EVENT: LINE Friends Pop-Up Store at 313@Somerset

MEDIA INVITE

Hey guys!

LINE in Singapore

Almost three years ago when I got my first smartphone (yes, I was probably the last person my age to own a smartphone then because… buttons for the win), I was so intrigued by mobile apps that I started downloading a whole slew of them on it. Messaging apps, of course, form an integral part of my phone usage (because for the first time ever, I didn’t have to pay for excessive messaging), even today. I had a few of them installed on my phone for different purposes but I only actively used two, one of which was LINE for its free voice calls (back then before WhatsApp introduced it) and wide selection of expressive stickers. The latter reminds me of the good ol’days of MSN Messenger when I would bombard the other party with lots of big emoticons. But the Japanese messaging app is different in the sense that its stickers feature popular cartoon characters from Disney, SpongeBob SquarePants and even my favourite Pokemon! To date, I think I’ve spent over S$8 on these premium LINE stickers alone ^_^” They’re just sooooo cute!

But that doesn’t leave frugal users, who are reluctant to pay, with nothing. There are also default stickers which are equally expressive and endearing. You’re bound to find something that accurately illustrates your mood among the pool of free stickers starring LINE’s mascots Moon, James, Cony and Brown (the only expressionless one hahaha but still adorbs, my favourite!)

By 2013, LINE became even more popular with over 120 million users (more than 400 million now) across the globe. Its mascots even have its own TV animated series in Japan (click here for episode 1! Please watch it’s damn funny), further proving how well-received the app is.

In 2014, as part of LINE’s efforts to bringing Singaporean closer to the ultimate LINE experience, it held its first ever pop-up store at Wisma Atria to roaring success, with as many as 100 people queuing up before its opening to be one of the lucky customers to walk away with free LINE mini doll worth S$14.

This year, if you haven’t heard already, the high-anticipated pop-up store is back again for the second time, at 313@Somerset. Located at the mall’s Atrium on Level 1, the pop-up store will run from 8 June to 15 July 2015 and will likewise have an extensive array of official LINE merchandise including exclusive collaboration items.

REVIEW: MAC Wash and Dry Lipsticks and Lipglass – Steam Heat, Tumble Dry & Domestic Diva

Hey everyone!

MAC Wash and Dry for Summer 2015

mac-wash-and-dry-9

Is that you, Cara Delevingne??

I’ve been splurging a lot on lipsticks recently, no thanks to MAC’s incessant release of new collections. And I admit that it has gotten more out of hand due to the stunning packaging MAC has come up with lately. Like many girls, I have a soft spot for nice packaging so it’s extremely easy to strike my fancy when it comes to makeup. A differently-designed packaging (from the regular) is all it takes to make me go gaga over the product. But it’s a very expensive obsession because the more elaborate the wrapping material it is, the deeper I would have to dig into my pocket. And this is driving me closer and closer to bankruptcy!

*sigh* And just when I’m about to give my wallet a break, MAC had to launch the most vibrant-looking limited-edition lipsticks ever.

MAC Wash and Dry: AREN’T THEY GORGEOUS?

SAMSUNG CSC

Gotta get something from this collection!

Many of my friends who aren’t as crazy as me about makeup were also blown away by the striking packaging. The yellow, orange and turquoise ombré is just so apt for the summer. I also love that it’s made of reflective material, making the product look really sleek and expensive in general (when it’s only US$20 per lipstick!).

But unfortunately, not all of the lipstick shades are brand new here. In fact, 2 of them are already in the permanent range. Despite the repeats and marked up price, I know some diehard MAC fans would still be very eager to purchase them because of the packaging.

Besides lipsticks and lipglass, this collection also boasts a wide array of products such as the Wash and Dry Veluxe Pearlfusion Shadow Trio (in 3 colour options – Warm Wash, Permanent Press & Green Clean), Technakohl Liner (in Colour Matters, Sudsy, Coin Operated & Practice Makes Perfect), False Lashes Waterproof (in Stay Black!), Powder Blush (in Crisp Whites & Hipness), Highlight Powder (in Freshen Up) and Studio Nail Lacquer (in Monday Blues & Washeteria). Click here for more details.

That’s not all. Fluid Brow Gelcreme (in Ash Blonde, Redhead, Dirty Blonde, True Brunette & Deep Dark Brunette), Eye Brow pencils (in Delineated, Accentuated, Tapered & Stylized), Brow Set (in Clear), Pro Longwear Waterproof Brow Set (in Emphatically Blonde, Toasted Blonde, Red Chestnut, Quiet Brunette, Bold Brunette & Brown Ebony), Bronzing Powder (in Refined Golden & Matte Bronze), Studio Sculpt Defining Bronzing Powder (in Delicates & Golden Rinse), Face Brushes (125 & 126) and makeup bag are available under The Modern Brow collection.

Out of the four lipstick shades in this collection, 2 are already permanent.

Call me a natural actor but I’m amazed how I could still smile so warmly wearing this shade despite not liking it at all. I think the reason is quite obvious from the pictures. It leaves unsightly clumps on the driest part of my lower lips and the colour totally disappears upon application. It’s so bad, it reminded me of my rant on Highlights. Actually, come to think of it now, they do look quite similar.

I had rather high expectations for this since none of my corals have failed me (as far as I can remember). Plus, the finish isn’t stated for all the lipsticks on the website so I didn’t know it was Lustre until I received the items (thus adding to my dissatisfaction with this purchase).

Essentially, this has a pretty bullet but disappointing payoff. What a shame! I wouldn’t recommend buying this shade at all.

This is easily one of the dupe-able reds by MAC but leaving that aside, I find that it has fantastic consistency and pigmentation which allowed me to line my lips with it perfectly. It has a Satin finish so it’s not too matte nor shiny – just fabulous. Its smooth and velvety texture leaves a long-lasting opaque coverage over the lips and most importantly, it doesn’t feather nor dry out my lips over time. With its great payoff and lovely packaging, this definitely scores high point on my lipstick coolometer – just a few points shy of hitting maximum due to it’s not-so-novel colour.

Normally after carting out my desired lipstick shades I would have exited the page and resumed my previous activity. But somehow that didn’t happen on that day of launch. I wandered off to another place within the same webpage and unwittingly bought a lipglass… when I’m not the sort of person who wears lip gloss. Darn, it must be the packaging, silently hynotising me and making me spend more. Never mind, that’s when Carousell comes in handy, right?

Okay, this is weird but… I actually liked it?

I hated lip gloss because it’d always leaves a really thin uneven layer on my lips regardless of the amount I apply and it wears off quicker than anything else. I disliked the hassle of reapplying and I came to a point where I stopped applying lip gloss altogether. But this is gonna reverse my decision. Can you see the (relatively) thick layer of gloss on my lips and the evenly spread-out glitter? That was achieved with just a SINGLE layer. And the gloss actually felt pretty adhesive! Look, it even gave me pouty lips!

Now I don’t know if I should keep this :\

What are your thoughts about this collection?

MAC Wash & Dry is now available on MACCosmetics.com and in local MAC stores for a limited time only.

Tai Lei Loi Kei 澳门大利来记猪扒包 @ nex

Hey everyone!

May has been a month of despair for the wallet because of all shopping and celebration expenses (Mom’s birthday and Mother’s Day) and it’s not going to get any better in June (no thanks to Father’s Day, boyfriend’s birthday, Chubs’ birthday and a friend’s wedding). To tide through this rather financially difficult period, boyfriend and I would have to scrimp and save on everything else including food, and that’s why we have been having home-cooked meals when we meet, or at budget eateries on certain days of the week. Since boyfriend lives in Serangoon, we would often go to nex for dinner.

Known as the largest mall in the north-east region of Singapore, nex (not poor grammar hor, the name of the mall is really stylized this way) first opened its doors in end 2010 to much fanfare and the delight of residents living on the other end of the purple MRT line. However, not all shops benefit from the surge of patrons obviously, as can be seen from the frequent change of tenants during just 4 years of its existence. But the mall recently underwent a major tenancy restructuring and brought in quite a number of well-known retailers and food establishments including one restaurant near the bus interchange. When it first opened we didn’t know it was popular and we even dismissed it as another fast food restaurant because its menu shows prominent pictures of burgers. Subsequently we kinda avoided that place (partly because it was always crowded) until 2 weeks ago when we couldn’t decide on an inexpensive place to eat. Looking through the menu again at the entrance, we came to realise that it was a restaurant from Macau called Tai Lei Loi Kei and it’s notable for its pork chop bun. It’s even endorsed by Hong Kong celebrities Nicholas Tse and Angelababy!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Opened in December 2014, this nex outlet is its first in Singapore.

We dined at Tai Lei Loi Kei on two separate occasions to try out different food on the menu. Here’s what we had:

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Bouncy Noodles with Chicken Wings (S$7.90)

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Really nice wings!

The noodles were just about the right springiness and texture (love the not-too-soft and not-too-hard kind of chewiness). Flavour was great with a tinge of sweetness. My egg came with runny yolk and the chicken wings were still crispy even after some time! I was quite surprised by the number of chicken wings in the bowl too because it’s akin to serving another a la carte dish (chicken wings on a la carte basis come in 6 pieces) – all for just S$7.90!  I mean like c’mon, even a plate of dry noodles with just luncheon meat and egg costs S$8.50++ at Xin Wang Cafe so this is undoubtedly an awesome deal man!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Signature Pork Chop Bun (S$6.90)

Boyfriend ordered this and I took a rather substantial bite out of it (hehe). The patty was a little tough and dry and the bun, though soft and fluffy, didn’t taste anything extraordinary to me. Beats me why this is their signature bun instead of the more delectable polo bun I got for myself.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Polo Pork Chop Bun (S$6.90)

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Thick pork patty!

The crust is so crispy and the bun on the overall is so (but not overly) sweet, I love it! I reckon they used the same kind of patty as the one in the normal bun but it somehow tastes less bland and more savoury here. Perhaps the sweetness of the polo bun instantly compensates for the blandness of the patty on the taste buds!

Crave for some desserts? Simply upgrade the above mains to a set for just S$3-S$5 (price varies for different combo) and you can enjoy a cup of hot/cold beverage and either of the following:

(A la carte prices are reflected in brackets)

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Sawdust Cake in Original and Milo (S$3.50 each)

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Sawdust Cake (Original) – fine crushed biscuits layered with whipped cream

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Sawdust Cake (Milo) – Milo powder layered with whipped cream

These Serradura, or “Sawdust” in Portuguese, are the only deserts available at the restaurant and are best eaten chilled. I ate only the powder and crush biscuits and avoided most of the whipped cream because that’s what girls on diet do 😛

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Our choice of drink: Hot (S$2.60) and Cold (S$2.30) Macau Milk Tea. For set meals, add 10c for a hot drink and 60c for cold

Our milk tea was alright but they tasted really Singaporean, like teh at Kopitiam, lacking the Macanese feel.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Macau Curry Fish Balls (S$4.90)

The fish balls were chewy and bouncy, very unlike the curry fish balls I had in Hong Kong which was a little tougher. I very much prefer this version because I like fish balls to be light and tender. And don’t be fooled by the piece of chilli in the bowl. The fish balls (and curry gravy) don’t taste spicy at all, trust me! 🙂

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Macau Chicken Wings (S$5.90 for 6pcs)

The same number of chicken wings is given for a la carte so I wouldn’t recommend ordering this individually because it’s more worthwhile getting it as a set with a main dish.

I haven’t been to Macau so I can’t compare this with the original. But judging from the hype around the outlets in Macau, I’m very sure the food tastes a lot nicer there 🙂

And that’s all for Tai Lei Loi Kei! Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more food updates!
