2D1N Stay at Batam (deal.com.sg)

Hello everyone!

School is reopening in less than a month’s time. Unlike previous years, I didn’t go to anywhere far for vacation but I actually went overseas twice. Like, literally crossing international waters twice. Both weren’t as enjoyable as my other trips but what set them apart from my other travels was the presence of my family. Believe it or not, this is actually our first proper overseas trip (not counting the cruise vacation) together in more than a decade! And I really treasure the time we spend together as a family 🙂

Anyway, those with eidetic memory will recall how much I hated travelling to Batam in my first Batam post. The aversion never left me but my Mom was dying to escape to another nearby country (except Malaysia) thus she dismissed my refusal to go -_- Dad used to work in Batam for a few years and he said he could bring us around. Feeling super excited, my Mom started searching for cheap Batam package deals and eventually bought this from deal.com.sg.

Each coupon cost $40 with a one-hour massage and $30 without (not inclusive of S$20 fuel surchage and Batam terminal fee of Rp65,000 per person). Both came with a tour package. Boyfriend tagged along this time (finally got his passport renewed) so we utilised five coupons in total.

I’m totally against buying travel packages through deal sites but I didn’t want to go through the hassle of booking the hotel and looking for cheap massage parlour myself. Furthermore we only decided on our trip TWO days before our departure so I didn’t have the time to plan the itinerary (indecisiveness is in our blood apparently). I succumbed to my laziness in the end and got the merchant (Royal Prince Travel) to do everything for us. Apart from the small hiccup with the hotel booking (agency got our names wrong – but that was settled in a jiffy), the redemption process went really smooth. So kudos to Royal Prince Travel for their flexibility and efficiency!

Both our arrival and departure venues in Batam was at Sekupang Ferry Terminal. Our ferries (Pacific Ferry) were very clean and equipped with a reasonably large plasma TV with zero screen disruption. Everything looked sparkling new so I guess it must be a new company haha.

We were picked up by someone at the arrival hall but were told to stay put because he was still waiting for the next 2 ferries to arrive -_- So we spent our time idling in the cafe at the ferry terminal until a 7-seater van came for us.

Day 1

Our accommodation was at the newly built Hotel 01 which claims to be the only themed hotel in Batam.

Building exterior. Quite impressive to be honest.

However looks can be really deceiving – Hotel 01 did give that Egyptian vibes on the outside but it was nowhere near the theme when we stepped into our room.

The room doors are not locked with a keycard..

batam2014-13

But with this.

Boyfriend and I requested for a room change twice. The first was because we were given a queen-sized bed (*cough*parents’ paranoia*cough*) and the second was due to an unbearable sewage stench from the room’s toilet. We eventually took back our original room because there were no other rooms available. We then did a swap with my parents who were occupying a twin room with an extra bed for my sister. It was also a huge mistake, as there was zilch Wi-Fi reception in that room (in fact all rooms with number 30X along that row have no WiFi reception. Only rooms 313, 314 and those near them have the strongest Wi-Fi connection) and we even encountered a cockroach on our first and only night there! Holy crap, that’s a first for me.

One of the bath towels and comforters were also stained with shoe prints. Oh gosh, please let me pull through this one agonising night, please.

But I must say, the lady at the hotel reception was really nice and obliging. I was half-expecting her to be annoyed at our demands but she never did.

I also had to call the concierge to loan a hairdryer because it was not provided in the room. Other toilet essentials like toothbrush, toothpaste (no shaver and comb) and soap were provided though. TV reception was sucky.. No channel (not sure about their own broadcast stations coz we only watched movie channels) gave a clear image.

The first day was free-and-easy for us so we did a little shopping at Nagoya Hills Shopping Mall. Got our A&W craving satisfied and bought 6 big packets of sanitary pads HAHAHA Seriously, the sanitary pads (suitable for extremely heavy flow – 35cm in length – lol I’m so specific) were SO CHEEEEEAAAP like what, S$1.30 for a packet of 16?! If I could clear the shelf, I totally would!

We had dinner at Golden Prawn 933. Dad was probably in a severe state of seafood deprivation that he ordered mini prawns, Mantis Prawns and FOUR crabs (cooked in both black pepper and chilli). I only wanted my Gong Gongs.

batam2014-22

What a spread!!

batam2014-20

My lovely Gong Gongs

batam2014-21

5 scary-looking Mantis Prawns. The meat is VERY different from the usual prawns. This is definitely more chewy and thick. To eat, remove the top shell. If it’s fresh, you should be able to peel it off quite smoothly.

Total bill came up to Rp1,472,000 (approximately S$160) WHAAATTT okay I kinda expected that anyway. For the amount of seafood we ordered, S$35 per person is actually quite cheap. If we were in Singapore, our bill could easily amount up to S$200 odd. BUT my heart still ached for that amount of money… 😥

Day 2

Breakfast, although with very limited selection, was pretty pleasant. Apart from bread, they served noodles and rice along with 2 other side dishes. I actually ate a second helping of the noodles. Thus if you’re like me, who eats better with lesser variety, this hotel breakfast should work fine for you.

batam2014-11

Noodles and fried chicken (it was really tough)

batam2014-12

Sausage and potato slices in ketchup, and fried rice

batam2014-9

Hot tea and a toaster for your bread. There’s also orange juice on the extreme left side of the table

batam2014-10

Bread and some keropok

Our tour guide was scheduled to arrive between 9am to 10am Batam Time so we checked out of our rooms at around 9.30am. However his arrival was delayed (due to some problems with the Burmese tourists’ passports) so our tour started a tad later as well. The tour guide was sincerely apologetic.

Our first stop was at a chocolate factory. Don’t expect too much of it as it’s just another outlet to fleece tourists lol. What they have there, we have it here at our supermarkets as well at a much cheaper price.

batam2014-6

Only took a picture with their Chocolate mascot.

We also went to a local product shop which sold equally expensive snacks, a Batik outlet, a temple which only my father went while the rest of us stayed in the bus, and one of their very popular Polo Ralph Lauren outlets. Polo Ralph Lauren had a sale section and I almost bought a female slim fit top for S$35 but I kept telling myself that those were all replicas (how true is this, I’m not sure) and resisted my temptation to splurge!

batam2014-28

Saw some dogs living in poor conditions opposite the Ralph Lauren store. One dog was let out and we were busy playing with it before entering the store.

Visting a Kueh Lapis factory (Best Layers Kueh Lapis – it has small makeshift stalls at certain Batam shopping malls) was also part of the itinerary. My parents bought a truckload of cakes impossible to finish in a week and boyfriend got himself a honey cake and 10 pieces of Tau Sar Piah for me! Yay ❤

Then we were brought to a place to watch a culture show and to shoot glass bottles with pellet guns.

batam2014-5

Culture show: man eating burning stuff

batam2014-4

Culture show: man leaping through a ring of fire

batam2014-3

Shooting activity: blanks (2 sets for S$12 I think)

batam2014-2

Shooting activity: me in action. Managed to hit one glass bottle at my first attempt

batam2014-1

Shooting activity: all the glass bottles!

We had our Indo buffet lunch at Restaurant Sari Bumbu. Due to the fasting season for Muslims, everywhere on the streets was quiet. We were the only patrons of the restaurant but actually the food was not bad! I love their soup especially!

batam2014-34

Restaurant entrance

batam2014-30

The soup I’m talking about! Must try if you ever go there!

batam2014-29

Some pasta for you

batam2014-31

I think this is beef?

batam2014-32

The best. FRIED FISH SLICES!

batam2014-33

Uhmmmm, can’t remember what this is. Most likely fried chicken.

Before we headed for our massage, we visited First Factory Outlet. I believe most of the stuff there are imitations because the prices are too good to be true. But sigh, I still couldn’t resist a bargain. Got myself a Barcelona FC jersey for S$25.

batam2014-25

Ignore the cap as it’s there to hide my ugly hanger hook

Full-body massage at First Choice was mediocre as I didn’t get a satisfactory amount of “bone cracking”. Boyfriend’s experience was worse as he didn’t get any cracks and he left feeling uncomfortable all over. My Mom on the other hand was silently enduring all the pain – not the masseuse’s fault though because my shy Mom chose to keep mum -_- Having said that, my Dad enjoyed his massage so there you go, mixed responses about the massage parlour. I guess if you don’t go for massage sessions regularly, you’ll have lower expectations and this place should be okay for you.

We ended our Batam getaway with another shopping trip to Batam City Square Mall. Boyfriend and I didn’t shop much and we tried to spend our last few Rupiahs at the arcade because according to my tour guide, the Rupiah notes expire every few years (But Wikipedia and other credible sites tell me something else, that only the 1998-1999 notes are no longer legal tender, so it’s up to your discretion). To play we had to buy some game credits at Rp100,000 (approx. S$11) and on average each game station requires Rp2800 (approx. S$0.30). We spent most of our credits on their claw vending machines (as always) and bagged 2 plush toys home. Hehe!

BCS

BCS (that’s my friendly tour guide in white standing in the middle smiling and posing for the camera)

All in all, this Batam trip was not that bad despite the unpleasant experience in our hotel room, probably because it was a shorter stay this time. My Mom doesn’t mind a second trip to Batam (oh snap) so yeah…. I can’t promise that I won’t be back there again.

2D1N Cruise with Leisure World (deal.com.sg)

Hey everyone! How d’ya like my frequent updates? 😀

I just got back from a very short getaway with my family. Our holiday lasted less than 24 hours on a cruise. It was a suggested idea by my Mom who is so hooked on deal sites like Groupon and Deal that we’ve been using dining coupons to pay for our meals nowadays. One day she saw an attractive travel deal on Deal and decided to coerce me into going as she wouldn’t go if I don’t. I refused at first because I never trusted such sites (gimmicks aplenty) and even more so for travel deals as I’ve seen too many poor feedback about it on forums. But seeing how eager my Mom was in addition to her not travelling for the past 2 decades, I agreed to tag along after reading through the terms and conditions for the umpteenth time.

The deal was $13 per person for an overnight stay on-board MV Leisure World. Included in the offer were World Cup Live Screening (big deal in Singapore coz we gotta pay to watch it) and meals, and if we purchased 3 tickets, we would also be entitled to a complimentary cabin (worth S$40) for 3. All these for just $13 nett. It’s no doubt a very tempting deal! Boyfriend wanted to go as well as he was enticed by the cheap foot reflexology (S$15 for 60 minutes WHUTTTT) there so I bought 6 tickets (for my family of 4 and himself, plus 1 extra to get one more free cabin – strategic) but his passport renewal application was rejected at the very last minute due to a very stupid reason so 2 tickets went to waste *sigh*

But deals being deals, there were some drawbacks to the seemingly good offer. We could not travel on Friday and Saturday. On top of that, we had to depart from Singapore via the last ferry (8.30pm) from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal and take any return ferry scheduled before 5pm on the following day lest we’d incur an extension fee of $20 per person. It says 2D1N on the header but the trip doesn’t even last a day! So do take note of such gimmicky ad text when buying travel coupons especially 🙂

Anyway after purchasing the coupons, I had people telling me that the ship (MV Leisure World) we were boarding was a GAMBLING SHIP (read news reports here). Argh, I should’ve checked thoroughly before purchasing. It was too late to regret now since such coupon sites don’t do refunds but I definitely lowered my expectations a lot.

Booking was done in a breeze via emailing and calling (to confirm receipt). Everything was done and confirmed within 2 days – 1 if not for the hiccup in boyfriend’s passport – even though the agency (New Century Tours) sounded like in a state of mess when I called (loud background noises that sounded like MRT announcements O_O so loud that I couldn’t hear the person on the other end of the line at times). But still, their efficiency and professionalism are commendable.

lsw0

My getup and look for the casino (virtually touched up my messy hair).. then found myself too overdressed when I got there -_- Everyone else was in shirt and shorts. Love my lippy here by the way! It’s MAC’s Diva.

Our trip was just yesterday and we had to be there at least an hour before the stated departure time. We had light dinner even though we would be just in time for supper buffet when we arrived at the cruise.

lsw5

lsw4

Boarding pass for Leisure World and Transit Pass for ferry transfer.

Boarding gates opened at 7.30pm and the departure hall was PACKED with people of all ages and races! I was surprised coz I thought I saw somewhere on the terms and conditions that only people aged 18 years old and above are allowed on board, and that food served there are non-halal.. which left us only with a certain demographic group right?

The ferry from Tanah Merah was horrible. Everyone was like rushing to board because there were limited seats available. Be prepared to stand if you aren’t fast enough (we stood on our return journey). Upon arrival at Nongsapura Ferry Terminal, we transferred to our second ferry to MV Leisure World, a stationary cruisevessel near Batam. The entire journey took less than 1.5 hours.

Immediately after we alighted from our second ferry, we went to surrender our passports to the embarkation counter. The interior of the ship definitely didn’t look modern to me as everything was in dull shimmery gold.

lsw35

Cabin keys

While I queued for our cabin keys (super long queue omg), my parents went to the dining room on the fifth level to get supper.

lsw6

lsw1

Porridge for supper! How apt. (and spot the woman in tudung in the background. There’s probably halal/Muslim-friendly food after all!)

lsw3

What my elders took – fried prawns (??) which were cold and soggy, fried fish that were not too bad, some bitter gourd and preserved veg which my Dad commented that it tasted a little sour O_O

lsw2

Checked into our little cabin after we were done with supper. Can you imagine 4 grown-ups squeezing into this pigeonhole? Lol. Yes, this room is meant for 3 but slim people. I didn’t have a good night sleep because it was so cramped! So thankfully it was only AN OVERNIGHT stay!!

lsw9

We messed up the bed of course

lsw19

Closer view of the small sleeping area

lsw20

The wall-mounted bed. There’s a lever at the side to bring it down or up.

I slept with my Mom and sister while Dad slept on the wall-mounted bed. I’d get really paranoid about the bed giving way and falling onto our bed underneath when my Dad was up there (although he isn’t exactly fat) so I slept cross-legged HAHAHA The creaking sound of bed when he moved really put me off :\

If you think the sleeping area is small, wait til you see the toilet.

lsw10

The reflection of the door on the mirror gives you an idea how small the toilet is. The door is really close to the toilet bowl!

lsw11

Yup, that’s where we’re supposed to bathe.

The door is so narrow that we didn’t even see it there at first (even mistook it for a wardrobe). It’s a restroom so tiny that even Chubs, my dog, would feel claustrophobic in. But yeah, having said so, it’s still possible to shower and do your businesses in there even though none of us showered during our stay 😀 But shower if you really, really need to!

Our phones were dying but we couldn’t charge them coz our powerhead pins weren’t compatible with the holes on their sockets -_- Forgot to bring international adapter. Didn’t expect it to be different anyway coz since Leisure World is home-ported in Singapore and everything sold there is in Singapore currency, I’d assume that they’d use our socket too right? -_-

And by the way, no Wi-Fi anywhere there. There is an internet station with 2 computers near the reception counter but it’s erm, too open? Like anyone could see what you’re doing on the big computer screen when they walk past. I know coz I saw someone trying to key in her PIN number on the DBS iBanking page -_-

Leisure World Cruise facilities

Leisure World Cruise facilities

After putting all our baggage in the room, we went out to explore other decks. I know Dad was more interested in watching the World Cup, but he still accompanied us to the karaoke lounge because that was the only activity available that hour besides playing jackpot. The microphones went from table to table and each table could only sing 2 songs at a time. We did a total of 6 English oldies! 😀 The lounge closes at 2.30am though, and above it was an open space for Mahjong. I seriously wonder how the players could hear one another when the karaoke music was so LOUD!!

lsw31

Tropicana Karaoke Lounge. Spiral stairs to Mahjong zone.

lsw30

The free live screening of the World Cup was at Treasure Cove sports bar but we didn’t go there at all. Dad caught a glimpse of the Belgium vs Russia match on a small TV at the karaoke lounge 🙂

lsw32

Basketball court outside the karaoke lounge

After that we went to play the slot machine in one of the many casinos there. The minimum age to enter is 18 and there isn’t any entry levy but you’d need to pay a S$10 deposit (refundable) in order to get this prepaid gaming card for the slots. Even though there’s an attire for the casino, no one stopped me when I was in shorts :\

lsw34

All the ah ma and ah gong spending their life savings on slot machines… *shakes head*

lsw33

Not supposed to take pictures but I’ll take a few for keepsake hehe.

There were just too many slot machines there, probably the only thing they have in their casino. I didn’t see any proper gambling den. C’mon, how can a renowned gambling ship only have slot machines? O_O Did I miss anything??

lsw8

Slot machines for people who like endearing stuff like my Mom and I. Kept spending our money on dog-themed machines HAHA SO CUTE RIGHT

lsw7

One more!!! My mom won 12 free games. At one point she actually won some money. Then she got addicted and lost every single cent -_- I’m never letting her step into a casino ever again.

Stopped playing after we lost our initial capital of S$20 HAHAHA. Gambling isn’t my thing, really… I can even get sick of playing Blackjack during CNY. And I like playing Mahjong without money involved! *good role model* Hahahaha!

Woke up at 8.30am the next day to have breakfast at the same dining room. It was alright but not much variety to choose from. They don’t really serve iced beverage I realised.. only plain water. It’s also the first breakfast buffet for me that served half-boiled eggs.

lsw29

lsw28

Gotta peing/toast them yourself. Mine ended up BURNT! Fail.

lsw27

Different condiments to go with your bread: jam, butter, kaya and peanut butter.

lsw25

I went down to book our return ferry after I was done with my meal. I had 3 departure timing to choose from: 12.30pm, 2.45pm and 5.00pm. Any time after that would be considered as an extended stay which would be chargeable at S$20 per person. Initially we wanted to leave at 5pm but our cabin check-out time was 12pm and there was really nothing much to do there (as you can see), so we brought our departure time forward to 2.45pm. After we returned our keys, I kinda regretted not opting for the 12.30pm one :\

ferryschedule

lsw21

REALLY nothing to do there (unless you’re a heavy gambler) coz many facilities are closed in the day. I wanted to go for a 1-hour full body massage but there was only ONE masseuse available (the other was on leave) and all the slots before my departure were fully booked. Yes, you gotta make reservation for massage! Shucks, I agreed to go on the cruise because of the cheap massage leh!!! 😦 So no review on the massage if you’re expecting one..

lsw18

Went to explore the upper deck. Very nice view up there! The scorching sun was very suitable for sun tanning (not sure if this is allowed though! 😀 )

lsw17

Mega loveeee this picture! Taken from the upper deck.

What did I do then? I spent my next 1 hour sleeping on the restaurant’s dining table. Lol unglam max but no one knew me there so never mind.

We had our lunch there as well. Okay come to think of it, S$13 for 3 meals is not too bad. But I wasn’t really enjoying the food :\

lsw12

I boiled the Yong Tau Foo for my Mom. Not sure how long it takes to cook so I followed the person next to me! Took them out of the boiler when he did hahaha. Mom liked the Yong Tau Foo.

lsw13

Where is my fishball?? How can Yong Tau Foo not have fishball 😦

lsw14

Repeated food choices from supper last night..

lsw15

Chap cai peng for you?

lsw16

I only had fried rice for lunch.

All in all, the cruise isn’t as shady as I thought it would be and you’d probably find it acceptable with lowered expectations, seriously. It’s mai hiam buay pai, don’t expect much for just S$13. I can say for sure that my Mom liked it though. But that’s probably because she hadn’t travelled for a long time so she’d love anywhere she went. Another reason for not liking this cruise as much is because smokers are allowed to smoke anywhere. It’s heaven for my smoker Dad but hell for people like me who are allergic to cigarette smoke (I’m asthmatic). Plus, they stink my hair!! 😡

Service-wise, staff at the restaurant and casinos were exceptionally friendly and ever-willing to lend a helping hand when needed. But still, I wouldn’t want to stay for more than a night there due to the lack of entertainment for non-punters like myself which is understandable coz it’s a gambling ship after all.. But at least give me Wi-Fi man 😦 I could coop myself up in the pathetic cabin all day with that.

But if I HAVE to go there again, I’d blow my money on a full-day massage 😀 You can’t deny the affordability of the massage there. Teehee!

That’s all for this travelogue…. if you consider this as one. Hahaha.

Thanks for reading ❤

P/S: If anyone’s keen to purchase from me the extra pair of tickets, please drop me a message at askme@fionaseah.com! They are valid until 14 July (last day of the World Cup). SOLD! Thanks everyone 🙂

Revisiting Taiwan, the Land of Smiles (PART 2)

Oops, sorry my break turned out to be longer than planned. Hehe anyways, welcome back! Here goes part II of my 9-day Taiwan trip 🙂

* * DAY 5 * *

This day we embarked on our proper tour around Taipei because we had engaged, through the hotel, a private driver to bring us to popular tourist destinations for just NT$3000 (exclusive of NT$200 hotel service charge). It was New Year’s Eve and we wanted to 放天燈 (light sky lanterns) at Pingxi, which was one of the places on the itinerary.

Before that, we had breakfast at our hotel for the very first time!

Breakfast spread

Breakfast spread.. Not much variety. OK to give it a miss 🙂

Enough tables and chairs for all!

Enough tables and chairs for all!

Our driver for the tour was 杨先生 (Mr Yang) but we called him 杨师傅 (Master Yang :P). He drives a cab but he uses the vehicle to drive tourists around the country. He is also an excellent tour guide who really takes great care of his customers. For the entire time he kept feeding us with Taiwanese food LOL. You won’t need to take selfies on your own because he is more than willing to help you with phototaking! Most of the time you won’t even need to ask. He’s very initiative and he understands his passengers really well.

His cab is AWESOME. It has everything you need for the long tour: charger (for any kinds of phone but it charges very slowly so bring your own if possible), WIFI and bottled water. If you require any assistance, he would try his best to help! He really is that fantastic!

Yangming Park

This wasn’t part of the itinerary but Master Yang brought us there since it’s along the way. Many pretty trees there! Other than that, nothing really fanciful except for the huge flower clock at the entrance. There’s probably more to see because we didn’t delve further into the park.

Here you are able to see post-volcanic activities such as the post-volcanic fumaroles, solfataras, hot springs and landslide landforms. Hot steam can be seen filtering from the ground and the inactive volcano. Master Yang did an experiment to show us how hot the steam was on the ground by pouring water on it. Bubbles formed immediately!

This place houses the famous “queen head” hoodoo stone. They have an artificial and the real one at different places of the park. It was crowded with tour groups from Hong Kong and China when we went there. Security guards patrolled around the park to ensure that no one attempted to destroy the rock formations by climbing/stepping on them to take pictures because some tourists just loved doing that, I don’t know why. If they were not taking pictures, they’d SIT on them. Walao, it’s a GEOPARK. Stop harming the natural landscape!!

Jinguashi / Gold Ecological Park (黃金博物園區)

Jinguashi is well-known for its historic gold and copper mines. It was also used as a prisoner-of-war camp during the Japanese occupation. Since resources have already depleted, there’s nothing much left to see. We only had 15 minutes to look around so we didn’t go further into the park.

Jiufen (九份)

FINALLY a shopping and snacking place! Master Yang treated us to several stuff there (we felt so bad and obliged to give him more tips HAHA) and he also recommended some snacks to us to bring back to Singapore. Many food stores there but most of them are priced higher than those at Raohe.

We're finally at Jiufen!

Last but not least, we went to the place where we could 放天燈 or light sky lanterns! It was at a high altitude (coz the car kept moving up non-stop and my ears popped) and on a railway track. We had been planning for this since our first trip to Taiwan last year so we were very excited to be there!

We opted for a huge sky lantern with colours that represent education, wealth, health and future. Our minds went blank when we were given the lantern so we turned to the guide beside us (pictured above) for inspiration.

Everyone had to leave the railway track when the train approached. I’m not sure how often trains come by but I only saw one train approaching when I was there so I guess the frequency isn’t very high.

Once we were done with our sky lanterns, we bought some fireworks to play with. What’s new year without fireworks? Hahaha!

Anyway before 杨师傅 drove us back to our hotel, he went to buy MORE food for us omg. He promised to fatten us up before we return to Singapore. He’s really a man of his words (noooooo…)

#21 Goose and Seafood Restaurant

This was a last minute addition to our itinerary as we only came across this while flipping through our Lonely Planet book in our hotel. I was a little wary about eating goose meat as I had never eaten one before. Sorry, unadventurous eater here. Hahaha.

We were greeted with an array of seafood and vegetables at the entrance. Orders were also taken before we were seated but you would still be given a menu when you’re inside.

Here’s what we binged on that night:

Fish! The most expensive dish on our table.

Not sure what kind of fish that was but it’s more expensive than what the restaurant is famous for. I would suggest not ordering this at all and just go all out on the goose meat! This fish came with white pepper salt dip which absolutely complemented each other.

A dish just to make us look like we're eating healthily.

I also forgot what kind of vegetables this was HAHA apologies for my poor memory. I was so guilt-ridden for eating unhealthily for the past few days so this was ordered to make myself feel better (and also coz I was suffering from constipation which ALWAYS happens when I’m overseas and boyfriend was suffocating from my fart lololol so hopefully veggies could make me poop). For the record, I dislike greens but this was rather nice so I managed to finish everything. YAY ME!

Goose meat was surprisingly GOOD!! It tasted like duck but more tender and juicy. After we were done with it, we went on to order another plate! Seriously damn nice can!!! Arghh I’m craving for it now!

Prawns.. oh-so-lazy to peel.

Prawns.. So lazy to peel 😦

Seriously, just order the goose meat and drop everything HAHAHA and maybe some greens if you cannot defecate like me 😛 Prawns, though fresh, were nothing to wow about. Or maybe… I’m just prejudiced because I had to peel them before I could eat them.

Close up! Very fresh though.

We paid no more than S$60 for the very satisfying dinner! They do not accept credit cards so do bring sufficient cash if you’re going to dine there.

We left our hotel pretty late that day and went to Xinbeitou for our hot spring session! We returned to the same place where we had our first hot spring the year before. Our regular private suites were fully booked so we chose the deluxe double room.

The light dinner at Tian Yue Quan Springs obviously wasn’t enough for us so we planned to eat street food at Tamsui to fill our tummies. However we didn’t know that it was also the day where the Taiwanese pray to the heavens. On such days, most shops are usually closed for the day. Thus, Tamsui was relatively quiet but we walked around to see if there were any Taiwanese titbits to buy for our folks back home.

We chanced upon this Hello Kitty-themed shop. Seriously, Taipei is like Japan – so crazy over the cat with no mouth LOL. There would be at least one Hello Kitty-themed shop in each area. We entered one of them and bought quite a handful of stuff!

After our purchase, we headed back to our hotel by cab. A nominal surcharge was imposed for boarding at Tamsui (can’t remember how much it was). It was a rather long distance, comparable to that of Pasir Ris to Jurong here 🙂 We put all hauls in the hotel and went for a foot massage, a daily activity for us in Taiwan!

Our massage ended past midnight and our tummies started rumbling so we asked one of the masseurs if there was any eatery still opened. He directed us to a 24-hour beef noodles stall just 2 roads away.

Fu Hong Beef Noodles (富宏牛肉麵)

Shop banner

It wasn’t difficult at all to spot the stall as it was the only one along the stretch of shops still operating at that hour. Its bustling crowd was also a sign of its popularity. Apparently the Taiwanese also like having supper like us. Hahaha!

We had the choice of skinny or fat noodles. We got ourselves a bowl with fat noodles to share because we were afraid that we wouldn’t like it but NO, it was as good as the one I had in Singapore (used to be at Lavender Food Square). Soup was orgasmic but a tad too oily which I think is common in any beef noodle soup. After awhile I kinda felt this disgusting bitter taste lingering around my throat, especially when I swallowed my saliva. If you had experienced it before you would understand what I mean :\

Nevertheless, I’d totally have it again if I’m near the area! But I’d opt for skinny noodles next time because fat noodles is such a mouthful.

Beef soup

Beef soup.. Just the soup.

Anyway the shop owner (also the one taking orders) probably knew that we were sharing because she gave us an additional bowl of soup with beef in it OMG (never charge extra some more) probably so that we didn’t have eat from the same bowl. It didn’t make sense for her to give us another bowl when we ordered the soup version, right? Plus, we looked around and didn’t see anybody having an extra bowl. Oh my God lor I was really touched by her kind gesture!!!! 台灣人,你們是最棒的! ! !我愛你們!!!

Taipei Zoo / Maokong (貓空)

Another sightseeing destination on our itinerary! Boyfriend was very reluctant to go because he had just gone to the Singapore Zoo. -_- I had to force him to go with me. The zoo is very accessible as compared to ours as it has its own metro station. After touring the zoo we planned to take the gondola lift to Maokong.

The usual price of the admission ticket was NT$60 but because I had the Youth Travel Card, I only had to pay NT$30! I had gotten the card during my first visit but never used it until now.

For NT$30, you’re able to see many different kinds of animal, including giant pandas. If you’re lazy like me, you can take the internal shuttle train to get to different parts of the zoo for only NT$5 (exact change). Boyfriend and I paid using Taiwan’s EZ-link card 😛 Almost everything in Taiwan can be paid by EZ-link card by the way which makes tourists’ lives even easier! Don’t have to figure out the value of each coin when paying -_-

We should have done it the other way round because by the time we left Maokong, it was already dark! -_- We saw nothing through the glass. It was pitch black most of the time. * * DAY 9 * *

Boyfriend and I woke up waaaaay before check-out time because our chauffeur-cum-tour guide promised to take us to the best (according to him) beef noodle stall in Taiwan before sending us to the airport. We were wondering if he would take us to the stall we went to on the night before. Hahaha!

However the chauffeur forgot about our appointment and had already taken up another sight-seeing tour. He was very apologetic and immediately arranged for another chauffeur to take over his job. Was quite upset at first because I could have slept longer…. But since he was so nice and sincere, I guess 算了啦 🙂

Lao Wang Ji Beef Noodles (老王記牛肉麵大王)

Surprisingly the “best beef noodles in Taiwan” is very near to Ximending! We had stayed there for 9 days but we never knew that we were surrounded with so many good food. Someone needs to compile a list of food recommendations in Ximending la.

We were at Lao Wang Ji at about 11am and there were already people eating inside! Our driver said that we were very lucky to have seats because this shop is always fully packed! True enough, all tables were almost occupied by the time we were about to leave. No photography of the entrance/open kitchen (non-strategically located by the road) is allowed for fear of (what I thought) recipe theft. However our driver added that because they are doing so well, they were actually afraid that people would go and create havoc and hence they try to be as low profile as possible. After all, Taiwan is also a country where triads flourish, right? That doesn’t make sense to me though. How to be low profile when you have such delish beef noodles huh!?!

I can’t remember if they had slim and fat noodles though but they had the option of spicy or non-spicy one. We went for the spicy one as recommended by our driver but we requested ours to be not too spicy.

Our verdict: definitely better than the one we had yesterday. What won our votes was the beef. They were cut in thick slices and yet so smooth, soft and tender which totally reminded me of the chasu in Ippudo’s tonkotsu ramen hahaha! LOVED IT. It was a great way to end our Taiwan trip and we certainly left with happy and satisfied tummies. Hehehe!
