up. So what do I do with my unconventional lipstick shades? I use them to create lip art!

The whole lip art experience proved to be a lot more fun than I thought.

I spent close to 30 minutes on this one. And to think that I said I was lazy. Hmm.

Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick in Queen Bee

Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick in Queen Bee

Queen Bee¬†is the first yellow liquid lipstick in the market, as claimed by Jeffree Star. It is a vibrant canary yellow upon application but¬†becomes¬†one tone lighter when it dries down. This shade was my main deciding factor in getting the summer bundle (as buying just one product would not justify paying for the shipping fee) because, as common as this colour seems for apparels and household products, yellow lipsticks with this¬†degree of pigmentation and vibrancy is virtually unheard of. Furthermore, I didn’t have a yellow liquid lipstick in my stash so this would be a perfect addition to¬†my spectrum of liquid lipstick colours.

Packed a powerful punch¬†in the colour department, Queen Bee is exactly what you see in pictures, except that it appears streakier and less consistent in coverage than expected.¬†The fresher coats of lipstick can easily be told apart from the older ones because they don’t blend well together, resulting in those unsightly horizontal strokes as seen in the above lip swatches. Therefore, the first application has to be absolutely even¬†for the payoff to be uniform. The finish isn’t entirely opaque as some parts of my natural lip colour can still be seen peeking through the lipstick. It feels a little drying and leaves a tacky finish when dried down.

I immediately thought of doing a Pikachu lip art the moment I saw swatches of Queen Bee before it was even launched

Besides creating lip art, Queen Bee can also be used with pink and red liquid lipsticks to create a sunset lip ombr√©, something like Laneige’s Juicy Pop but more vivid and in liquid lipstick form.

Despite all the flaws mentioned, I¬†think Queen Bee deserves a permanent spot in¬†Jeffree Star’s lipstick lineup just because yellow liquid lipsticks are¬†a rare find.

Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick in Nude Beach

Nude Beach is¬†Jeffree Star’s rendition of macaroni and cheese nude, a pale peach matte. This is the only shade which I notice dries down to the exact colour as the product in the tube. But like most light-coloured liquid lipsticks, one swipe of Nude Beach is not opaque enough to mask the natural colour of the lips. It does not apply evenly and¬†the texture is too runny to be able to stay in place when I try to add more coats of the lipstick. Furthermore, I’m not impressed with the streaky texture and tacky finish (even after leaving it to dry). Instead of hugging the lips¬†like a second skin, the lipstick feels like a¬†burdensome layer of paint which I very much look forward to remove every time.

Echoing what Jeffree Star said in his introductory video, however, this is one¬†of the few light¬†shades which works for every skin tone due to¬†its gorgeous warm undertone that prevents it¬†from washing the palest skin out while making lips on dark skin tone “pop” in a flattering way. I personally feel it complements Asian skin tone the¬†most. Really too bad for the poor quality.

Since watermelons are one of the iconic fruits of summer, it makes perfect sense to dedicate a liquid lipstick from the summer line to the red and green fruit! Fittingly named Watermelon Soda, this rich salmon-toned coral not only resembles the colour of the juicy red watermelon flesh but also smells like the taste of it (yeah, just like the other lipsticks in this collection but this just feels more appropriate, you get what I mean?).

It applies smoothly on the lips and lends a fairly pigmented finish with some negligible patchiness quite unnoticeable from a distance. It dries to a soft reddish-pink matte that does not suck every ounce of moisture from the lips. It is prone to transfers as it still feels slightly tacky after several minutes of wear.

Named after the area code of Orange County in California where Jeffree Star was born, 714 was first launched in 2015 but was quickly discontinued after several complaints about the formula¬†surfaced.¬†It was said to be poorly formulated¬†and extremely blotchy. But as the saying goes, ‘One man’s meat is another man’s poison’ – while there were critics¬†who thought 714 was the “worst lip product” they had ever come across, there were also hardcore fans who swore by it. After 714 was taken off the shelves, resale prices for this prized lipstick rocketed and people were pleading Jeffree Star to bring it back.

Fast forward one year, this coral-toned pink made a comeback in a different packaging but the formula remains as horrendous as when it first came out. It has poor colour payoff and the runny and streaky texture means that it would be impossible to distribute the lipstick evenly on the lips. The lipstick budges and does not seem to dry down completely, making it a whole lot more difficult to build. It is tacky and very prone to transfers. The only good out of this substandard liquid lipstick formula is probably its lightweight. This lipstick is so bad, it deserves to be shelved forever.

Jeffree Star Watermelon Soda and 714 swatch comparison

714 is the only shade in this collection not infused with watermelon scent (as Jeffree Star explained that adding fragrance would change the colour of the lipstick).

All in all, the summer collection was a huge letdown mainly because all the lipsticks are of light shades and as many of you know, light lipstick shades often turn out to be streaky. Nonetheless, this is not what I would expect from a perfectionist who has no qualms about calling labels out over quality issues. He clearly knew about all these issues (since he had talked about them in his videos), but had still gone ahead with production. Things are always easier said than done, huh?

What say you? Chime away in the comments below!

REVIEW: MAC Wash and Dry Lipsticks and Lipglass – Steam Heat, Tumble Dry & Domestic Diva

Hey everyone!

MAC Wash and Dry for Summer 2015

mac-wash-and-dry-9

Is that you, Cara Delevingne??

I’ve been splurging a lot on lipsticks recently,¬†no thanks to MAC’s incessant release of new collections. And I admit that it has gotten¬†more out of hand due to the¬†stunning packaging MAC has come up with lately. Like many girls, I have a soft spot for nice packaging so it’s extremely¬†easy to strike my fancy when it comes to makeup. A differently-designed packaging (from the regular) is all it takes to make me go gaga over the product. But¬†it’s a¬†very expensive obsession¬†because¬†the more elaborate the wrapping material¬†it¬†is, the deeper I would have to dig into my pocket. And this is driving me closer and closer to bankruptcy!

*sigh*¬†And just when I’m about to give my wallet a break, MAC had to launch the most vibrant-looking¬†limited-edition lipsticks ever.

MAC Wash and Dry:¬†AREN’T THEY GORGEOUS?

SAMSUNG CSC

Gotta get something from this collection!

Many of my friends who aren’t as crazy as me about makeup were also blown away by the¬†striking packaging. The yellow, orange and turquoise ombr√© is just so apt for the summer. I also love that it’s made of reflective material, making the product look really sleek and expensive in general¬†(when¬†it’s only US$20 per¬†lipstick!).

But unfortunately, not all of the lipstick shades are brand new here. In fact, 2 of them are already in the permanent range. Despite the repeats and marked up price, I know some diehard MAC fans would still be very eager to purchase them because of the packaging.

Besides lipsticks and lipglass, this collection also boasts a wide array of products such as the Wash and Dry Veluxe Pearlfusion Shadow Trio (in 3 colour options – Warm Wash, Permanent Press & Green Clean), Technakohl Liner (in Colour Matters, Sudsy, Coin Operated & Practice Makes Perfect), False Lashes Waterproof (in Stay Black!), Powder Blush (in Crisp Whites & Hipness), Highlight Powder (in Freshen Up) and Studio Nail Lacquer (in Monday Blues & Washeteria). Click here for more details.

That’s not all. Fluid Brow Gelcreme (in Ash Blonde, Redhead, Dirty Blonde, True Brunette & Deep Dark Brunette), Eye Brow pencils (in Delineated, Accentuated, Tapered & Stylized), Brow Set (in Clear), Pro Longwear Waterproof Brow Set (in Emphatically Blonde, Toasted Blonde, Red Chestnut, Quiet Brunette, Bold Brunette & Brown Ebony), Bronzing Powder (in Refined Golden & Matte Bronze), Studio Sculpt Defining Bronzing Powder (in Delicates & Golden Rinse), Face Brushes (125 & 126) and makeup bag are available under The Modern Brow collection.

Call me a natural actor¬†but I’m amazed how I could still smile so warmly wearing this shade¬†despite¬†not¬†liking¬†it at all.¬†I think the reason is quite obvious from the pictures. It leaves unsightly clumps on the driest part of my lower lips and the colour totally disappears upon application. It’s so bad, it reminded me of my rant on Highlights. Actually, come to think of it now, they do¬†look quite similar.

I¬†had rather high expectations for this¬†since¬†none of my corals have failed me (as far as I can remember).¬†Plus, the finish isn’t stated for all the lipsticks on the website so I didn’t know it was Lustre until I received the items (thus adding to my dissatisfaction with this purchase).

Essentially,¬†this¬†has a pretty bullet but disappointing payoff. What a shame! I wouldn’t recommend buying this shade at all.

This is easily one of the dupe-able reds by MAC but leaving that aside, I find that it has fantastic consistency and pigmentation which allowed me to line my lips with it perfectly. It has a Satin finish so it’s not too matte nor shiny – just fabulous.¬†Its¬†smooth and velvety texture leaves a long-lasting opaque coverage over the lips and most importantly, it doesn’t feather nor dry out my lips over time. With its great payoff and lovely packaging, this definitely scores high point on my lipstick coolometer –¬†just¬†a few points shy of hitting maximum due to it’s not-so-novel colour.

Normally after carting out my desired lipstick shades I would have exited the page and resumed my previous activity. But somehow¬†that didn’t happen on that day of launch. I wandered off to another place within the same webpage and unwittingly bought a lipglass… when I’m not the sort of person who wears lip gloss. Darn, it must be the packaging, silently hynotising me and making me spend more. Never mind, that’s when Carousell comes in handy, right?

Okay, this is weird but… I actually liked it?

I hated lip gloss because it’d always leaves a really thin uneven layer on my lips regardless of the amount I apply and it wears off quicker than anything else. I disliked the hassle of reapplying and¬†I came to a point where I stopped applying lip gloss altogether. But this is gonna¬†reverse my decision. Can you see the (relatively) thick layer of gloss on my lips and the evenly spread-out glitter? That was achieved with just a SINGLE¬†layer. And the gloss actually felt pretty adhesive! Look, it even gave me pouty lips!

Now I don’t know if I should keep this :\
