Lady M Confections @ Marina Square

Hey guys!

I wanted to blog about a confectionery that my boyfriend had recommended to me and yup, it’s called Lady M. Apparently it’s a confectionery originated from New York City and I believe the Singapore stores are its only overseas outlets.

Shop interior. There is a takeaway booth at the back and you don’t have to queue for that!

We went to the Marina Square branch (the other is at One Fullerton) yesterday after attending my niece’s baby shower and we spotted a long queue at the entrance when we were there! It must be really good, I thought. We waited for about 20 minutes before we finally got a table. With a budget of $30 (which I subsequently increased to $40 lol), we ordered two of their signature cakes and a pot of Earl Grey Tea.

ladym1

I thought it’s quite important to mention that Lady M serves free iced water! And it comes in this bigger-than-usual good quality plastic cup. To me, offering free iced water is the first step to breeding goodwill among customers but restaurants here rarely do it nowadays.

ladym2

Our pot of Earl Grey Tea (S$5 without taxes) was enough to serve 2. It was very fragrant, rich and made of very high quality tea leaves. Highly recommended!

Their cakes are layered with “no less than twenty paper-thin handmade crêpes…with ethereal light pastry cream”. In other words, they are America’s kueh lapis 😛

ladym6

Boyfriend ordered their most popular crepe cake – Vanilla Mille Crepes (S$8/slice without taxes). I tried it and it’s really not bad. The vanilla frosting isn’t too strong and you’d crave for more with every bite.

ladym7

Side view. Look at how creamy it is!

ladym11

As a green tea lover, I went with Green Tea Mille Crepes (S$8.50/slice without taxes) which is 70% covered with green tea powder – on top and infused into every layer.

ladym10

Side view – Made of very layers of thin, soft, green tea powdered crepe. For hardcore green tea fans only.

ladym8

The crepes fall out very easily when sliced, making my plate very messy 😦

I’m not a huge cake fan to begin with, so going to a confectionery didn’t really excite me. But their mille crepes were a refreshing change from the usual layer cakes. I didn’t enjoy the Green Tea Mille Crepes as much as the Vanilla one though because I felt that the former is a little too green tea overdose? It’s not bad at the first bite but you’d get sick of it gradually. However you may love it if you’re a big green tea lover.

We still had some time to burn after having our cakes so we went through their soup menu. Both my boyfriend and I love mushroom soup so we got ourselves a bowl of Vanilla Mushrooms to share. Vanilla?? Interesting. But I’m afraid nothing in there is vanilla at all.

ladym12

If you’re not in the mood for cakes, they have other food alternative as well! (I actually misread “Fig Tart” as “Big Fart” the very first time I looked at this menu lol)

ladym5

A bowl of Vanilla Mushroom (S$10 without taxes) is enough for 2 people if you’re not very hungry. But it’s really nice so I regret sharing it with boyfriend.

ladym4

Soup made of Shimeiji mushrooms, white truffle essence and cheesy croutons. It’s totally meat-free thus it’s also a vegetarian-friendly appetiser. What stood out on my taste bud about this soup is the white truffle essence. It really enhanced the taste of the soup!

ladym3

The egg york caught us by surprise! We didn’t know there was egg in it since this isn’t mentioned on the menu. Broke the poached egg and mixed it with the soup! It was a brilliant combination!

ladym13

Happy boy finally satisfied his craving.

Perhaps I’m really not a fan of pastries but I personally feel that their crepe cakes are overrated. I may be wrong since boyfriend loved it so much. Thus I would come back again but obviously not for the cakes. I would for the mushroom soup! It’s honestly one of the best I’ve had and I will definitely not share it with anyone LOL. I would love to try their starters as well probably when I’m ready to splurge again coz they are pretty pricey.

My total damage was S$37.10 including 10% government tax and 7% service charge. Service was satisfactory as the staff were very friendly and welcoming.

I went back again on 18 June as part of a plan for my boyfriend’s birthday celebration and had Red Velvet cake. They seemed to have added new items on their menu coz I didn’t see Red Velvet on my first visit.

May is the Month of Weddings!

Hello everyone! School is officially out for me so I would be updating this space more regularly until the new school term starts in August! (Yup, a 3-month break for me)

I haven’t been writing about my life so here’s one about some happy events I had been to this month although May hasn’t ended yet.

Last month, I received a surprise Facebook invitation from a secondary school classmate whom I had not spoken to for a long time (if you don’t include birthday wishes on her wall). Syamilah and I were in the same class for the last 3 years in Hillgrove before we graduated. The last time I saw her face-to-face was on the day we received our ‘O’ level results in 2008 when we were only 18. Blessed with good looks and pretty deep dimples on both cheeks, I remember her as a very prim and proper, prudent, refined and faithful Muslim girl who hasn’t changed a bit (in terms of character) through the years. Now 24, my dear “Mylah”, as I affectionately call her, has found her lifelong partner and was ready to transition into her next phase of life :’)

The wedding reception was held at the block beside Teck Whye LRT on 4 May and only a handful were invited from my cohort. It was a wedding celebration not just for one couple, but three (the other two were Syamilah’s brothers’)! Apparently it’s normal to have more than one couple in the same Malay wedding reception but held at different time slots – how cool! But I almost went for the wrong session if not for my mom’s reminder haha. All of us arrived about 10 minutes late but we were in time to catch the kompang performance which we would always hear from a distance away and never had the chance to watch it (unless you’re some thick-skinned aunties like those we encountered at the wedding, “crashed” the wedding, see-see-look-look for a long time and walked away -_- Pretty sure they ate some food at the buffet too).

Arrive in time to catch the Malay kompang performance, an important part of a traditional Malay wedding.

Oh, did I also mention that it was the first Malay wedding I had attended? I had no idea what to wear, how much to give and what to expect at the wedding thus I did my homework prior to the wedding and found this really useful site! Click here to read if you’re going to attend your first Malay wedding as well 🙂

Even though the minimum sum to give as stated on the site is $10, I gave more than that because being Chinese Singaporean has taught me to be less buay pai seh (shameless) and more generous. Also, contrary to Amy Cheong’s belief, it is equally pricey to have wedding at the void deck with each typically costing about $10,000? Because most of the money goes to the decorations. Oh gosh! Want to have simple wedding also cannot. So yeah, giving $10 is being really cheapskate.

Also, unlike Chinese weddings, the money (in small paper envelopes) should only be given before you leave or after you are done eating! I totally forgot about it and gave it to the hosts (bride’s parents) when we arrived. This eat-first-pay-later tradition gives me the impression that Malay weddings are not out to make profits, though it may not be the case.

I also spent like an hour in front of my closet deciding on what to wear to the wedding. Bearing in mind that it was a traditional Malay wedding where you’d expect other Malay guests to be in their baju kurungs, you definitely can’t go in provocative outfits because it’s just showing disrespect to the hosts. Well, not saying that I have many revealing clothes… The most revealing one I have just bares 1/4 of my back ^___^ And I haven’t worn it out yet cos I’m rather conservative myself -_- I picked the most cheerful and conservative dress which wouldn’t make me sweat buckets in this extremely hot weather – a Lilypirates number purchased 2 years back! Never got the chance to wear it cos it’s too flare for my liking (tends to make me look fatter than I already am) but I couldn’t bear to sell it cos the colours are so pretty!

Anyway, hungry me devoured the buffet lunch before I realised I hadn’t taken a picture of it, so no pictures of the food I’M SORRY!!! Haha but it was great with the right amount of spiciness! Malay cuisine has always been one of my favourites! If I were in a canteen with only a Malay and a Chinese stall, I’d definitely go for the former! Drinks however were a little diluted with too much artificial flavourings though but that’s not a huge problem for me.

Stayed for about 45 minutes and left before the next session began! 🙂

Congratulations Mr and Mrs Rusydi!

Congratulations once again, Mr and Mrs Rusydi!

On 10 May, which was yesterday, I attended my cousin’s wedding lunch and dinner reception at Chijmes and Hilton Hotel respectively. Jiamin 姐姐 was the bride and is also one of my closest maternal cousins who tried to coach me in badminton and Math when I was 12. Despite my constant failure in both, she had never once lost her patience and temper at me 😀 I doubt she remembers any of this now since it happened a really long time ago but yup, it’s still etched in my mind! She has an older sister who got hitched 3 years ago on the special date 11 November 2011 and I got to be one of her bridesmaids. Didn’t blog about that as I wasn’t that active on the blogosphere then (i.e. lazy), oops!

Back to her wedding at Chijmes, the wedding procession was held at the multi-purpose hall which was really breathtaking! The arched ceiling and stained glass window fit into my description of my ideal church wedding. After that, we had our lunch at the French restaurant beside it. It was a French buffet and boy, all the dishes were really good! Boyfriend kept going back for the dessert – not sure what it’s called but it’s like a small cup of mango pudding – while I really loved the lemon butter cod fish. Enjoyed the couscous as well!

Boyfriend was having a massive cough so I told him to put on a face mask. Imagine the solemnizer asking if anyone on the ground disapproves of the marriage and then he coughs. That's be super awkward.

Returned home after lunch to get changed into my evening outfit (lol I know). I picked a Love Bonito dress which I bought in January during my short stint in the company supposedly for Chinese New Year. But knowing that many girls would be wearing it since it was such a popular piece, I abandoned the idea. I bought the petite version because I like my dresses to be above-knee length but it turned out a little too short for my height HAHA. I had to remind myself not to bend forward as doing so would expose my butt huggers (even though I was wearing safety shorts… you know guys’ imagination can be really wild sometimes).

It was my second time at Hilton Hotel, which I remember for its super creamy and thick American Cheesecake. I felt that the banquet was not too bad, but not phenomenal at the same time. The dish that I enjoyed the most was the starters because the chicken in beancurd roll was really good! Actually I kinda love anything that is wrapped with beancurd roll.

My apologies that most of the pictures are of the food I ate and not of the newly-weds, because I couldn’t get a good angle from where I was seated 😦

There was also a photobooth (is it a trend nowadays at wedding receptions? Hehe) near the entrance of the ballroom. I wanted to take pictures there but there was a long queue 😦

The banquet ended near midnight with Or Nee (yam paste) as the final food item. It was the bridegroom’s favourite dessert which is coincidentally mine as well! In the hot dessert category at least… Ice Kacang is still the best. 😀

Warm Yam Puree & Ginko Nuts with Pumpkin in Coconut Jus

Warm Yam Puree & Ginko Nuts with Pumpkin in Coconut Jus. I actually loved it despite people saying that it wasn’t sweet enough. I think it’s very sweet leh!? And excuse me, I have a sweet tooth too! If only it didn’t come with so much ginko nuts!

And that’s about it! Now that most of my same-generation and older cousins are married, I am starting to feel the heat from relatives. I feel that marriage is a private affair and should not be anyone else’s business so I really hope and appreciate that people would stop asking me the question and pressurizing me into ending my bachelorette life!

“WHEN IS YOUR TURN??”

HOW ABOUT NO, NEVER HAPPENING??

Kidding. Later boyfriend scold me.

Yaki Yaki Bo

Hey everyone! I’m back with another food post because I’ve been eating out very often so that pretty much sums up my boring life.

(Just kidding, beauty posts coming up real soon!)

Yesterday, boyfriend and I decided to eat at Yaki Yaki Bo because he had completed his rewards card which entitled him to many free food. Damn aunty right I know.. We wanted to save the redemption for a rainy day but damn, good deals always come with an expiry date and it was going to expire at the end of this month! FASTER CLAIM THEM BEFORE WE FORGET!! We unintentionally forwent too many free meals in the past because we were too busy to redeem them.

Since we were at Serangoon, we went to their Nex outlet. Most of the reward points were collected at their Jurong Point branch because we usually had our lunch there after school.

For completing the rewards card, we were given the following:

Yaki Mentai Potato

Yaki Mentai Potato

Bacon, bacon everywhere.

Bacon, bacon everywhere. The Mentai paste was really good and flavourful and it went really well with the bacon!! It’s like a more glamourised version of mayonnaise…… Hah ok probably not the best description but you get what I mean right!?! IT’S JUST DAMN NICE LA PERIOD.

6-piece Teppan Gyoza

Gyoza fillings. Boyfriend and I shared a bowl of rice coz there were too many dishes with potato.

Pumpkin and Sweet Potato

Pumpkin and Sweet Potato

I frowned upon this on the menu ‘coz it definitely didn’t look appetizing at all. Since this was free I thought it wouldn’t taste nice but BOY I WAS WRONG. I loved it so much! The gravy was absolutely delicious and addictive! Pumpkin was softer and chewier than the sweet potato.

Teppan Chicken Set

Teppan Chicken Set (with a separate bowl of Japanese rice)

Close up of the chicken

Boyfriend and I ate the chicken without the skin because we’re so health-conscious like that. Chicken was alright, not very fantastic but honestly still pretty decent for a set meal. Haha (and don’t ask me why there’s a piece of corn kernel coz I also only noticed it now O_O)

Beansprout that came with the Teppan Chicken Set

I confess.. I’m not a veg lover and I dislike bean sprouts because I think they taste horrible. BUT THIS CHANGED MY PERCEPTION. I don’t know what magic the chef did but this was the best bean sprouts I had. It was one of those dishes that smelt like its taste.

Yes, 4 free dishes in total. To prove that we were not all cheapskate and only there to dine for free, we ordered one extra meat dish because we are extremely carnivorous.

Rib eye beef

Rib eye beef

Rib eye beef

Our rewards card completion is mostly attributed to this ‘coz we’d order this on every visit (plus it’s not very cheap). You can choose how you want the rib eye beef to be done and we always opt for medium rare. Depending on the mood of the server, this may come with a special dip which enhances the overall taste (it’s already nice on its own but I like it to be a little more salty) so if yours forgets, do request for one!

Cabbage that came with the rib eye beef

Cabbage that came with the rib eye beef. It was originally bean sprout but since we already had that, we requested for a change to cabbage at no extra charge.

Preparation style is akin to that of the bean sprout

Preparation style is akin to that of the bean sprouts so it’s equally delish!

For desserts, we ordered Teppan Banana. It’s basically banana split but the banana is cooked with metal griddle to give that crunchiness. YUMS! Ice cream is topped with some semi-bitter powder which tasted like.. cocoa? Before I could really taste it it had already dissolved into the ice cream so yeah -_-

Teppan banana

Inside the banana.. is its flesh. #captainobvious

My bill totalled up to $34.84 inclusive of GST and service charge omg. My cheapest restaurant meal ever. In addition, we got to spin their wheel of fortune to win vouchers worth up to $80. GUESS WHAT WE WON?

$30. Not too bad right!! We expected to win nothing since our luck isn’t that great. Hehehe so technically the meal was only $4.84 whoop whoop.

We got another blank rewards card but the management probably realised that previous validity period of 1 year was a tad too long (that allowed more time for cheapskates thrifty people like us to complete it) so they reduced it to 3 months. Such ngiao-ness (stinginess) lor, pfft. However the good news is that the card can still be used at other affiliated restaurants like Ichiban Boshi and Kuishin Bo. Find more outlets here.

That’s all from me! You can wipe that drool off your face now.
