Mom’s Birthday @ Crab Party

Hey everyone! Hope your week has been great so far 😉

My Mom celebrated her birthday last week and being the eldest child, I had the responsibility of deciding where to take her on her special day. With so many restaurants to choose from, deciding where to eat can be a real headache. After narrowing down my choices, I finally decided on Crab Party which has been my go-to restaurant to satisfy my crab craving (mega love the Butter Cream Crab there!) ever since I was introduced to it six years ago.

It wasn’t my Mom’s first time at Crab Party, having brought my parents to dine there once in 2012 on Father’s Day. They too loved the food and were full of praise for the crab dishes. But prices are pretty steep and the place can be quite inconvenient if you don’t drive.

It is also noteworthy that the crabs sell out very quickly so it’s important that you ask to reserve your preferred number and size of the crab when you call to book a table.

The following is what we ordered!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Salted Egg Chicken (S$12+)

We were tossing up between ordering Butter Cream Crab and Salted Egg Crab but I was dying to have the taste of the butter cream I missed to much linger on my tongue once again. So we got the best of both worlds! The chicken came in bite-size pieces (like KFC’s Popcorn Chicken) coated with savoury salted egg seasoning. Every bite was sensational!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Kailan with Beef (S$15+)

We had some greens to balance out the guilt! The beef was glistening in the restaurant ceiling light, making the entire dish look so appetising and enticing. The beef was great and had a consistent chewy texture. But I enjoyed the greens more because they were really fresh and crunchy!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Black Sauce Big Prawn (S$25+)

This was ordered by my Mom who is a huge prawn lover. I wasn’t particularly pleased with the size of the prawns because they were nowhere near “big”. Worst of all, the flesh was rather mushy – a sign that the prawns were not fresh. Overall, this dish was a disappointment.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Mantou (S$1+ each)

Boyfriend and I went sans rice that day to allow more stomach space for the hot and crispy Mantou (steamed buns) which we would dip into the chilli gravy and butter cream sauce below.

Crabs were chargeable at S$65/kg which is pretty much on the high side. To have a peace of mind, we usually ask for our crabs to be weighed before we place our orders. We certainly don’t wish to get a rude shock when we receive our bill at end of the meal.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Favourite Chilli Crab (medium, 1.6kg, S$104+)

Chilli Crab is the restaurant’s signature dish and of course, my folks’ favourite style of cooking crabs. The gravy was sweet and spicy enough for me but definitely not for my parents whose tolerance for spicy food is sky-high.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Butter Cream Crab (medium, 1.6kg, S$104+)

We ordered another crab because boyfriend and I aren’t really into chilli. And most importantly, we didn’t want to compete with our elders for the crab pincers *chuckles* Our pincers were all very meaty because both crab were medium-sized, which made our meal even more gratifying.

The Butter Cream gravy was divine as usual. Sweet, thick and smooth, the gravy propels you to heaven with a single taste. It’s one of the best Butter Cream Crab I’ve had and I’m so glad standards remain unchanged throughout the years. I feel that it tastes even better with Mantou 🙂

Okay hope you guys like this short update! I have more posts coming up so please bear with me 😉

REVIEW: MAC is Beauty Lipsticks – Highlights, Call the Hairdresser!, Real Redhead, Make Me Gorgeous, Diva-ish & Reel Sexy

Whoop, what a title ^^’

Hey everyone! As promised across all my social media platforms, I’ll be reviewing six of the 12 MAC lipsticks that are slated to be released in Singapore this coming Friday. It took me a while to prep this post because of the colossal amount of new shades this time, although I only bought half the number. But trust me, I would have gotten every single one if my funds allowed it because I’m always very hyped up at the thought of owning new lipstick shades 😀

mac-is-beauty-6

This mega collection includes 12 lipsticks, 16 Pro Longwear Fluidline (all Permanent), 4 Eye Shadows (in Yogurt, Preening, Wow Factor & Bouffant), 1 Eye Kohl in I Get No Kick, 4 Cremesheen Glass (in On the Scene, Fashion Scoop, Star Quality & Japanese Spring), 2 Beauty Powder (in Alpha Girl & Pearl Blossom), 3 Studio Nail Lacquer (in French Tipped, To Dye For & Doll Me Up) and 3 LE brushes ( 137 Long Blending, 221 Mini Tapered Blending & 267 Curved Angle)

Unlike the past few launches, MAC is Beauty is truly a Spring-themed collection centering around bright pastel colours which can be a bit of a hit-and-miss for me. On top of that, majority of the lipsticks (8) would be in Lustre finish which I believe isn’t the most popular finish in the MAC community, let alone mine. Thus, I wasn’t very thrilled about the launch when I first saw the product shots although the colours are supposed to be vibrant and fun like springtime. The shades were all too light and bright for my skin tone (sucks to be on the tanner side) and most of them would probably vanish on my lips like my other Lustre lipsticks anyway.

But I’m all about giving second (or third.. kinda lost count) chances. Well, actually… I just had the urge to splurge knowing that there wouldn’t be another new lipstick launch after this for the next month. So yes, gonna let loose a bit and make a bigger haul this time teehee.

Avoiding the lighter pinks and peaches, I picked the ones I felt would have stronger colour payoff – except for Highlights. I got that because I was intrigued by the uniqueness of the colour.

My swatch 🙂 Yay or nay?

My first impression about the chosen six was somewhat positive because the colours didn’t immediately remind me of what I already have. That’s a great start! I have 3 Amplifieds and 3 Lustres here. Can you guess which are the Lustres without me telling you? Duh, of course you can.

Reel Sexy

SAMSUNG CSC

Reel Sexy is a bright coral with Amplified finish. (US$16 / S$30)

Three lipstick shades from this collection are repromotes and Reel Sexy is one of them, having previously released back in Spring 2012. It’s a bright peachy-coral that’s mostly opaque and surprisingly doesn’t wash me out. It tends to be a little clumpy and it’s quite obvious where it does since it’s light so do remember to exfoliate your lips before application. Other than that, it’s a lovely colour 🙂 The closest shade to this I could find in my stash is Ravishing.

SAMSUNG CSC

Ravishing, one of my go-to nude shades, is a little lighter whereas Kinda Sexy is darker and more matte.

Call the Hairdresser!

SAMSUNG CSC

Call the Hairdresser! is a rosey mauve with Lustre finish (US$16 / S$30)

I don’t expect to see any remarkable difference for Lustre shades in my before and after pictures because they have been a letdown in terms of consistency and pigmentation so far. But Call the Hairdresser! seems to prove otherwise. It’s such a pretty shade of pink with a subtle sheen that complements my skin tone perfectly. Finally something praise-worthy from the Lustre range. Pity this finish typically doesn’t last long. This definitely deserves a better finish like Satin or Retro Matte.

Real Redhead

SAMSUNG CSC

Real Redhead is a mauve nude with Lustre finish. (US$16 / S$30)

I expected it to be somewhat identical to Call the Hairdresser! since they look really similar on the official swatch but they turn out to be worlds apart in reality. Real Redhead is waaaaay lighter but still visible on the lips. Nevertheless, I kinda like how the lustre is spread evenly across my lips and doesn’t really settle into my fine lip lines. This makes a great MLBB shade if you ask me 🙂

Check out how Call the Hairdresser!, Real Redhead and Reel Sexy compare with other similar shades:

Highlights

Highlights is a very pale creamy peach with Lustre finish. (US$16 / S$30)

This has got to be my least favourite purchase and also the most underperforming one to date. It was one of the first items I added to my cart because the gorgeous peachy-gold swatch on the website instantly caught my attention (it was even sold out at one point). Furthermore, I also had the impression that it was going to be like the orangey-yellow lipstick worn by the model on the foreground of the promo picture above. But it swatched out to be a completely different colour from the bullet itself and everything else I had thought out to be.

It’s basically a complete mess with the shimmers settling straight into all my lip lines and accentuating every unsightly detail of my lips. The more I attempted to even them out, the more they combined to form clusters of chunky sparkle which in my opinion reminded me of biscuit crumbs around my lips like I had forgotten to wipe my mouth after tea break. Extremely awful and not to mention an utter disappointment for something I was looking forward so much to 😦

Adding to my woes, the bullet – which already felt slightly melted when I applied it on my lips – broke when I was swatching it on my hand. *sigh* I would gladly trade this for Silly which I didn’t realise was Matte until recently.

SAMSUNG CSC

Bottom line: poor pigmentation, no lasting power, messy and terrible quality

Make Me Gorgeous

SAMSUNG CSC

Make Me Gorgeous is an intense coral pink with Amplified finish. (US$16 / S$30)

Love the colour and how it makes me look unusually *innocent* haha

This lipstick is perfect with excellent pigmentation and coverage. It’s also creamy and it glides over the contours of my lips evenly, concealing all the lines and delivering a lasting vibrant colour with a subtle sheen.

Diva-ish

SAMSUNG CSC

Diva-ish is an intense fuchsia with Amplified finish. (US$16 / S$30)

SAMSUNG CSC

My favourite purchase from this haul because I’m so in love with this shade of fuchsia. It doesn’t scream for attention like how most bright fuchsias do and most importantly, I actually think I look good in it *chuckles* It is mostly opaque and has great pigmentation and shine, coupled with a nice creamy texture like Make Me Gorgeous which doesn’t dry out my lips. It’s a pretty colour which I see myself wearing often to work! 🙂

SAMSUNG CSC

I guess its’s also a rather unique colour? I don’t really have a dupe for it 🙂

And that’s all from me! Doing a detailed review on 6 shades consecutively is no joke (on the lips as well) especially when you have no time like me to do it separately. I wonder how other beauty bloggers do it with all 12 :-S Really hats off to them hahaha.

Valentine’s Day Dinner @ Privé Grill

Hello everyone!

So much love was in the air last weekend because of Valentine’s Saturday. While every boyfriend scrambled to the florists and jewelry shops to get their girlfriends flowers and an expensive gift, I stressed to my boyfriend that I didn’t want anything. After all, I never liked flowers (partially because I’d feel utterly embarrassed to be holding a bouquet of flower everywhere I go) and jewelries (especially if it’s just diamonds. Useless stones. Yeah I said it) and I hated the idea of having to pay for ridiculously marked up restaurant food prices. Although I consider myself to be independent, I still feel the pinch for my boyfriend whenever he splurges on exorbitant stuff.

Simply put, I’ve never considered Valentine’s Day to be anything special. I can spend the entire 14th February idling on the bed. No problem.

But contrary to my character, my boyfriend is a hopeless romantic. He wouldn’t let the day go by without doing something. He knows I’m never into all this Valentine’s Day hype, but he also knows that I’d never say “no” to food. So he booked a table at Privé (pronounced as “pree-veh“) Grill for 13th February (because the actual day was full) as the restaurant was also having a Valentine’s Day promotion – a 6-course dinner set menu at S$118++ per pax (early bird price of S$108++ from 6-7pm). Ouch.

All ready for a tantalising 6-course dinner!

Valentine’s Day may be over, but my passion for food lives on. So here’s my review!

SAMSUNG CSC

Complimentary potato chips

We were served an unusual choice of starter – a small bucket of potato chips – that was nice and crisp at the beginning. But it quickly lost its crunchiness and became soggy when it cooled down, leaving nothing but a whole load of oil on the base of the bucket. The amount of oil used to fry these chips was terrifying. Still, I really enjoyed it while it was hot.

SAMSUNG CSC

Complimentary bread and a spoonful of.. diced tomato?

SAMSUNG CSC

Ciabatta. poolish and sourdough (yes we ate them all even though we’re still on a low-carb diet. We decided that Friday the 13th was another cheat day for us *grins*)

SAMSUNG CSC

Off to a healthy start (pun intended hehe)

Then came another complimentary starter with two components. I believe this was supposed to be Tomato Bruschetta where you’d have to eat both together (by spreading the diced tomato on top of the bread). But there was obviously too little tomato for that to be done so we just ate the bread and the tomato on its own. 😛

SAMSUNG CSC

Smoked Norwegian Salmon Belly

SAMSUNG CSC

Fried egg yolk

Our appetizer was a salmon dish with crispy seaweed crackers, fried egg yolk (quail egg, I guess), pickled cucumber and candied (sweet) ginger. The salmon was fresh and sliced to perfection. Thick and slimy, it was such a joy eating every piece. What intrigued me most was the egg because I didn’t expect it to be in this form. Loved how the runny yolk spurt slightly in my mouth 😀

SAMSUNG CSC

Oysters and Pearls

Served with poached oyster and avruga, this charred leek and potato soup was something new and unusual to my palate. It wasn’t the usual soup course with an explosion of flavours in the mouth, but it was pleasant, light and surprisingly delectable. The pearls (avruga) gave the oyster a smoked taste. Not bad!

SAMSUNG CSC

Roasted Quail

SAMSUNG CSC

Quail meat

Deboned to make the lives of poultry lovers easier, this dish was served with mushrooms, pomegranates, parmesan polenta, warm pistachio with Muscat dressing. The nicely-cooked quail was very meaty and saporous despite its size. The polenta was creamy (almost mistook it for cheese) while the pomegranates gave the dish a crunchy and sweet punch. All in all, this was a plate of flavours which worked.

Service started to slow at this point as more patrons started pouring in, angering a few existing diners who had waited for close to an hour for their food. Our main course was also delayed for more than 30 minutes and it was until we queried about it that they really started to expedite our orders.

SAMSUNG CSC

Josper-Grilled Brandt Filet Steak

We had a choice between the filet steak and Salt-Baked Atlantic Cod (with grilled Maine scallops, prawn ravioli, crisp squid tentacles, zucchini and saffron-cream sauce – just for the record) for the main course. As we had previously dined at Privé Grill twice before, we knew that the restaurant’s specialty is steak. Hence the filet steak for our mains.

Josper-Grilled Brandt Filet Steak came with gratinated lobster tail, cumin-carrot purée, asparagus, bone marrow and red wine sauce. Juicy, tender and in reasonable portion, the steak has never disappointed us so far. The lobster tail was succulent and firm and I felt that it was a bonus on the plate. Eating the bone marrow was another first for us at Privé Grill. Basically just soft fats, it’s actually quite delicious with the salt and pepper seasoning.

SAMSUNG CSC

Rose Panna Cotta

SAMSUNG CSC

Raspberry on lychee

For dessert, we had Rose Panna Cotta with raspberries, lychee, sheep’s milk skin and tonka bean ice cream. It was one of the best dishes of the night. The Panna Cotta was tangy and creamy, and its sweetness balanced out the sourness of the raspberries. It was a very hearty end to the meal 🙂

SAMSUNG CSC

What’s next?

The last item on the menu was either coffee or tea to cleanse our palates.

SAMSUNG CSC

We chose tea!

After settling our bill, I was given a bag that contained a slice of banana cake, courtesy of the restaurant. Yay, free food! It was probably given out to couples (more specifically, the ladies :D) who bought the Valentine’s Day dinner package. I shared the cake with Bf on the spot as I didn’t wanna bring it home.

SAMSUNG CSC

Complimentary treat at the end of the meal

SAMSUNG CSC

The fragrant banana cake was generously thick (although it’s free) and fluffy. Loved it. Thanks Privé!

SAMSUNG CSC

Thanks for the treat, dear!

SAMSUNG CSC

It’s time to go home! But first, let’s take a selfie

I guess $118++ for these scrumptious dishes was a worthwhile spend. They would probably cost more if ordered individually. But I really wouldn’t mind if the money was spent on something less extravagant. Oh well. ^^’

That’s all for this food post!

Oh, it’s the Lunar New Year already, so here’s wishing everyone a Happy Year of the Goat, 新年快乐 and 恭喜发财! ❤
