REVIEW: M·A·C Snow Ball – Face Bag (Extra Dimension Skinfinish in Whisper of Gilt), Lipsticks in Elle Belle & Holiday Crush

Hello everyone!

You know Christmas is just around the corner when mentions of M·A·C Holiday collection hit the internet. This year, our beloved beauty brand introduces Snow Ball – a massive collection wrapped entirely in gold snowflake-emblazoned packaging that would make you want to empty your bank account.

The Snow Ball Mini Lipstick Kit was an especially great bargain. If I hadn’t already owned 90% of the shades in there, I would have bought it in a heartbeat when it was pre-released to the M·A·C Obsessed members on the U.S. site.

Some other products from this collection not show above are the Face Powder (US$34 / S$46), Lash (US$17 / S$25) and Snowflake Adornment (US$16.50 / S$23). Unfortunately, the Prep + Prime Fix+ Kit (US$20) is not available in Singapore and you won’t be able to purchase it from the U.S. site too because of restrictions on shipping liquids. Ah, bummer! 😫

Apart from the to-die-for packaging, prices also seem to be a lot lower as compared to the previous years. Either M·A·C had decided to listen to the feedback of their customers or they had felt the pressure to keep their prices affordable from the growing competition in the market. Whatever it is, it is a win-win for both sides – customers wouldn’t feel much of a pinch shopping the collection and M·A·C gets to clear their stocks fast. And by fast, I mean wiping out almost everything in the collection within the first hour (both online and in Singapore stores)! 😲

Fortunately, I scored what I wanted on my list (many thanks to M·A·C Singapore 😘) and here’s my review:

The Snow Ball collection features two Face Bags in gold and peach with an US$85 value. Both bags, cheaply covered with scratchy sequins (gawd, I swear this is the laziest way to glitz up something) with a faux-fur pom pom hanging from the zipper, contain a different shade of snowflake-embossed Extra Dimension Skinfinish in rose gold packaging as well as an exclusive rose gold-handled 140 Synthetic Full Fan Brush worth US$42.

The peach version comes with Show Gold – which is already in the permanent line of Extra Dimension Skinfinish – while the shade in the gold one is limited edition so obviously, the demand was going to lean towards the latter. The brush, according to M·A·C, is “made from a blend of synthetic fibres in different diameter sizes to optimally pick up and apply powders”. The bristles are fluffy and smooth to the touch wonder but I why it is even included in the bag if it is more suited to applying loose powder which the highlighter isn’t?

One of the most anticipated products in this collection, the Whisper of Gilt was first released in 2012 as a limited edition Extra Dimension Skinfinish and subsequently repromoted last year as part of the Sweet Copper Face Compact for the Nutcracker Holiday collection. The current holiday edition of the bestselling highlighter has a net weight of 7.5 g (0.26 oz) as opposed to the 9 g (0.31 oz) when it was launched in its original packaging. Each full-size Extra Dimension Skinfinish is sold for US$34 / S$55.

Finished look

Finished look

Whisper of Gilt is described as a pale gold shimmer with very finely milled luminous particles to give a sparkling finish. It is a champagne-toned highlighter that is neither too white nor gold, making it absolutely flattering on light to medium skin tones. Smooth to the touch, it has a soft consistency which makes it possible to blend and diffuse on the skin easily while adding just the right amount of glow. However, it does emphasise the natural texture of my skin to some extent (as I didn’t realise I had a little pimple above my cheekbone until I layered it with this highlighter 😐).

When applied with the M·A·C powder brush provided in the Face Bag, the highlighter appeared hardly visible on my skin. But with my Sigma F41 Fan Brush, it rendered a sheer to semi-opaque coverage (depending on how heavy-handed I was) and a moderate glow with two to three coats. Having said that, it is certainly capable of building to greater opacity when applied with finger or a denser (damp) brush if a more blinding radiance is preferred.

If you had missed out on the opportunity to snag a Face Bag at your local M·A·C store, or cannot bear to part with your money on a redundant bag and brush, Champagne Pop and Bigger and Better (from ColourPop’s Gimme More! Palette) are some more affordable dupes that you may want to consider.

Encased in gold tubes with smooth, glossy frost effect on the outside and kept in see-through plastic boxes with gold geometric snowflake patterns, the lipsticks are packaged similarly to the highlighter to conjure up that Christmas vibe. They’re so pretty and shiny, you can literally use them as your Christmas tree ornaments 😍

Elle Belle is described as a deep red with a Amplified finish. This luscious cool-toned berry red goes on smoothly with no drag and gives an opaque colour payoff in just one swipe. It has a glossy sheen and buttery texture to it but those somehow translate to an oily consistency which causes the lipstick to budge very quickly. Although hydrating and relatively comfortable to wear, it settles into the lines and emphasises dry patches, resulting in blobs of uneven colour on the lips if not properly exfoliated prior to application. When this shade fades to a plum stain after a few hours of wear, vertical streaks of the lipstick can be clearly seen along the lines on the lower lip. Yikes! 😣

Holiday Crush is described as a muted pink with sparkle and a Frost finish. This cool-toned muted copper glides on smoothly without tug and lends an evenly-distributed metallic shine across the lips to give a reflective-foiled look. It is lightweight and lightly emollient but feels slightly tacky on the lips. This shade catches light beautifully at every angle and takes about two coats to be fully (or reasonably) opaque. However, the finish seems to intensify the appearance of the lip lines and can make me kinda self-conscious if worn out in public so I’ll probably use it as a lip topper instead. But I cannot lie. This shade is a stunner!

Despite the price drop, I’m so glad M·A·C did not compromise on the quality and actually rolled out products that the customers really want. It seems like M·A·C is finally back in the game!

REVIEW: ColourPop × My Little Pony – Pressed Powder Highlighter in Starflower & Trickles, Ultra Matte Lip in Lemon Drop & Pin Wheel

Hello everyone!

Continuing from where the previous ColourPop × My Little Pony collection review ended last week, here’s the second post where I will talk about some of the face and lip products from the same haul.

Let's begin with the highlighters!

Let’s begin with the highlighters!

Housed in a purple compact with an integrated mirror and a magnetic closure, the highlighters in the ColourPop × My Little Pony collection are about the size of an adult palm with a net weight of 6.5 g (0.23 oz) each. Made in the U.S. with stars embossed on the surface, the highlighters are available in two shades – Starflower and Trickles – and I’ve got them both here in this review.

Like the eye shadow palette, the motifs on the compact don’t quite appeal to me and I find the workmanship for this collection to be rather shoddy and lazy. In particular, Starflower arrived with slight dip in the bottom bit of the product as if it was not properly filled and pressed in the pan. Loose product was scattered all around the pan when I opened the case and it even dirtied the mirror. That said, I must consider myself lucky enough for not receiving a totally shattered ColourPop highlighter considering how fragile they are according to the reviews on their website!

The names of the highlighters are also printed in black on see-through stickers that are pasted on the most inconspicuous part of their respective boxes (not the compact). Hence, unless you manually write them on the compact, you’d need to keep referring back to the boxes for their names (and you cannot lose them).

Now, onto the critique of the products themselves.

Starflower is described as a peachy gold with a finish being more metallic than glittery. Finely milled, this highlight is mostly sheer with very limited buildability. Also, perhaps because it is rather similar to my natural skin colour, it isn’t very prominent on my skin. This would be ideal if you are going for a soft glow or prefer something that isn’t too blinding. But personally, I was a little underwhelmed by it 😫 The first swipe rendered little to no reflective quality and it appears a bit chunky on my cheekbones as it tends to emphasise the pores and texture of my skin. This probably will work better on darker skin tones.

#2 Pressed Powder Highlighter in Trickles

Trickles is described as a lavender with pink opal duochrome flip. This was added to my cart on a whim to meet the minimum threshold for free international shipping but I ended up enjoying it more than Starflower. Trickles has a soft and metallic finish and is fairly blendable on the skin. It does not share the same formula as the Super Shock Highlighter so expect neither a blinding glow nor an intense pigmentation from it. However, if you prefer a more subtle dewy look, this is the shade you should pick up.

Trickles appears more luminous than Starflower and adds a subtle bounce of light to the cheekbones. For me, I do not have to build up much to see the holographic shift (and besides, my room isn’t the most well-lit of places so to be able to even see colour payoff from any highlighter is already a massive plus). Without having to scrape the top layer, I just need to sweep the brush over my cheekbones twice for the highlighter to pop. I recommend this stunner over Starflower any day!

Apart from the additional whimsical detail on the tube (which I quite like), the packaging of the lip products in this collaboration did not deviate much from those in the permanent line. There are a total of six lip products in this My Little Pony collection with three being the Ultra Glossy Lips (Ponyland, Dream Castle & Flutter Valley) – which were a hard pass for me since I’m not a fan of glossy finish – and the rest Ultra Matte Lips (Lemon Drop, Pin Wheel & Moondancer). I have always been a strong advocate of dark lips but this time, I wanted something I don’t already have hundreds of dupes of in my stash 🤨

Lemon Drop is described as a bright cool-toned lavender. This shade darkens as it sets and eventually becomes less pastel and somewhat of a royal purple with a flat-matte and shine-free finish. Bold yet universally flattering (especially on darker skin tones), this shade has a creamy and thick consistency and is absolutely transfer-proof. Lemon Drop saturates the lips with uniform opaque colour that locks into place in just one swipe. It dries down almost instantly and does not settle into the creases of the lips. Although it can feel slightly drying, it doesn’t crack on the lips. However, it has the tendency to flake off after a few hours of wear. When removed, it leaves a pinkish tint on the lips which I honestly don’t mind at all 😆

Pin Wheel is described as a vibrant cool-toned fuchsia. It is an alluring cool-toned hot pink that is guaranteed to grab eyeballs and earn you compliments. Extremely pigmented, this shade provides an intense and opaque colour in one application. It has a more watery consistency than Lemon Drop so it takes a while to completely dry down. Velvety in texture, it is neither drying or hydrating and wears comfortably lightweight. It settles to a flat matte without constricting the lips and the colour remains true to what you see in the tube. On top of it being totally transfer-proof and long-lasting. it also does not emphasise lip wrinkles. Honestly, there is really nothing much to gripe about this lovely lipstick!

[POP-UP] MINIONS CAFE @ THE Guest cafe&diner Singapore

Bello everyone!

After two runs of the immensely popular Pokémon Café at EwF Bugis Junction in 2015 and 2016, PARCO (Singapore) returns with another pop-up café concept and this time, it revolves around the adorably small, yellow, cylindrical critters of the Despicable Me series – the Minions!

For a limited time, the first pop-up MINIONS CAFÉ outside Japan will operate from 23rd November 2017 to 31st January 2018 on the third floor of Orchard Central. Rebranded from “The Despicable Me 3 Cafe” in Japan at five THE GUEST cafe&diner outlets located in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo and Fukuoka during July and September this year, the Singapore edition brings in 14 original food and beverage items on the menu – all of which are specially conceptualised and developed by THE GUEST cafe&diner for the MINIONS CAFÉ.

Apart from that, exclusive MINIONS CAFE Original Goods – currently not available anywhere else in the world – can also be purchased alongside other official “Despicable Me 3” merchandise with either cash or NETS (we didn’t see the option to pay by credit card). Considering how well-received the Minions are, long queue is expected at the MINIONS CAFÉ so why not take this chance to browse the merchandise booth while waiting to be seated or served?

As with most themed pop-up cafés, do bear in mind that licensing fees (the killer) and importation charges among other overhead expenses are factored into the costs so the prices will unsurprisingly be on the high side. All prices stated are not inclusive of 10% service charge and prevailing government taxes. Payment, we believe, can be made with cash, NETS or credit card. We will update should there be any factual error.

In the latest Despicable Me film, Minions are caught and imprisoned! Oh no! This time, they are really in the cream stew!

Presentation-wise, the Minion’s Great Escape Cream Stew gets all the credit it deserves. The visual presentation of the displeased Minion is very well done to the point that it was a struggle deciding whether to keep the edible facial features of the Minion or to dissect and eat it. Of course, we went for the latter choice. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have known it was actually made of tasteless thin rice wafer instead of some cardboard material we initially suspected was solely for decorative purposes.

The saffron rice that forms the bulk of this dish is slightly buttery with a subtle sweetness. The cream base – which reminded me of cream of mushroom soup – was a little too cloying on its own for my liking but when paired with the rice, the fragrance from the carb complemented the sweetness of the sauce very well. That said, the amount of ingredients in this dish is too little. Visibly, the number of broccoli florets, carrot and potato chunks on the plate is minimal to say the least and there is far too little protein in the form of chicken meat for it to qualify as a main course. If not for the scanty portion of meat, we would have seriously thought this was a vegan dish. Nevertheless, the abundance of greens, coupled with the fact that this comes with a mini salad bowl, makes this an extremely healthy dish.

Gelato!

Gelato!

If you’ve been eating marshmallows straight from the bag, you’ve been doing it wrong. Or rather, you probably haven’t tried s’mores yet! This traditional nighttime campfire treat popular in the United States involves roasting marshmallows before placing them between two biscuits (or atop just one piece since the biscuits provided are odd-numbered). Then, you proceed to chomp them down like a sandwich. Yummy!

The brown crust and soft gooey middle of the still-warm toasted marshmallows (which sweetness is further enhanced by the chocolate syrup beneath them) represent an epitome of a simple pleasure. In between bites, take generous spoonfuls of mango ice-cream in the shape of a lone Minion for maximum enjoyment. Needless to say, it took us no more than one bite for us to realise that we were in the presence of an absolutely heavenly combination of comfort food!

Granted, this may not exactly be the most innovative dish on the menu but is certainly one of, if not the best. However, I would advise you to share this dessert with your friends as it may be a sugar overload and calorie overkill.

We didn’t get to taste this, unfortunately, but just by the looks of it alone, the fun factor of this beverage warrants a high score for creativity!

A closer look at the latte art on the hot latte

The Be Bad! Café Latte comes in hot (what we were offered) and cold and topped with two versions of latte art on thin, flavourless gelatin strips which are served randomly. Made from boiled fresh milk and espresso, the bitterness of the latte complements, or rather, balances out the sweetness of the s’mores dessert earlier. On top of that, it also refreshes the palate and provides a caffeine jolt to go with your sugar rush from the all the other dishes.

GRU&LUCY “GRUCY” Soda (S$8.90++)

Perfect combination of Gru and Lucy. Frozen fruits in stunning blue soda drink.

Perfect combination of Gru and Lucy. Frozen fruits in stunning blue soda drink.

We are not sure if this drink is meant to be stirred but we did in attempt to evenly distribute the flavour and fizziness. But surely it wouldn’t have caused the soda drink to instantly lose its carbonated sting? The absence of the tingling sensation intensifies the sweetness of this drink so we ended up not enjoying it as much as we hoped to. But if you are not a caffeine person in any way, this would be the most affordable (i.e. cheapest) non-caffeine beverage option on the menu.

That’s all from us. We hope this little review has helped in one way or another!
