REVIEW: MAC x Dita Von Teese Lipstick in Von Teese

Hello everyone!

When it comes to red lipsticks, no one wears in better than Dita Von Teese. Sporting a Marilyn Monroe-esque vintage makeup all the time, the renowned burlesque dancer completes her look with a striking red lip colour which stands out from her porcelain white skin and silky black updo. With red lips already ingrained into her image, it wasn’t hard to guess the shade of her lipstick with MAC even before it was announced.

Having worked with MAC on their Viva Glam campaign almost a decade ago (alongside many other celebrities), Dita Von Teese is certainly no stranger to the brand. But unlike the first partnership in which Dita Von Teese probably had little to no involvement in the decision of the lipstick shade, this latest collaboration sees a distinctive style of the said artiste – her trademark red lipstick, inspired by the launch of her new book, Your Beauty Mark.

The packaging was clearly designed to grab attention. With Dita Von Teese’s seductive eyes staring back at you from the box, there is no way you would miss it amongst the black boxes for MAC’s regular lipsticks. Encasing the lipstick is a typical shiny black plastic casing commonly used for limited edition lipsticks, but with the words “Dita Von Teese” printed on it in red.

Pardon my messy hairdo.. I was trying to channel my inner Dita Von Teese by attempting at big luscious curls. Obviously that didn’t work out because I was having a bad hair day and furthermore, I don’t have that much hair to achieve the plumped-up effect to begin with 😦 My red lips are probably the closest I’ll ever come to being like the burlesque queen.

The lipstick, although Matte, has a glossy texture and glides on smoothly that imparts a pleasant, moisturising feel with its creamy consistency. It has a pigment so bold that it managed to conceal my lip lines with only a single swipe, thereby instantly giving them an impeccable pout. There’s virtually nothing to rant about this lipstick.

I chanced upon a lot of comments about Von Teese being potentially similar to Ruby Woo, which is one of the burlesque star’s all-time favourite reds. Based on the swatches above, not only is Von Teese more opaque and hydrating (the Ruby Woo seen here contains the old Matte formula which tends to tug at the lips), it also appears to have bluer undertones as compared to Ruby Woo. So if you’re still contemplating on getting Von Teese because of scepticism that it might be an exact dupe for Ruby Woo, well, I hope this clears your doubt!

Nevertheless, I wish MAC had done something differently with Dita Von Teese, like a fuller collection with more variety of products such as brow pencils, falsies and whatnots.

Thanks for reading! You have been really awesome 🙂

REVIEW: MAC Magic of the Night Lipstick in Evening Rendezvous

Hello everyone!

How has your wallet held up to the festive season? Despite not feeling the Christmas spirit, the last holiday had almost depleted my bank account! I blame it on MAC and its colossal of a holiday collection. Alongside the Magic of the Night collection launched about three months ago (or last year, if I were to exaggerate) were oodles of holiday gift sets in three categories namely Irresistibly Charming, Enchanted Eve and Viva Glamorous which of course, were beyond my budget. As if these were not enough to bankrupt beauty addicts like myself (and I still had to fund my trip to Japan 😥 ), there were celebrity collaborations including Mariah Carey, Dita Von Teese and Ellie Goulding – all released in the month of December!

HELP! I CAN’T KEEP UP!

I have a pile of lipsticks in my room waiting to be reviewed but first, let’s talk about the Magic of the Night collection – a moderately big one with 4 lipsticks (in Please Me, All Fired Up, Evening Rendezvous & Dark Side), 2 lip pencils (in Redd & Nightmoth), 5 Colourdrenched Pigments (in Ascent of Glamour, Moon is Blue, Tonight’s the Night!, No Taboos & Night Thrill), 2 Pearlglide Intense Eye Liners (in Petrol Blue & Black Swan) and 1 In Extra Dimension Skinfinish in Shaft of Gold.  Fortunately, the lipsticks were mostly repeats of shades that were already permanent. so I didn’t have to dig deep into my pocket this time around. Furthermore, with just a single new shade in this collection, it didn’t take me long to decide what to get.

Festive colours were aptly chosen for this theme as the lip products were all decked out fully in luxurious purple reflective casing, thereby shying away from the standard sombre black packaging. The eye and face products, on the other hand, were adorned in a darker shade of aquatic blue. In view of the efforts made to pimp up the packaging, naturally the products would cost a little more. But thankfully, they were still on the affordable side.

After a series of disappointing  and subpar lipsticks (especially those annoying lustres) released throughout the year, there’s finally one I can rave about. Evening Rendezvous boasts intense colour payoff in just one swipe and flaunts an emollient and slightly lustrous texture even though it is technically a matte. It is neither drying nor overtly balmy, which I felt was the perfect finish. On top of that, it has mostly opaque coverage with a great lasting effect because it only started wearing off after 4 hours. This is a gorgeous universal shade of purple which complements all skin tones. I have seen similar colours on dark skin tones (on Indians, to be precise) and thought that they pulled it off really well!

Strangely, being the only new lipstick shade in this lineup, it would have been expected to be among the first to sell out but instead, it was Dark Side that got greyed out on the website. There must be some kind of magic in this limited edition packaging because people actually didn’t mind paying more for a permanent shade! Unbelievable. Based on the reviews I’ve read so far, the general consensus I got was that it’s a high-performing lipstick, so I don’t understand how it’s not snapped up yet.

Pure Heroine is pretty close, so if you’ve missed out on the Lorde collection about 2 years ago, you should consider getting Evening Rendezvous!

And that’s about it! Do stay tuned for more beauty updates coming your way! 🙂

Also, my sincere apologies if you have been waiting for my lipstick reviews (the last time I did one was more than a month ago, shame on me!). Final year project has been a total bitch lately although it is technically the school holidays but I will still try to find time to bring you the latest beauty reviews even if it means having to sacrifice a few hours of my sleep time!

Thanks for reading and have a blessed week ahead! 🙂

MAC Magic of the Night collection is now available on MACCosmetics.com as well as in stores (may be pulled off the shelves by now, so please call to check before heading down).

REVIEW: MAC MACnificent Me Lipsticks – Self Aware, Deep Love, Diva Antics & My Inner Femme

Hello everyone!

In this subsequent installment of the MACnificent Me collection, MAC continues to allure with four new and a highly anticipated repromote lipstick (in Fashion Revival, which I already own) shades alongside 4 Eye Shadows (in Cheer Me On, Well Behaved, Everyone’s Darling & Cork), Opulash Optimum Black Mascara, Penultimate Eye Liner, 2 Lip Pencils (in Cherry & Currant) and 3 Powder Blush (in Devil, Burnt Pepper & A Little Lusty).

But as mentioned previously, I was only keen on getting the lipsticks and so far my experience with my purchase has been largely upsetting. Would the lipsticks be able to make up for the unsatisfactory standards of the Mattenes? Let’s find out!

For the first time in what seems to be forever (*cues Frozen song*), we finally have a MAC line without a single Lustre packed with solid colours. However, when I first saw the swatches on my hand, a sense of familiarity struck me because the colours looked like what I already have in my stash! But then again, this always happens whenever I test out new shades because of my massive collection of lipsticks so I wouldn’t know if it’s really the case until I compare them with other similar shades 😆

The English idiom “don’t judge a book by its cover” fits aptly with my critique of this lipstick. Self Aware has such enticing and irresistible food-esque description and a lovely colour on the bullet along with a promising finish but the moment it was applied on the lips, all my idealistic impression of it fell apart instantly. The swatch looked really gorgeous so I really didn’t expect it to pale my lips and wash me out. Nevertheless, it does blend well with my natural lip colour and provide a mostly opaque coverage in a single swipe. I certainly would love to see this shade in a darker hue. This one is probably more suited (prominent) for very fair skin tone.

There’s no denying that Self Aware has a rather unique shade because no other MAC lipsticks I own come that close 🙂

New matte lipstick shades are such a rare sight on MAC website these days that I totally combusted with joy when I saw the list of products for this collection! Deep Love is highly pigmented with full coverage that does not settle into the fine line and cracks of the lips nor bleed out. The subtle sheen provides a flattering glow to the lips to make it look fuller and hydrated. However, it tugs a bit on the lips and may feel slightly drying over time.

Deep Love looks like a typical dark maroon until you compare it against other shades. It is actually more like rust brown! Doesn’t look like it on the lips, does it?

No thanks to the misleading product shot of this lipstick on MAC website, I bought this with the impression that it was going to be a deep plum-purple shade. Obviously, it didn’t turn out to be the case. Nevertheless it is still a pretty red lipstick with some pink undertones. Putting the colour aside, it has a lovely creamy and somewhat glossy finish that glides smoothly on the lips like butter even though it has a tendency to bleed. It delivers a comfortably opaque coverage with a hint of shine for the holidays, making it the perfect lipstick for your upcoming Christmas or New Year’s party. I highly recommend this shade for Asian skin tones! 🙂

Having said that, you don’t need this lipstick if you already have D For Danger (from The Matte Lip 2015 collection) because not only is it similar to Diva Antics in terms of the colour, they have very comparable texture too!

Like Diva Antics, My Inner Femme promises a medium to full coverage that magically catches light to create a gorgeous illusion of fuller and smoochable lips. Every application coats the lips with a luminous layer of moisturizing and rich orange-red shade that sets you apart from your peers who dare not venture out of their comfort zone with unconventional lip colours. Wear this shade to complete your glamourous fall look or to match the auspicious colours of Chinese New Year although it’s a tad too early for that. Still, it’s always good to plan ahead, right? 😉

Dramatical is a sheerer while Lady Danger is brighter, warmer and more pigmented. I don’t think there’s a close MAC dupe for My Inner Femme so this scores bonus points for being one-of-a-kind.

Finally, to sum things up, high price does not necessarily reflect the quality as you can tell from this whole MACnificent Me collection. Despite the lower selling price, this range of lipsticks surpassed expectations with their excellent colour payoff and luxurious finish so I was surprised to see that none of them is sold out yet. In fact, I would rather pay the US$20 – the price of each Mattene – for any one lipstick here instead. I mean, just sayin’. I am certainly not giving MAC the green light to jack up their prices further. At least not for the next 1 year or so. I’m broke as hell lol.

What about you? Let me know your thoughts about this collection in the comments below!
